Seems bizarre to me to launch a viral on a Friday if there's no pay off until next week.....

Yeah, I can't see them maintaining people's attention with slowly changing static for more than a day. How long did the viral last in December?

Depends on the viral actually, if it's a scavenger hunt type deal (like TDKR) then i would assume it would take place during the weekend for a monday reveal.
