It's not a dud...yet. Right now, it looks just successful enough to keep the JL/DCEU afloat. Based on the early critical backlash, I thought it might take the WB's DC slate down with it.
Cause that's what WB wanted with their biggest superhero release ever, to keep their heads above water. Especially with the two biggest DC characters fighting each other. They played their trump card, and it didn't work. Let's call a spade a spade. They wanted to blow it out of the water, so anyone saying it's not a financial & critical disappointment is just sugar-coating it. Sorry.

They will make a profit. But it will be a disappointingly small one considering the vast investment in this movie.

I keep reading about it having to make over 900M to be profitable, then some others are saying 700M. Why can't we get a definitive number?

As I've been lead to believe, that's without and with merchandising.

Because studios don't want us to know the definitive number.

A $9.01m weekend for BvS. I don't buy that Saturday number as legit though. Nearly a 70% increase from Friday when all other 3 in the smackdown only ranged between a 40-55% increase on their same respective days(and their legs have all been superior to BvS's up to this point)? I don't see anything that accounts for that. I think that Saturday number will fall below $4m when the actuals come in and the weekend total will end up in the $8m range. I also think Zootopia will swap spots on the chart with BvS once the actuals come out.

Worldwide Boxoffice according to BOM :

Worldwide: $827,311,73

The fact that things like merchandising are being included when talking about it making a profit show the problems this film has experienced. A film should never be reliant on merchandising to when it comes to breaking even, most films don't get that benefit of merchandising, they have to pay for themselves. Merchandising is the cherry on top, that extra bonus that turns movies from profitable to very profitable. You also need to factor in that often the merchandising is done by another part of the company, so while it all still goes to WB it probably won't end up in the books of the division that made the movies.

Which is what they want. It's like the marketing. It costs a LOT of money, but most of that is paid to a sister company that the studios setup so they can write a lot of the marketing costs off the books - the money in effect, is going back to themselves, or at least some of it is. Genius!

Honestly i dont think it gets past Inside Out at the WW BO.

Yes it is. BvS is a dud. It has nothing to do with the rest of DC's movies. Poorly received critically, poorly received by audiences, no legs, barely breaks even at the box office: dud. All that has already passed and won't change. It is what it is. MOS was a profitable yet disappointing movie. Green Lantern was a bomb. BvS is a dud. A dying quail.

Yep. The mental gymnastics some folks are going through to not use the word "failure" must be exhausting.

seeing how BVS need 50 million more dollars to beat deadpool domestically

yeah thats not gonna happen lol

Audiences weren't here for the philosophical deconstruction of Batman and Superman that Snyder gave them.
This isn't a "fun" movie. It has action, sure. It has these popular characters, sure. But aside from the Doomsday fight, there isn't anything about this film that really warrants a rewatch.
A lack of rewatchability is why this film has no damn legs.
If WB wants JL to hit a billion (which if it doesn't, then cancel the DCEU because that's just sad) they need to make a film that's a bit more fun, a bit lighter, and has more sequences that cause audiences to want to see the film again.

This film ending around $870 is ok I guess. But it is a disappointment. WB wanted a $billion. It should have reached that or close.

But they can't exactly spend less on a JL movie either.

I love DC, I grew up with these characters. But WB is honestly in a no-win situation right now.
I can't see how Justice League is suddenly a critic success and a billion dollar grossing film after BvS.

I do think WB by 2020 is in deep trouble given their money spent on their other properties and how their DC slate will fail.

Not to go too off topic, but is BvS really a philosophical deconstruction of Batman and/or Superman

Anyway back to box office: The Box Office is a bummer. But WB has set themselves up for disappointment. They hired a director not known for making really profitable or really well liked movies. JL for sure is gonna cost more, just with the bump in actor's salaries. Then include the action, etc. If JL makes as much as BvS then...
If JL disappoints, both the Aquaman and The Flash movie will be done filming or very far into it setting the DCEU up for more disappointment

Some would say that. Not as much of a deconstruction as Watchmen was but...

But anyway, yes. WB has surely set themselves up for disappointment. The next few years will be interesting. I'm curious to see how Squad and WW perform. That should be telling.
Everyone seemed to call Gadot a standout in BvS - but did audiences love her enough to see her carry her own film? We shall see.

It was up about 75% last weekend so that doesn't sound out of the question to me. If last Sunday's decrease is about the same, it's slated for under 9M. I think JB is on an upward trend and I suspect BvS numbers for Sunday will be a little bit weaker than last week's. So far down 10% from last week on Friday and 5+% from last Saturday.

I believe I said it would limp along to $900m. Still seems plausible to me. Is this now impossible?

Unless any of the actors are supposed to get a % of the net profits, then it will never be profitable, even if it grosses $3 billion:cwink:
