Nowadays, with cheaper CGIs, a lot of directors can do great 'action' movies, but very few can tell a good story within a great action movie. Some directors can do great movies (great dialoque and character building), but not action, some can do Action only without the great story behind, but not both...

The only people I know of who can pull off all of the following that makes a great movie:

1. Character development (Without this, you don't care about the character so no matter what action you put into it, it's pointless)

2. A great story overall, and a romance / love story build into it (with this, it will appeal to both gender)

3. Great dialogue

4. Damn good action build into it all.

5. Not too many plot-holes / logic problems. (For example, in LOTR, why not just use the eagles and fly Frodo all the way to the mountains, throw the ring in, and game over???, or if you read the books, Gandalf was described as a powerful wizard that can level mountains, but when it comes to battles, he fights with his staff...)

Welcome to 20 years ago. Or for Spielberg, 10. :cwink:

Not sure on the face thing, though superimposed shots usually look even worse imo. I think the biggest throw off is the suit texture and hair. An unnatural sheen. Just hard to get.

Very true.
I like how that rescue is shot though.

Watching Sportcenter. Seems the Dodgers game had MoS backstop ads.

Like I said earlier, Snyder has his vision and he films it. If the tech can't catch up, oh well. The idea behind the shot, and the camera work is sweet.

I like Family Guy as well but you can find little plot things like that in every film. That's just nit picking.

I am just using those as examples.. i said 'not too many'.. .in LOTR Movies, it was ok.. i can forgive the eagle thing..

but I can't stand the books.... not when the author keep praising gandalf all the time and builds him up to be like a demi god... and then not use any of his powers in battles is just too much for me...

Well, I like how in Pacific Rim, it looks like del-Torro is trying to disguise the CG with rain effects and what not. I'm hoping for MOS they can use a "soft focus" filter on some moments to disguise blantantly unreal human skin.

There is still enough time :P

I thought that Avatar was the meaning of mediocre. It's a completely soulless film made by a once great director.

Good story telling doesn't have to be original...

Also, I think a great director brings out the best in the actors too...
Yeah, which is why the fact that I was cheering for Quaritch at the end of the film to kill everyone is not a good thing. I am not even a Michelle Rodriguez fan, but she is the only "good guy" worth cheering for.

You can find plot holes in Cameron and Spielberg's movies...

:hehe:

No one is perfect, but they do action scenes better than Nolan for sure. ;)

I remember watching blade 2, and being in utter bliss half way through the ninja fight(oh nolan) anyways, everything was going perfect till the very end, when they turned into cgi doubles. To this day I believe that fight could have ended at the half way mark and still been a bigger crowd pleaser had the cgi and direction of of said technique not fallen so gotdam short. This same exact thing happened in both matrix sequels(you all know the parts).

A man with no mask with a cape is the most difficult doubling to do. We can watch a double of Spidey swing around for 10 straight minutes and not have a negative word to say, same with Ironman, hell boy to some extent, but doubling Superman and Neo(and Blade) needs some serious money and some serious research.

and that's the cue to bring up "the" clip.

MPC and Snyder did some pretty solid work there, it really comes down to the direction.
For the love of god, keep the camera off of their faces.

I think JJ and Bay are the best at solving VFX in uber practical ways. Granted they have ILM on board.
Their approaches to sky diving are utterly respectable, where most directors would just...cheat.

I remember loving AVATAR when i first saw it. But after a repeat viewing and catching it on TV, it really isn't as good as i remembered it. I feel i got too wrapped up in how amazingly cool the visuals were. The story alone isn't that strong.

Anyway
It's an enjoyable film. But overrated ? Of course it is.

I have never seen that. Thanks for it. Though I could probably live without hearing Snyder say "baby "so many times.

And yeah, avoid the face when possible. Though, kinda of hard when you have Supes flying face first into the camera. :D

Sure is pretty though.

Box office sure isn't everything. See Transformers.

Point taken, but even transformers is but a third of Avatar... getting to 3 Billion is something not to be taken lightly... There's got to be magic there to create such long legs... I can tell you I simply loved the movie... all of it.. both visually, and characters / love angle, etc...

Titanic another example.. you can't be a mediocre director and create 2 of the all time best selling movies (and not only all time best selling, but way, way ahead of the rest).

Even a 3 billion dollar box office can't please everyone... ;)
Alice in Wonderland made a billion dollars and as Darth said so did Transformers.

Almost every director does action scenes better than Nolan. And yes I still love Nolan and the Hallway scene in Inception was awesome IMHO.

...Half gainer with a twist...

I actually thought her being knocked back was crazy good wire work. He really "blended" those methods well.
