All Things Superman: An Open Discussion

In over 60 years they haven't had a successful change in his costume and I don't see them doing it now...it's won't work. Keep it looking traditionally as it does in the comics but modernize it to an extent to where it doesn't look lame.

??? taking away the underwear, the S curl will make him an aspiration???
weird logic.

04nbod is saying it's the lack of fanbase flexibility that may be keeping the character from evolving with the times.

They've got the scanned EW article on CBM.

I thought it was one of those "click and enlarge"-able kinda pic but it's not.

i got that.

hmmm... u really think the fanbase is so powerful???

superman has worn many many different superman suits in the comic, friend.

but in the end, the traditional suit still prevails.
because the others suck (superman doesn't look super in the other than the superman traditional suit)

Quite possibly. After all, it's the readers who buy the comics and determine whether a title is a flop or success.

I'm saying that even the littlest things come under scrutiny and will cause fan freakouts. We can see it here when discussing these little topics. There is a clear subset who think that if its not broke it shouldn't be fixed but at the same time they won't admit when it is broke. It gets to a point where he's stuck in the past. He's your father's Superman. Its the 30 year old fan who has demanded that Superman fulfil his nostalgic needs. Byrne was nostlagic for the golden age so set metaphorical fire to all the later innovation, Johns is nostalgic for the silver age so he's bringing the best parts back, but the franchise isn't moving.

There wasn't a comic precident for Smallville (and after 10 years we have to say its successful) beyond cheesy and inplausible Superboy comics from the 50's. In the same way I don't think the comics will line the way to a contemporary Superman that teens can watch and aspire to. The film needs to take a risk and set a new marker in the franchise where Reeve is irrelevant. He can't be the man of tomorrow with a foot in the past.

Go to a Cavill fansite. I think Henry-Cavill.co.uk has it. If you are on LJ apply to join ONTD_Cavill, they definitely have it.

Grant Morrison can watch his version of the Man of Steel fly across the screen now with today’s home-video release of the animated “All-Star Superman,” but the acclaimed comics writer is as eager as everyone else to see what producer Christopher Nolan, director Zack Snyder and star Henry Cavill come up with as they try to get a live-action Superman film off the ground.
“I can’t wait to see what they do. There are so many ways to tell Superman stories that might resonate with a modern audience, and I’m looking forward to see how Zack Snyder approaches it. Things I’d personally like to see are a non-camp Luthor, some other villains like Metallo or Brainiac and a more vigorous, go-getting Superman. The noble attempts to portray him as a Christ-like, American redeemer figure in ‘Superman Returns’ had the unfortunate effect of making him a limp and wimpy punch bag. Superman is a highly principled hero, but he’s no pacifist; he’s a brawler who doesn’t give in until he’s dead or the bad guy’s down, and I’d like to see a bit more of that grit. “

Morrison is right on the mark.

Good to see Morrison mind set being exactly where the fans and even GA are at in what they expect to see in a Superman movie this day in age.

 you said it for me :D

I just want to point out it's kind of sad Superman forum members can't manage to have fun with topics outside of the normal same old run of the mill talk, without stirring pots.

Seriously sickened by society to not even be able to discuss Clark's earth parents being black, without it leading to stereotypical jokes instead of how it would work as an actual idea.

Why make them black?

Just a discussion if they did that, if it could work or prove to complicated to pull off.

I liked the idea that his parents could relate to being different as one of a few black families in SV. I also liked the idea that Martha saw no color when she found the baby. She would say "Black, white, or a Russian experiment. He needs us."

Not to say I would choose that as the way to go. Just seeing how the idea could be play out if used.

I'd rather see something like that play out in an Else-Worlds type story in the comics. It'd be interesting. But as far as comic canon and the films go, unnecessary.

True. You could have said that in my thread though instead of the whitey joke

I'm kind of hoping that for this film, that they show Superman/Clark tackling regular criminal activities as well.

I mean as much as I want to see Clark do things that are normally impossible and just unleash his powers against a supervillain, I really want to see Superman stop some of the stuff that you would see happening in our own world, whether it be muggings, bank robberies, gang fights, etc...because imho, if this film really does explore Superman's origins, it would be so great to see the faces on all of those criminals, when none of their weaponry work against him.

I just wouldn't see the point in changing their race. There are many great white actors that could pull off the part so why would it be necessary to change their race. I feel like the only purpose it would serve would to confuse people. I also don't think people would just easily accept it like nothings different. I think most people would just be like "WTF?" and it would take away from the movie.

PS. Haha, I feel like Zack Snyder is the real Zack Snyder and he comes to the Forums to get the fans thoughts on new ideas. He is hiding in plain site and is gathering info on how to make the best possible Superman Movie. When this is all over and the movie is made, Zack Snyder is going to reveal in interviews that he participated in these discussions. I'm calling it right now. haha

Nah, they wouldn't close the real Zack Snyder's threads ;) I'm just into discussing story elements that could separate from other Superman efforts. "Modernization" is kind of the buzz word for the new film, but I think to get there you should look at variation as well.

Just something random I wanted to throw out there...

Steve Buscemi as Parasite voice/pre-transformation.

Why is this forum still called "Untitled Superman film" when the movie clearly has a name? It's Superman: Man of Steel

The Amazing Spider-Man forum changed it's name when the film's title was revealed.

No title has been confirmed yet

yep, yep. ground to the reality too.

I don't want to see another full blown origin story. We got that in Superman The Movie and don't think we need it again. Also there were flashbacks in Superman Returns.

I think most people, even the most casual fans, know enough about where Kal-El came from and how he was raised etcetera.

This time around I want to see a Superman movie from start to finish.

I'd like to see a new spin on the origin so I'm all for it. At first I was against it but the idea has grew on me...

But then again we just had a 10 year long origin story with Smallville....

This may have been asked already, but because of the lawsuit with the descendants of Shuster and Siegel, I thought there was a limit to what could be shown regarding the origin. Aren't certain characters or places not allowed to be seen in the movie? If so, what are they?

I thought that too but I'm unsure
