Okay, so I found the page from the art book that should clear up the confusion.
It seems pretty clear to me: "Jor-El realized the importance of cutting ties [with Kal-El], even though the act required [BLACKOUT]him and his wife Lara to die[/BLACKOUT]."

Sometimes I have a deep contempt for your posts, sometimes you make me so freakin mad I could scream but there is this thing between us that I can't explain...Would anyone miss me if I was banned for the next few months?
I think few pages back when someone posted the Jor-El lives, they were joking around.
He said he doesntdie on krypton. that doesnt mean that maybe he doesnt die on black zero trying to stop zod.
I thought Rises was disappointing but not Iron Man 3, it was a million times better than the last one and I thought it was good.
I didn't care. I understand why some people did but I didn't.The Mandarin was ruined though.
I thought Rises always looked underwhelming. None of the trailers, not even the much touted third and final (Nokia) trailers wowed me. Of course, i was in denial about how absolutely awesome the film would be then that I elected to put my emotions of disappointment deeply in my psych and acted like the footage was good.TDKR and Iron Man 3 have proven that no matter how good a movie can look, the impossible can still happen even if the film looks like it will be 100% perfect.
Heck, Iron Man 3 proved that it is possible to walk in theatres not even knowing who the main villain is.
So guys, what is with Jor-el? Is he alive through out the whole movie?
He's still alive. Only he's very badly burned.
Soon Krypton???Jor-El never dies
Well, there went my 4 star review.
hmm...interesting, does it mean that Jor-El will be the likely casualty of the Civil War? For going against General Zod's wishes? I mean after all, he does say "Jor-El: I won't betray you/Zod: You already have."
Plus he did just say that the S stands for hope...so maybe he was trying to be the symbol of hope to Krypton, what Kal-El is to Earth during the Metropolis Battle?
Jor-El doesn't say this.Superman: I won't betray them.
Zod: You already have.

I think Flaming just took a joke post as a serious reply guys.
Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.

I thought the trailers were great and I was really excited for the film after loving Inception and TDK. Not bad or anything but certainly not a good film in my estimation.I thought Rises always looked underwhelming. The quote (from the 4th trailer) is as follows:
If the Jor-El rumor is true, as long as the story is good, what is the freaking problem? A minority of narrow-minded fans will always cry a river every time there's something they don't like, it happened with TDKR and STID despite both being good films.
And even if Jor-ElAnyway, is not the end of the world if Goyer, Nolan and Snyder changed some aspects of the Superman mythology. In the comics, we have seen changes to the mythos through the decades, is part of keeping things fresh and relevant.is alive for most of the movie, maybe he will die by the end of it.
