All Things Superman: An Open Discussion (Spoilers) - - - - - - - - - - Part 90

After the quality of the TDK, odds were the quality was going to tail off. I wasn't crazy about Iron Man 3 but like it more than Iron Man 2.

I like the diverse reaction were having to MOS. I find it more interesting then when we universally love or hate something.

Except there is a fundamental difference in the timing here. In the scene in MoS, some time has clearly passed.

There is also a difference between Clark and Superman. Superman is the mask. The ideal he shows to the world. His discussion with the General is done in this guise.

True. But with MoS it's unclear how much time. That may sound petty but I could presume that scene was 3 months later, I could also presume it was 12 hours later.

I'm aware Superman is his mask which is why I think the whole scene with the general was unnecessary. It didn't give any indication to how Metropolis was doing, any indication to how Superman is received all it did was allude to that Washington would trust him I believe. Something that I certainly don't care about or even thought about!

I also didn't get any clear sense of time passing. If anything this seemed to be Superman's first warning to the general to leave him alone, which I presume the general tried to do from day 1 so to me if may not have been more than a few days.

In the same time as that scene we could have got another one that revealed much better information that tied in with the events and themes brought out from the rest of the film.

Edgar Wright proved you can adapt anything when he told the entire six volumes of Scott Pilgrim in less then 110 mins.

And as for Batman & Robin. One of the great comedies of all time. :cwink:

Scott Pilgrim is definitely another great one.

I think an Edgar Wright and Zack Snyder directed (and edited) film would be the single most amazing looking film the world has ever witnessed.

How about a Brad Bird and Zack Snyder combo? Who can forget the Iron Giant's "Superman" moment. Van Diesel's best role to date.

Those of you wanting to see Cav-el in more action, the trailer for the Man of Steel superman skin suit for injustice was just released.

Their take on Cavill's mug is interesting...

Personally I find the results satisfying, especially Superman vs. Zod. It is an action scene yes, but I don't think it subistutes for something else. I think it is the perfect representation of the results, especially because he is Superman. What is exactly missing for you in this regard?
Pretty much all of what BlueLantern has already said. It can all be addressed in the sequel, but that's not the point. Films should stand as finite pieces on their own.

Again, it isn't the not developing the themes that really hurts the film for me. It's more the structure (all the jump cuts) of the film. And I really wish we got more between Clark and Lois. The only real development between them is the exchange at the Smallville cemetery. I just don't feel it was enough, as they are the heart of the film.

A scene I would have loved would be after Clark mends her chest, if we got a nice moment between the two of them considering it's their first meeting (not counting him carrying her bags), and Lois seeing him for all he is. It'd have been nice that while Lois is in alot of pain we got her trying to make light of it, and Clark showing lots of care and comfort. Just a really tender moment between them, to really make everyone care. Instead we jump cut around to her deserted out on her own in the ice.

Christopher Reeve's father died. Saw a photo of him as an elderly man. Saw a striking resemblance in the facial structure to Chris Reeve. The son becomes the father. The father becomes the son...

I think a Brad Bird Flash movie would be amazing, and I think his take on Superman would be really good. Bird can handle action, so I'm not sure Snyder would be needed in that case.

But I like the idea of letting Snyder be co-director. Let someone else handle the subtle parts, and let Zack direct the more "epic parts."

The gravity beam scene is awesome, as is the scene in which Kal is sent away, and the moment when Superman flies.

Of all the criticisms, I feel like the Superman/Lois relationship is the most accurate. I feel like they could have extended a scene or two with them together. Like Smallville13 said, they could have further established something as he heals her wound. Or they could have been a nice moment between the two after they land in the cornfield. Instead, they abruptly end that moment by having Martha in danger.

When you realize that Rotten Tomato percentage scores are not xomething that can be given a number by choice, give me a call. How can say something should have a specific RT score, when it is specifically a percentage based on how many critics either liked or didn't like the film?

Question...what does my response to what flamingcoco said have to do with you? See, this is where you being an ass comes in. I'll admit that I, and others sometimes forget how RT scoring works...but my post about "what it should be" had nothing to do with you. And in trying to correct me on this matter, you sound like a child "Nyah, you don't understand how an RT rating works!".And I bet you have a response to this that is just as condescending.

And it isn't flimsy. The beautiful art of ignoring a question and saying you are just here is to discuss is blatant stonewalling. An attempt to dance around the real reason.

It is flimsy. You sound like any other pretentious snob that gets dismissive when someone dosen't like or "get" their film. You want to be dismissive, yet sound objective at the same time.

I never said I was just here to discuss. I'm here to express how I feel about MOS. You are not a psychiatrist. Stop trying to be. It's already been explained that, as fans of Superman PERIOD, fans will want to discuss different versions, whether its talking about how you hate Reeve's disguise, or complaining that Cavill kills. If you can't accept that, that is your problem.

It is amazing how many people can dislike something and then write so much about it. It is the height of fanboy ridiculousness. It is just like Devin.

It is amazing how many people don't understand or comprehend that there is nothing wrong with sharing your dislike or disappointment with something, and that you shouldn't be discouraged from that by some basement dwelling snob. It is the height of fanboy foolishness. It is just like Jett from BOF.

It's hilarious how offended and heated up people are getting over a film.
OVER A FILM. Let alone the personal attacks
But then again it's the Internet when no one's opinions can be respected right ? Some people who visit this thread are obvious trolls and pretentious individuals who don't value anyone's opinion but their own.
I think alot of people who visit this particular section of the thread need to take a week off or longer
Idk about the users that post on here but I'm tired of taking the film apart and analyzing it. I'll be around other parts of hype, around the general movies section but I'm taking a break from Superman. It's not even particularly fun to post here anymore.
It's cool when a film has such a polarizing viewpoint that offers in depth discussion, but with that also comes people not being able to respect each other's opinion.
Adios for awhile.

Yeah. It's a movie that forces a reaction. Though ideally I would want that effect for a sequel ;)

Oh well, MOS2 is probably gonna be the more "universal" movie.

I can understand. It was a lot more fun before MOS came out. We used to argue over trunks and Superman's hairstyle but there was a playfulness to it all.

I was happier before Man of Steel came out. I imagined an almost arty Superman film that packed a wallop in the action department whilst still focusing heavily on its characters' journeys. I don't know why I imagined Terrence Mallick directing this film, probably because of the trailers and their tone. Then I watched it...

TBH, some of the better sequences came from the fans ;)

Despite the somewhat divided reaction, Cavill has managed to go mostly unscathed. I think that speaks positively of him.

Yeah, having a bit more in the cornfield would have been nice.

^ Yes. I feel like Goyer has had the worst of it, followed more or less by Nolan, and Snyder.
Micheal Shannon has been bashed around, which seems odd to me.

I have an unrequited love for Michael Shannon. He comes out unscathed regardless of 'release the World Engine!!!!!'

It was so bad. I kept going over variations of the line and nothing worked. But his scene before he gets launched in the penis-pod was ace. I WILL FIND HIM!

Too be honest the entire casting all around comes out relatively unscathed, which bodes extremely well for the sequel. It's just the scripting that needs work.

In hindsight, the name "World Engine" lends itself to cheese.
"Bring forth the terraforming beam!"
Okay, that's still a little cheesy ;)
