BvS Amy Adams IS Lois Lane - Part 1

That's actually not true at all.

I think people are really misunderstanding the issue here.

Lois Lane is beautiful. By any normal people standards, she is a beautiful woman. But she exists in a world of Superman and Superman is not just handsome by "normal" standards---Superman is arguably supposed to be the most beautiful man in the world.

The way Lois is depicted in comics changes depending on the artist. Some artists, like Jim Lee and Ed Benes (who drew two of the pictures that are featured here), are notorious for exploiting pretty much every single female they draw. Jim Lee's art is gorgeous but he's never been my favorite artist for women for exactly this reason.

Most famous Superman artists like Dan Jurgens portray her as a beautful women, yes....but beautiful in the way that you might see in real life. Many times, she is drawn as less "obviously" beautiful or glamorous as other women like Lori Lemaris or even Lana Lang. Sometimes this was achieved through her clothing as she was often in very serious "work woman" clothing when the other women were presented with more obvious make-up. In the 1930's, she was supposed to be "sexy" because she was aggressive and strong but was not actually supposed to be supermodel beautiful. Joanne Carter herself was a really lovely woman but was lovely in a "real" way which did influence the character going forward.

When you compare the way she's often portrayed to say, Wonder Woman, the difference is clear.

Wonder Woman is supposed to be a nearly perfect physical specimen. (Using the narrow way in which Western culture defines beauty of course.) She is supposed to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Tall. Perfect huge breasts. Perfect long legs. Perfect long hair all the time. Perfect face. Perfect. She was created as literally the female version of Superman which is why they look like brother and sister. Wonder Woman was not created to be Superman's PARTNER. No. She was created to literally share the same role as Superman as a woman. That's why they look so much alike---it was a purposeful design. (Also why any romantic relationship between them, to me, always reads to incestuous. Bc that was the point.)

Lois' appearance has changed over the years and she has always been attractive. But you'll notice slight differences in the way she's drawn when you compare her to Wonder Woman. For example, if you read the famous "Day in the Life of Wonder Woman" issue by Phil Jiminez/Joe Kelly that features Lois and Diana...you'll see that Diana is drawn as slightly more striking, taller and with a larger chest than Lois. She's drawn as more idealized while Lois is drawn as more "normal" attractive.

The beauty dynamic with Superman and Lois Lane is reversed. You are used to seeing show after show and movie after movie where the woman is revered for her beauty. The Superman mythos is a twist on this because, for once, it's the MAN in question who is the "great beauty" and the woman who truly is valued more for her personality than for her great beauty. We aren't used to seeing this but this is one of the reasons why the Superman/Lois relationship is a reverse from the usual gender dynamics.

Consequently, many of the women who have played Lois Lane have been really beautiful. Who is the "most" beautiful is going to vary depending on what your personal tastes are but they are all beautiful. But they are all, imo, beautiful in an attainable way. As a woman, I can look at Teri Hatcher or Erica Durance or Amy Adams or Noel Neill as a young woman etc. and think, "I could be that person. I could be Lois Lane." And that's the point. Lois is an extraordinary, incredible idea about a "real" woman come to life. Idealized? Sure. But real.

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster weren't in love with a movie star or a supermodel. They longed for a real woman that they KNEW. Subsequently, Clark Kent isn't supposed to lust over the supermodel or the most beautiful woman in the world. He's supposed to be in love with the woman who sits one desk over---beautiful but real. (I would suggest reading the amazing biolgraphy "Superboys" by Brad Ricca if you want more info. on this. Fascinating.)

Lois Lane is beautiful. She's sexy. She'e extremely attractive. But she's supposed to be the kind of beautiful that you might actually find in a normal office or on a city street. Striking? Yes. Beautiful? Yes. But not so completely unattainable that you can't imagine that you are her. Bc she's the extraordinary "mortal" who captures the heart of the most powerful and beautiful man in the world. She's a rare female character who isn't defined by her physical appearance and shouldn't be because it truly defeats the purpose of the character and why Clark loves her above all.

I agree it depends on the iteration. In both Lois and Clark and Smallville, Lois is better looking than Clark, not as much in the Donnerverse or in MoS. I also think Kate Bosworth was better looking than Routh, but I admit that I'm probably biased, I feel a sense of distaste when I think of Routh. In the animated series and recent DCAU features they both look like Greek gods except for the lack of curly hair.

Teri Hatcher was the most downloaded woman on the internet for six months and Erica Durance posed for maxim, I'm not sure to what extent the typical woman can look at them and think "I could be her". They're closer to Angelina Jolie than to Jennifer Aniston.

I don't think your WW example matters that much, it's from a WW comic, naturally WW will be the best looking character.

Thanks for the book recommendation though.

Anyway, this is off-topic, somewhat. Amy Adams looks great, I merely meant to say a few posts back that the desaturated colour-palette undermines her appearance since it makes her look very pale, to which someone irrelevantly responded that it doesn't matter since Lois Lane isn't supposed to be a supermodel. Now that I think about it, the desaturated appearance might actually improve Cavill's appearance, so there's that.

Wow you think Erica was better looking than Tom in Smallville? Are there others who share this view as well? I never really thought about it that way, I just thought about Lana(Kristen) being prettier than Lois (Erica).
In STAS I think Lois and Clark were very well balanced on the good looking scale. He would be about an 11 she a 9.5.
In regards to Teri Hatcher I thought she was the best to combine beauty and normalcy, but I never thought she was better looking than Dean. But I was a preteen when that show was on and I was floored by his muscles when his shirt occasionally came off.
CR was definitely better looking than Margot
Henry is better looking as well
Brandon and Kate both were dissapointments in the looks category; even though Kate is some people cup of tea outside the film. Poor Brandon just didn't have that BAM IM SUPERMAN quality that the other actors did.

There was something wrong with the color in MOS that I can't describe, it was like it was washed out. Yet despite that Henry still looked good. I wonder if better color would make him look better worse or the same.

Well, it's mostly subjective of course, and there is a difference between what is sexually attractive and what is a good look to star in neutrogena commercials, but ...

Smallville;
I thought Lois was incredibly hot when she showed up, and she actually made Chloe and Lana look bad because she was on a different scale, not just one league removed but several. She was able to pull off that strip club scene in season 5. I recognised Tom Welling was a magnificent specimen of a man at first, in the early seasons, but he was not ageing as well as ED. In later seasons, Erica had no problem putting on funny outfits, but he was afraid to put on a supersuit. It was also obvious that they did not get the same camera angles during romantic scenes. It also doesn't help that Erica dressed like she shopped at Nordstrom's, and Tom like he shopped at Wal-Mart, he was always in those monochrome $5 crew-neck tshirts.

I never found Kristen Kreuk attractive at all. However, they both pulled their roles well. Think of KK and ED as being respectively comparable to Justin Bieber and Ryan Gosling, how attractive each of the two is depends somewhat on your age. Lana Lang was supposed to be the high school crush, and the hottest outfit she ever wore was a one-piece bathing suit ... why do you think that might be?

LnC;
OK, I'm biased too. I contributed to Teri Hatcher's record. Though it varies. In season 3, TH lost about 30 lbs and she looked awful (apparently she was down to 102 lbs, gross), I felt sick every time I saw her bare legs, and the creative staff clearly agreed and compensated by having her wear pants and not skirts, which is not what she wears in other seasons. She looked better in season 4. In season 1, she looked like a glamour model. "They're real, and they're spectacular" is possibly the singularly most famous line of television dialogue from the 1990s.

A friend I went to graduate school with also had a crush on Dean Cain growing up. We always made fun of her for it, and the fact her long-term partner is 6 feet tall with very black hair.

MoS;
I'm pretty sure that the desaturated colour makes Henry Cavill look better. Contrary to what the media tells you, not everybody looks better with a tan, I understand this because I'm naturally a little darker, and I wish the skin colour on my face was as light as that under my shirt, which doesn't see the sun as much.

HC had very dark hair and olive-skin, and the desaturated colour-palette works like a reverse-tan, making him more northern european looking and less mediterannean-looking, and also increasing the colour contrast between his hair and skin.

Amy Adams, on the other hand, looks better with her natural colours. Since her skin is already northern european in tone, and she has red hair, destaturating the colours takes away from her.

STAS:
Hard to tell :-) But STAS Lois was very coordinated. She wore high heels and a skirt short enough to be a sailor scout yet we'd never know the colour of her underwear, she must have had a perfect walk.

Lmao! Lois' skirt did resemble the ones worn by sailor scouts, too true.
What about the old black and white show? Who did you think was the better looking in those; Lois or Clark? I have never found George Reeves physically appealing so I am going to have to go with Lois.

I've never been through it :-P I also find it hard to judge appearance from a very different era. People don't look the same.

Nobody looks like that anymore. Makeup and dress are different. Hairstyles are different. People are taller today, they have a different average weight, people go to gyms more often now and differently, plastic surgery is more common, girls hit puberty at an earlier age, there are more hormones in food and the water supply, and actually the birth control pill changes how a lot of women look.

Honestly, I find almost nobody from images from the 1960s and earlier to be attractive, it's kind of weird.

Looks like it was deleted. Either because it is simply a rumor or because of the fighting on the last page.

^^
Perry White:
But Lois what will you do after finding this man?

Perry White:
Oh well. Suit yourself. I am taking no part in this.

You'd need a Kryptonite chainsaw to cut through that level of tension.

Watched the entire unscripted interviews. You can tell Henry did his job and went home after that.

Well, he never saw Amy in Smallville, he didn't know what prank she was talking about on Shannon. All we ever hear about is how great chemistry they have. In the movie it's quite nice, but I don't think dude does much socializing beyond that.

Which is a little odd, if true, because he's been seen hanging out with some of the cast and/or crew of U.N.C.L.E. off the set. For what it's worth, he and Crowe seem to have a pretty good personal relationship.

LOL, yeah I was just playing around.

It is odd though, he doesn't seem to talk much in some moments and then it's the opposite in other moments.

Cavill seems to really enjoy drinking/partying. I'm not sure if the rest of the cast would be into that kind of fun.
