Its possible. Shrek 2 was the highest grossing film of 2004.

I've seen the trailers for Shrek and Ratatouille and I have to say that I laughed more at the Shrek trailer. And even with Timberlake in it, I'd rather see it. Shrek usually has humor that's meant for adults and goes over the heads of kids. Pixar usually keeps their movies more kid friendly.

We've had...what...5 Harry Potter movies so far? Only one of them was #1 at the box office. So, I doubt the new one will magically be the biggest film of the year. Transformers has the `80s kids behind it but that doesn't mean anything.

We've had...what...5 Harry Potter movies so far? Only one of them was #1 at the box office. So, I doubt the new one will magically be the biggest film of the year. Transformers has the `80s kids behind it but that doesn't mean anything.

Harry Potter is more popular overseas and usually takes the #1 worldwide box office.

I wouldn't be suprised if Potter comes in #4 or #5 this year domestically. But worldwide probably #1.

From what the Potter fans are saying this is the big one but you're probably right and Transformers i think can create a massive appeal however my point was right now SM3 has had multiple trailers and 7 minutes of footage that included an entire battle sequence,until the others get some promo out there,there isn't much to guess with.

The potc hype reached it peak when the long awaited sequel came out last year. But people aren't that excited about part 3 cause they just watched part 2 ten months ago.

There hasn't been a Spider-man movie in 3 years so the anticipation is much higher.

Everyone who watches Shrek 3 is going to watch Spider-man 3. Not everyone who watches SM3 is going to see Shrek.

True! We get sleeper hits EVERY YEAR. However, it is rare for that movie to be #1. The last time it happened was with the first Rocky back in 1976. Some would even say Star Wars, but I wouldn't call Star Wars in 1977 a sleeper hit. It had kids and geeks hooked from the first trailer.

We're not talking worldwide though. Domestically, only the first Harry Potter was #1. So, I doubt Harry Potter 6 or whatever will magically become the biggest hit of the year. I can see that happening with the last movie but not now.

Agreed. I was expecting Superman Returns to be the biggest hit of 2006 but after it didn't deliver the goods I realized it would flop.

I think Shrek 3's advantage is that its light-hearted PG movie. Spidey 3 and POTC 3 are both dark. Soccer moms hate that! Lets not forget that Batman Returns got its ass wooped by Aladdin and Home Alone 2 cause it was dark. And, remember Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? Soccer moms complained that it was too dark for kids and it hurt the films box office. I wouldn't be surprised if Spider-Man 3 suffered that. Parents may think its to dark for kids.

Shrek has always had the adult humor hidden away amongst the slapstick that appeals to the kids. Shrek seems like the safer movie, the family movie, the date movie. Something pretty appealing for all. With Spidey 3 and Pirates having more "darker" tones, parents may opt for the more "safe" family movie.

I wouldn't necessarily discount Shrek.

I think at least 80% of the movies this Summer will be losing out however. This summer is so tent pole heavy that I think repeat business will suffer. I work 40 hours a week and there's like 10 or so movies I wanna see. At best I think I might be able to see 7 or 8.

There are plenty of non dark movies also if people get sick of Pirates 3 & Spider-Man 3. Theres Fantastic Four 2, Oceans 13, Die Hard & Transformers all simple fun movies to escape the dark ones

It is a possibility, but like I said...the adult/teenage audiences will carry Spider-Man and Pirates even if the children neglect it. Shrek, I think has overstayed his welcome with older audiences. While a lot of teenagers/young adults embraced the original...I noticed a bit of bad response and disappointment to the sequel. If it loses that audience (and with such competition it is likely) that will be a big blow.


Plus, a reasonable amount of children will likely still see Spider-Man and Pirates regardless of it is dark as well. Hell, there were little kids with their parents at the midnight showing of Batman Begins I went to, a lot of parents just don't care enough anymore. Especially soccer moms. They will see it first with no research and THEN ***** about it.
