Doesn't matter, all depends on the quality of the movie.
This. Guardians and Ant-Man prove that if the quality of a film is good. It really doesn't matter what the hero/heroes at the center of it is.

Likewise, this, MoS, the Hulk films, etc prove that if a film is mediocre you're going to get mediocre box office returns.

Again I'd agree with all of that IF it wasn't Zack Snyder once again directing.

I think if it was a new director I and a lot of others would be more hopeful.

Is the marketing team for WB still going to market JL as being from the "visionary mind of Zack Snyder"?

I think the Guardians comparison only proves that people will go see a mediocre film and tout it as great even if the quality isn't truly there by believing hype the media feeds them.

Well it's being directed by Zack Snyder so I don't expect a huge jump in quality.

Maybe a 45% on RT this time?

But that's another story. If JL is bad then the BO return would reflect that. I just think we can't just jump to the conclusion that JL is doomed basing on of BvS negative GA reception. People do want to see these characters, they just want to see them in a movie they can enjoy.

That's the case for most of the break out movies really. You think SW7 is making that kind of money because it's the best movie of all time?

Ah. But Guardians was anything but mediocre. Was it an exceptional feat in cinema? No. But it was fun and a very solid action film/space opera/superhero picture.

Word of mouth doesn't really work that way. I mean there are some movies that are truly bad/mediocre that get word of mouth from being fun.

But Guardians is not one of those.

Typical. The authority on taste has spoken. I guess this film didn't give you the ammo you were hoping for.

Fair enough, but if 'GotG' is mediocre, then 'BvS' is a hate crime.

I love my fare share of Marvel films, but I still don't get the hype for GOTG.

I'm with yah.
With all my being I tried to like that film but it is so overrated (of course I'm speaking imo anyone idiotic enough to think otherwise needs to sit tf down). I think to say quality= financial success is very subjective for many properties.

Sometimes critically favored works are completely ignored by audiences. Think Scott Pilgrim. It's a good barometer but nothing is for certain or written in stone.

I was out with some people a few days back and a friend of mine who doesn't ever see superhero movies and knows I'm a huge fan said, "heard your movie sucks". That sparked a conversation with some people I had just been introduced to who had also seen the movie, and we had about a 5 minute conversation about why the movie was so terrible.
WOM is not good. This is one of the times where I have had enough face-to-face conversations with enough people to accurately say this has gone over like a lead balloon.

My friends are fans of the DC cartoons JLA/GL etc. one of the things that they complained about was how the characters were more like mutants and angry (specifically Aquaman) and that they regretted seeing it and will not be seeing it again

All this talk about Box Office numbers is meaningless. This movie already made all of its money back from product placement deals. :o

[BLACKOUT]Bat in all seriousness the fact that there is a chance the movie featuring the first cinematic encounter between Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman might not domestically out-gross the Deadpool movie is a little disheartening[/BLACKOUT].

Do you yhink me disliking Guardians means I'm defending BvS? On the contrary I haven't even watched it yet to tell you how I feel though now I might wait for home release to distance myself from the venomous hate it's received.

My point still stands regardless of the films quality that box office receipts and RT scores don't always makeor break a film.

"We're not concerned with the drop," said Warners domestic distribution chief Jeff Goldstein. "No matter how you slice it, to get to $52 million on any given weekend is an enormous accomplishment. We’re most focused on where we are in total. And our global number is huge."

It's ok, guys. WB isn't worried at all about the weekend drop. :o

Possibly, but does it really matter? It is disastrous either way.

Exactly. Even if the estimates hold(and they won't) it's still a disaster.

Even Kevin Smith was damning this movie with faint praise.

Global number is huge? Too bad the studio only gets 40% of worldwide sales, at best.

I'm having a hard time seeing this flick break even.

What is WB supposed to say with regards to box office returns? They're not going to publicly downplay the massive drops. Behind closed doors, you bet they're concerned.

They could say nothing. That would actually be the best course of action.

This movie is like the Star Wars Prequels. They will do well at the box ofice becuase of what the movies are. But people may not like them.

What makes it worse is that 2 of the 3 prequels still managed to top their respective box office years and here we have BVS, which quite frankly should have been a no brainer for this year, end up more akin to ASM 2.

:whatever: who are they trying to kid us or themselves, I wonder whose head is going to roll for this. There is no way they can't say this is performing below what they expected, I was dubious about Snyder after MOS but even I thought this would easily lock a billion and more.

I've been reading through this thread and am blown away at how negative everyone has been toward this movie. The movie has been in theaters for only ten days and has already grossed nearly $700,000,000. Sure, it may not be the juggernaut that some people expected, but it's performing wonderfully. As for whether or not WB has already or will earn a profit from this movie considering that it cost $250,000,000 to produce and $150,000,000 to advertise, I'm assuming that they've nearly broken even at this point, because studios get a little more than 50% of the revenue for a movie in its first few weeks based on my research; so, WB probably has received a return of ~$370,000,000. So, apart from another $30,000,000 or so, they're close to making a profit. If anyone believes that WB was banking on the film to make $1 billion in order to make a profit, then they're either naive or ignorant; such a huge company such as WB has top-level financial analysts who would prevent WB from taking such a risk.

I predict that the film will crawl its way to $900,000,000 or more and will be a slight dissapointment but will still turn a profit.
