My out of left field theory about Kal-El being special...
They might be going with the Byrne version of Krypton, with all babies carried in an artificial womb (birthing matrix as they called it) with Kal-El being the first natural conception, pregnancy, and birth in a few generations.
Y'know I could really get behind this. The Kryptonians being a scientific race don't seem the type to deify or believe prophecies regarding his conception though.

it is an interesting wrinkle to the mythos, and now I'm more curious to learn more.

who here is going to pick up any of the MOS related books or novels BEFORE the film comes out?

I'm very tempted to pick up that official movie novel, which I've done in the past. But then I often find myself in the situation where I enjoyed the novel more than the film......lol

I could get behind Jim's theory as well...Kal-El being the first naturally conceived/naturally born baby on Krypton in generations and he is viewed as some type of anomaly or what have you

No kryptonite, eh?

Interesting.

Virgin birth. Thought everyone wanted to stay away from the Jesus thing?

I am personally fine with Space Jesus, but I remember a lot of backlash after Returns for that, and how many here didn't want that in MoS.

Atrocious Atrocitus does not approve :cmad:

:hehe:

Alright, question time for C. Lee and/or Showtime..

Do screencaps of tablet edition magazine articles count per the rule against posting magazine articles? After they've officially been released, of course.

Yes. You can post a partial screencap and a link to the story. But if the entire story would fit into a screencap, do not post the entire pic.

Also having a natural conception would really justify Lara's maternal love for her son. Willing to do whatever it takes that he lives.

This. Batman Begins' novelization was just brilliant. Denny O'Neill had this sequence from the original script with Bruce tracking down some ancient documents on Rā's al Ghūl to an auction house in NY...he gets his first crack at vigilantism and whatnot, even uses an alligator purse to carry his tools in :hehe:

I was sorely disappointed when that was cut from the final film, so I fully understand what you mean.

Oh, and Spider-Man 3 the novelization was way, WAAAYYY better than the movie :hehe:

No, that's not what I'm saying at all. I think you might have missed the NATURAL conception part....Jor-El and Lara get busy, she gets pregnant and BAM...we have baby Kal-El.

Clarification is a beautiful thing :woot::up:

Thanks, Old Man!

What did he need the documents for?

No, I understand the mechanics. My point is an odd, almost impossible birth, screams virgin birth. It has huge religious overtones.

I think that's an interesting way to go as well, and would definitely be cause for alarm since extra-uteran (conception outside the womb) conception would allow doctors to "engineer" the children and remove any abnormalities or whatnot. Natural conception, to them after a few generations would be almost unheard of, especially in a metropolitan area like Kandor.

Kudos

Definitely!

yeah, and it would further the theme that Kal-El/Clark was raised with LOVE from both sets of parents.

instead of being born in a cold, sterile test-tube baby type deal.

yeah, I know what you mean.

The best movie novel that I read was the one for Ang Lee's Hulk ( I think it was by Peter David ).

that one had the most impact for me.

I was never much of a Hulk fan or all that familiar with the character.

but after I read that novel, I was like.......D****!! :wow:

If the movie is anything like this novel, it's gonna be so powerful. I really felt the inner psyche turmoil within Banner and letting the monster out.

So, I was excited as all heck when I sat down to see the movie, and I was waiting for particular scenes from the novel to play out on screen.

Sadly, they either cut out those scenes entirely or played them out way less effectively than how the book described.

So, at the end of the film, I was like.......wtf??!!

After that, I kind of lost interest in picking up the novels before seeing the movies..........lol

Indeed. In fact, you could say that the ultimate source of Superman's compassion is in his natural birth on an alien world devoid of compassion.

Natural birth also could represent the unpredictability of nature, something the Kryptonian's have been striving to control for generations.

This would actually be a great angle. I am excited at the possibilities whereas I was dreading it before.

yes. it is very interesting.

Jor-El and Lara themselves could also be considered outcasts of sort because they CARE. whereas the rest of Kryptonian society has largely grown sterile, cold, and unfeeling in the strive for perfection.

that would also provide a great contrast/parrallel to what Clark will go through on Earth, where he feels like an outcast and is taught to "hide" his powers from society.

I still want his compassion to be instilled by the Kents. I want his Earthly upbringing to matter in his personality.

Maybe that is why Faora is incapable of emotion? Maybe Faora is a test tube baby. What do you guys think of Zod? Test tube baby or one of the last natural births on Krypton before Kal-El?

You just have to think about how an advanced civilization like the Kryptonians would react to a practice that's been almost completely abandoned for...let's say ten generations or so...Obviously they retain their cultural heritage in their clothing and architecture, but to go back that far in terms of procreation would definitely cause a stir. It would be interesting if there's almost an unspoken "ban" by the Kryptonian High Council against natural conception, and that's the reason Jor-El would be brought before them, to justify his "actions."

The fact that Jor-El is a scientist alone indicates that he would want to explore, in every sense of the term, and in doing so he would bring himself into conflict with the hardline, status-quo-maintaining High Council. First he builds a spacecraft, then he naturally conceives a child with his wife? After making sure they've established a veritable utopia?

I'd color that some cause for alarm :hehe:

Well, I said "ultimate source,"...maybe "symbolic ultimate source" would be a better word choice? :oldrazz: Because I agree, I want the Kents (especially Martha) to instill his "goodness" in him in the way they raise him, I really hope that comes across on screen.

After reading that probably fake trailer description, I was thinking that, too. may explain why Faora is so much stronger than Zod and Superman ( if you are to believe that description ). she's a genetically engineered specimen.

I was also thinking that Faora could possibly be Zod's daughter. Someone awhile back made the point that the actress who plays Faora looks closer in age to Clark. That Zod, Jor-El, and Lara were the "old" generation of Kryptonians while Faora and Kal-El were the "new" generation.

so......maybe Faora is Zod's genetically created daughter who he's bred and trained to be this bad ass warrior.
