The Dark Knight Rises Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle/Catwoman IX

Madonna would never have worked. And I think she would've made a fool of herself by over-acting it. Michael J. Fox would've been strange because he was probably a bigger star than Michael Keaton at the time, so his presence would've over-shadowed Keaton. Robin Williams could've worked, but he could just as easily have put in a horribly over-the-top performance, trying to match Nicholson's Joker.

And DeVito... well, they hit the nail on the head with that suggestion I guess. Though his performance was, and still is, kinda annoying to me and the balloon suit looks ridiculous these days. Though I'll admit he was probably the best fit to play the Penguin in Burton's Batman universe.
Madonna is no Pfeffier. Two sexual beings with very different vibes. One relies on shock value and the other is a classic sensual beauty.

Fox would have given Returns great hype but yeah, Keaton would just fade into the background if paired up with Fox (the writing would probably have been tailored to give Fox a bigger role than necessary too).

DeVito's appearance was fine to me. But then I'm not so much into how the character's costumes and makeup are designed. They could have went with a lot of variation on how the Penguin would have looked. I'm rather interested in the actor's delivery and how the character is handled, if it's a worthy character with themes that your everyman can relate to. So Penguin was a knock out for sure, pretty much from every angle. A man who wish to blend into society but ended up renouncing it all. It's a cruel world, I'm sure everyone can relate to that.

I'm still waiting for the first non-Caucasian Batman villain. Can I hope for a Mike Tyson Killer-Croc?

I always thought that Penguin never really wanted to fit into society, he just wanted to put on that act to impress people , i mean he wanted to find out his parents but i think he ultimatley just wanted to cause havoc in Gotham.

Hathaway overrated ? Please she is so underrated . People are stuck with Princess Diaries and ignore Rachel Got married . She was a victim of typecasting . Hopefully this film will end this .

^Take it down a couple notches. Who said she was overrated. I know I agree with you but could you turn your black down please? Thank you.

Well his conscious mind told him that "yeah, you're gonna be a hero to these people, they'll love you" but deep down he knew he wasn't going anywhere but back to the sewers eventually. He's a metaphor for people's public life and their personal private life, sometimes people don't even know which of those two spheres they'd rather live in.

The havoc of Gotham was mainly due to the obsession that he had with Batman. That's one thing he was sure about, he didn't like a rodent getting all the thunder and being respected by "normal people" for doing outrageous things and all.

That's the other Burton sort of wanted to get across I think: the inescapable consequences of family. Wayne had his parents up until he was 5 or whatever, Penguin was also born into privilege but was tossed out like rotten eggs. What are we really without grown ups telling us who we are, how we're going to fit into society, how would we know that we are "human" if we're never taught to think in such a manner?

That sort of "naturalism" where people inevitably follow destiny without any possibility of escape might be what made BR so hard to swallow for most people, unlike B89 or even the Nolan films.

There is actually a very high probability that Selina Kyle and Miranda Tate will be the next two characters behind Bruce Wayne to have the most screen time. Nolan had auditions for both these roles, suggesting that both characters are major pillars of the story– more so than Bane.

I'm hoping these aren't just casual pics of Anne walking around but are actual pictures of how she will appear in the movie. She looks very beautiful and angelic in this white summer dress with sandals. Somehow though, I'm not sure how this fits with the concept of Selina Kyle as stripper and thief or with the rest of the gritty tone of the Dark Knight. She looks more like she's about to frolic around playfully in a meadow like an innocent girl.

I think these pictures of Anne on set in the white dress are just her in her normal clothes. You can see that she's holding the same book she was holding when she getting out of the car earlier in her street clothes and no make up. Not to mention, it's winter time in Gotham City and she's wearing a white dress and sandals. I'm pretty sure she's not in costume, even though she looks beautiful.

I don't think there was an audition for Tate. I think it was just for Selina/Catwoman.

And yeah I think those pics of Anne in the white dress are just her "casual Anne" clothes and are not for the film.

Guys there is no way she's in costume in those pics because that is a summer outfit and The Dark Knight Rises takes place in winter...hence the snow on the ground we see during some of the filming.

She'd freeze to death if she wore that in winter...lol

You never know. That could be her stripper outfit from which she gets naked in the snow lol.

Can I just say that I am honestly excited about Catwoman's costume? When I saw the teaser picture, I was like "OH YEAH!" Then I got here and saw the complaints. It's kind of hilarious because right before the picture was released, everyone was talking about how cat ears just wouldn't work in the Nolan universe. Well, the tide sure changed after the picture was released.

I don't know what people were expecting, but I think the suit is dead-on for Nolan's world. I see many people stating that it's just a simple black suit that any other movie villainess could be seen wearing. Well what more do you expect from a Catwoman suit other than tight, black leather?! Would it be more distinctive if they made it purple and threw in a green cape? And as for the goggles, I think they're pretty badass. I don't think she'll be wearing them all the time (I imagine that they assist in driving the batpod/cat burglary) because the stunt double was holding that simple black mask we saw earlier. But regardless, the goggles are cool. Not mention, the girl just looks sexy. I love that her hair shows, and it's very reminiscent of Julie Newmar's Catwoman.

And let me also express my shock due to the fact that everyone--I mean many of you-- are worried about Nolan's faithfulness to the character of Catwoman due to the lack of cat ears. Shouldn't you be worried about the character's story and Anne's performance? I imagine that her burglary skills will give her the physicality of a cat (as Nolan said: the catlike qualities will lie in the performance). She will be a professional theif that moves silently, flexibly, and with ease. Not to mention the kind of sexuality she'll bring to the plate. If the rumors of her origin are true, then I am terribly excited to see how her story pans out. A stripper gone professional, high-tech burglar? Sweet. Many have mentioned before that the stripper side of her will also play into her characterization of Catwoman, and I agree. All of these aspects override the importance of cat ears. Cat ears. Cat. Ears.

Also, suddenly everyone is latching onto Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal of Catwoman as the end-all-be-all representaiton of the character on film. First of all, let me say that I am OBSESSED with Michelle's performance. I think it is amazing and it is my favorite performance from the original four movies. I even have the life-size door poster of Michelle's Catwoman. But why is everyone putting down a mere picture of Hathaway's Catwoman for its seeming lack of comic book faithfulness when Michelle's entire character hardly resembles her comic book counterpart? Michelle's Selina was basically a zombie come to life after being pushed out of a window by Christopher Walken. And she was a mousy office worker before becoming Catwoman. And she was hardly a thief at all. I have a feeling that Anne's character will represent all of these essential qualities missing from the Catwoman of Batman Returns. Michelle's performance was glorious and badass, but let me tell you, it wasn't because of her cat ears. When she tears off her mask in the finale, she is still very much the Catwoman of Burton's Batman universe. So let me pose the question: why do we love Michelle's Catwoman despite her character's obvious departure from the comicss? Because her character lived in Burton's universe. In the context of Burton's world, Catwoman was a definitive character and feast for the audience's senses. Michelle delivered a delicious performance.

Well guess where Anne Hathaway's Catwoman exists? In Nolan's universe. In this context, she will fit right in, with or without cat ears.

We are all entitled to our opinions, but I am simply baffled by the huge negative backlash to everything released from TDKR so far. We have no idea what is to come with these characters and this story, and given Nolan's extremely successful track record with the franchise thus far, can we not agree that his newest creation is something to be excited about? Had they released a picture of Anne with cat ears on that batpod, I guarantee you that there would have been a dominant response of "OMG. CAT EARS DO NOT FIT IN NOLAN'S UNIVERSE. SHE LOOKS STUPID." Why bash everything when you can be excited for this final chapter in Nolan's universe? Again, you don't have to like what you see, be sheesh, all we've got are a few pictures and some low-quality videos. Have a little faith.

P.S. I know this will fall on deaf ears and people will continue to pick apart what they feel the need to pick apart, but I just joined the forums, so I wanted to make my personal opinion heard (even if others have already expressed the same views over and over again). I don't expect anything to change at these boards--I just wanted to share my reaction to everything we've seen so far, and boy am I excited.

You're right, in a interview Marion said Nolan told her he had a role for her while he was still writing the script.

And I also doubt the white dress is for the role, I think it's a little too "summery".

Agreed.

I don't see how she's overrated.

She's done good work, that from what I've seen, has gone pretty unnoticed. Well, maybe not entirely since she got the nod for this.

I'm really hoping there's more to what we've seen. It'd be a shame if the look took away from what she brings to the movie.

It's a breath of fresh air to see a well thought out, non hysterically screamed post. Thank you.

I don't know how long you have been lurking around here before you posted this but you sound like a reasonable person and believe me, your words do not fall on deaf ears just mute mouths.

The people who have a problem with this are far more vocal than the people who are fine with it.

As I have said in another post, I am fine with this costume, I would prefer cat ears on a cowl but what I really prefer at the end of the day is her characterization and her story, as well as how it will fit with the rest of the story.

Keep posting amigo, the reasonable people don't post enough on these boards because they for the most part don't feel like repeating themselves over and over again.

Bravo! :woot:

Catwoman without cat ears is not Catwoman. I'm not quite sure how that is defensible in the least.

I'm not surprised that some here are defending the decision though.

Yes it is . She originiated without ears . You may not like the interpretation but there has been presedent for it .

:applaud

The double standard is frustrating to say the least. I guess it exists because this movie is being made right now and Burton's already come and gone, so his movies have the nostalgia factor. Maybe 5-10 years from now people will finally look at these movies on their own terms as they'll have a new director to crucify for not giving Poison Ivy a leotard made out of leaves.

Mark my words, there's going to be a ton of backpedaling when the first trailer comes out, just as surely as there was backpedaling about Heath Ledger's Joker.

Maybe she's only referred to as Selina Kyle in this movie.

If the rumor about Selina being at a masked party are true, isn't it logical to conclude that the mask the stand in is holding and the mask under Selina's goggles are going to be a progression to her final costume in the movie?

So if this is her stuntwoman.....
