Perhaps the UN organizers weren’t anticipating this pushback - but I think they missed an opportunity by not having feminist icon Gloria Steinem involved. She’s been a passionate defender of Wonder Woman for decades.

The main problem is that this symbolic “ambassadorship” appears to be one of the few women-centered initiatives by the UN (e.g., they recently selected yet another male to be Secretary General). If postive stuff was happening on that front, I think WW would be getting less grief.
(1) The fact that UN has appointed several "fictional characters" as Honorary Ambassadors, which include characters like Tinker Bell, Winnie the Pooh, and Angry Birds, makes their points worthless.
(2) Wonder Woman is more than qualified (as a character) to get the Honor as the character was created to promote gender equality and present a different approach to "Super-heroism".
(3) The character has existed for 75 years, it's not as if the character was created a few months ago and few people have never heard about it, the longevity and popularity of WW shows that many people recognize her, which gives UN some advantage to promote their cause using WW as an icon. Was there any doubt about this ?
(4) As WW is getting her own solo movie next year, people will know more about the character and what she stands for, if they don't know anything about her till now, in which case criticisms about her become unwarranted in first place.

But, opposing "Honorary Ambassadorship" to a fictional character who is a female, just because "Real Women" are not getting employed at the UN is absurd logic. How on earth is WW preventing more women getting employment at the UN ?
