How the heck has Iron Man 3 became the 5th highest grossing film of all time?

Whedon..
that's who I credit anyways.

That and the high profile twist that had everyone talking.
And Marvels genius marketing machine.

Enjoyable film, but not a top 5.

I think if WB and our creative producers do their job, MOS2 can hit top 5.

Still trying to figure it out -

* Avengers boost (let's admit it, Avengers movie was basically Iron Man 2.5)

* RDJ's popularity.

* 3D boost.

* Supported by most Marvel fans.

* No real competition for three weeks.

* Ben Kingsley's Mandarin fooling people to think that this movie has some really great villain played seriously by a great actor. (no pun intended.)

* The movie was partly financed by Chinese producers, so it did well there (They marketed it well.)

To be in the top of that list you'll probably target all kinds of people and every member in the family. A safe, simple and visually pleasing story is the obvious way to go.

cause james cameron is one of the best working
and cause of event marketing.

Well, 20 years ago I would have agreed with you on the first point, but I'm not sure about the marketing being it. If I recall correctly, both Titanic and Avatar were predicted to be flops before release. In particular, I remember reading an article about how the marketing for Avatar left most people cold with its unfinished effects and all that and that things only turned around with last minute word of mouth from either advance screenings or the opening weekend, I can't remember which.

yea that's pretty much the rhetoric for the top 10.
People love to harp on the quality of the fims themselves when really that list is exactly what it needs to be. The films most people want to watch and mostly enjoyed.

in the perfect world ID4 would be up there.

Its simple really
Most people who saw IM3 liked it went back and brought their friends or at least, told their friends how much they liked it. .

I have no doubt that WB are looking at the avengers boost Ironman got and that sadly will make them more gungho on JL before solo movies. They are just too afraid to relase solo movies without a JL boost thanks to Greenlantern

And strong Box Office for MOS will make them even more interested in JL movies

Could turn out to be a good thing.

Keep in mind that WB was not going to make MOS either, they started thinking of making another Superman movie only after the court ruling.

When I say marketing I don't mean how much money and the style of fox's ads.

I'm talking specifically abut the selling point of Avatar being: come see JC(a recluse coming out of self exile) put on a show like you have never seen. With new tech that will change the world and with cool new sci fi ideas you haven't seen.
In hindsight there are films today with better tech than Avatar(imo) but they sold an industry changing event with that show and people bit. People went in there thinking they were going to be watching some miracle.

It helps when you have a trailer listing every single one of the directors films...that doesn't happen often.

As for the man's talent. I never knew this was disputed. The guy's great.

Oh I know it could. But quite frankly they lucked out with MOS-thanks to Goyer having the right idea at the right time.No gurantee the same will happen again especially with something as monumental as JL.

Howver my main problem with a JL before solos is the possible negative effects it cld have on solo spinoffs-Even if Successful

Does anyone else love Zod screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" in one of the tv spots.

to be honest Avatar did change the industry...a lot of what it did was the behind the scenes type stuff...the biggest being the whole 3D thing...love it or hate it almost every big summer movie is 3D now because of Avatar....

....and to bring this thread back to Superman....it seems like there is another tv spot every time i turn around.

New haircut for Shannon :

or it could have the same effect Avengers had. WB doesnt have to do this just like Marvel and could use JL to build up momentum for solo projects. Look at the boost The Hulk got from Avengers...now imagine a JL movie comes out and Wonder Woman steals the show...like the Hulk did...WW now has momentum going into her solo film.

I get that there is a marketing window and you wanna cast out a big fishing net with a focused amount of money spent, but a tv spot a week starting from 8 weeks out would have been pretty gnarly(for this place anyways).

That beign said I haven't really been watching them.

Looks like Zack Snyder will be doing some media interviews in Toronto, Canada; starting tomorrow.

Gonna see Fast & Furious 6 today. (Happy Memorial Day btw) I'm hoping to see an MOS trailer on the big screen one more time!

I agree. When someone is successful, you see a lot of people trying to not give credits where it's due... Cameron has the magic.. he knows the human psychii... he can tell a simple story in a simple way, yet have great impact on the general audience... Titanic was done to death, until he retold it as a love story of all time... He also brings out the best in the actors.. (see arnold in t2, leo in titanic, etc)...

And he takes the time to get every detail right.. it's the small things that makes a movie belieable or not.....

A lot of people says his scripts are too simple, well,.. i say, simple is hard to do... complicated is easy... sometimes the simplest things are hardest...

I think Shannon's going to deliver the best villain portrayal in a comic book film since Heath Ledger. Just seeing the snippets of his Zod in the tv spots and trailers has me convinced of this. And I didn't notice until the "Fate of the World" trailer that Zod had gray in his hair. That's a nice touch.

Yeah I agree, he looks so menacing, think he's gonna probably steal the movie
