All Things Superman: An Open Discussion - - - - - - - - Part 73

This is exactly what I was trying to get at in my previous post. I'm 27I'm still waiting for that experience.

I hope you get it with MOS :cwink: ! The first two Superman movies were the most fun I have ever had at the movies and I have seen a lot of movies over the years! There is just something about the Superman mythos that just makes for the most fantastical entertainment.

MOTP is as close to definitive as they come, a solid origin, good action, a sense of fantasy that manages to AVOID overpowering the crime drama structure. And a fleshed out fantasy and strong female character.

I think that if it were longer and bigger budget it would probably be more captivating than TDK.

Not to turn this into a Batman debate, but there are some interesting points you made there.

I have to counter though with TDK giving the definitive portrayal of the Batman/Joker relationship. It really gets to the heart of what makes their struggle tick, whereas in MOTP that's all just taken for granted. TDK also manages to deliver an arc for Dent/Two-Face, arguably the second most important villain in the Batman mythos. For those reasons I consider TDK a more definitive Batman story. And I mean that in the literal sense of it defining a lot of these core concepts of the mythos, not that it's simply "better".

My sincere apologies for continuing the thread-hijacking. Carry on!

Honestly, this is probably going to sound bizarre to some of you but I'm actually hoping for something in the 8/10 range. Something that is very good bordering on great, leaving some for improvement for the sequel. To me that's part of the excitement of franchise filmmaking. If Snyder comes out the gate with a unanimous 10/10 masterpiece then the bar will be set ridiculously high and the chances of the sequel disappointing will increase massively. Granted, I obviously won't be upset if this movie truly blows me away and I consider it a masterpiece, but I'm not going to go into the movie expecting that because I think it's just unfair to expect that.

And in fact I'm kind of expecting something in that 8/10ish range is simply because it's an origin film and we've seen so many of them now. The movie might have a degree of predictability to it. At the same time, its strength is in being an origin movie too because it will present Superman in a new light and allow some people to fall in love with the character all over again, while others fall in love with him for the first time.

You do have a point. What you just described is pretty much what happened with the TMNT. The first movie (and the first few story arcs it was based on) raised the bar so high that everything that followed felt a but disappointing in comparison.

However, I'm still hoping for a bit more than an 8/10.

I'm expecting nothing more than a well told origin story with spectacular action and a story that makes Kal-El more sympathetic.

Guess a lot of that all depends on one's definition of an 8. To be honest, I've seen IM3 and SITD and those are both like 7s to me if I'm being critical, but 8s in terms of my enjoyment while watching them. I think MOS will most likely beat out those two in terms of sheer enjoyment factor for me and may feel more like a 9 or 10 by comparison.

So basically, I do expect this to be the best movie of the summer regardless of all that mumbo jumbo I just spewed about number scores :woot:.

8/10 is FINE to me. I'm more impressed than others if a storyline is simplistic but well executed.

The test is how the fans react.

well if you liked Batman Begins and TDK, you will like this. This is a story by Nolan. remember that

I'm the same way, if MOS is a proper 8/10, it'd be more like 10/10 to me because superman is my favorite superhero, so it's automatically going to get a bump. Like SR I'd give a proper 5/10, but I bump it up to 6/10 just cause it superman.

Yeah 8/10 is very Good for me. I wouldn't give many films a 10/10. For example for me I'd give BB 9/10, TDK 9.5, TDKR 8, then again ask me on a different day and I'd give TDK a 10. I also look as some series of films as one overall story and rate that, the DK trilogy gets a solid 10/10 for me based on one story. 8/10 would be brilliant and that means to me that the film is entertaining, well told with a few flaws that in the scheme of things doesn't really matter.

Recently I'd rate Iron Man 3 a 6.5 and Star Trek into Darkness a 7.

If I have a wild smile when I leave that will be more than enough and if it holds up on repeats even better. However the big one is if I preorder the bluray :D cause I rarely do that. I'm not expecting near-as-possible perfect film here.

Flaws are acceptable as long as they don't dominate the entertainment factor of the film. I just want to be entertained and see Superman in intense fight scenes and punch bad people. People didn't care about the story of The Avengers (it's also flawed); they raved about it because of the action. If MOS' action could be on the same level with that of TA's or better, I am fine with that.

I am staying away from this thread. I don't want to spoil myself anymore. I am watching MOS on the 12th, the date it opens here in my country. Let's just enjoy the movie.

I might have been a little harsh in my statement there. I like superman 2 also, for nostalgic reasons. It's a part of my childhood. But come_ON! Comparing MOS to Supes-2, saying that it's the best since the 80's half camp film??? Are we serious here? Nostalgic or not. MOS must at least be of the same caliber as Begins. Forget all about Superman 2. This is just ridiculous.

I have to agree... I grew up with the original superman movies, and loved it as a kid... but when i re-watched them today, it's no comparison... the way the make movies, the way scripts are written, the way special effects are done, it's no contest... in fact, it appears boring to me now... in fact, even SR is way better than any of the original superman 1-4... you can't beat the Plane Rescue scene... and I loved the 'Bullet to the eye' scene because that just shows how powerful superman really is...

On a completely separate point, I worry that Snyder is going to reduce Superman's power to the level of 'he can die if you throw a bomb at him'... I mean, he has to run away from bullets... and I am even more afraid that he'll be far weaker than the HULK..

I'm also intrigued by this but I hope things like this are only really glanced over in MoS as they could be great things to delve into in future stories.

the reason he has to run away from bullets is

he doesn't know the limits of his power

I'm not at all worried about Superman's power levels. The filmmakers aren't dumb, they know he has to be really powerful or else he isn't Superman. Making Superman too powerful is the problem more often than de-powering him.

Love Drew's Cavill interview. I love how he can't hide how much he loved the movie. Also love how honest Cavill comes across for his love of the movie he is in. And it comes across just as I imagine and hope the movie will be. A brilliant combination of insane action and scale and heart and emotion. The latter which I'm personally extra weak for. I have no doubt I will tear up a bit while watching this film.

I am so excited right now! It is past midnight and I have been trying to fall asleep for the past hour, but I am glad I didn't as I just won 2 free tickets to see an advanced screening to Man of Steel this Wednesday June 5th! Crazy as I already won advanced screening passes for June 11th.

This was the site I got them from: http://advancescreenings.com/movie/man_of_steel. You have to be quick and sign up for them before all of the passes go. I follow their twitter account so I know exactly when the passes are posted!

Hope I can sleep now! The only thing that would make today better is if the score leaks or if my Man of Steel Hot Topic shirts arrive tomorrow.

I'm not hoping for anything less than a 10/10...(why should i sell any film short?), but I'm expecting (and would be happy) with a 8/10 film.

I SEE SPIDEY, I hope you're right... I got worried after watching or reading an interview with Jack Snyder, where he mentioned that Superman's power will be explicitly explained... he says that for instance if an A-10's shoots a regular person, how far would that person fall back, vs how far would a kryptonian fall back, all follows a scientific formula... and that superman's powers will be well defined...

So, from there, I got worried. What if superman is not even as powerful as aquaman???? or the HULK (I would HATE if superman is weaker than the HULK because then it would mean my childhood friend would have won in our lifelong debate on who's stronger, hulk or superman... superman always had that invulnerability and superior strength over hulk.. but if superman can easily be killed, say by an Earth missile, then it would definitely spoil the whole thing for me...)

Personally I'm really hoping that MOS is atleast a 9/10 for me though an 8.5/10 would be fine I've just waited so long for this and have so much anticipation I feel this is the most excited I've been for a movie since the summer of TDK.

So has anyone read online if we will see other powers from Superman in this movie? They really are promoting the heat vision, super hearing, flight, and strength. However I am concerned about the lack of freeze breath, super breath, and x-ray vision, could it be possible that those powers are not "real" in this world?

Honestly, with all I've heard about the movie, I'm more excited about it. Especially the action!
