Well it can't be a disappointment in WB's eyes. JL is already shooting and Snyder is still on board. Yet, after Returns which made $267m on a $65m budget compared to the first film with a gross of $411m on a $48m budget they were quick to push Burton off.
Of course it can be disappointment in WB's eyes. Snyder and JL were all set to go before WB even saw the outcome to BvS. Which was really stupid of them. If they had been smart they'd have waited to see how their movie did before moving forward with JL. But they're in such a hurry to catch up to Marvel that they are not looking before they're leaping.
With regards to Tim Burton and Batman Returns, he wasn't removed because of the box office. He was removed because of the parental backlash against Returns. It brought a storm of negative publicity. McDonalds cancelled their Happy Meal tie in promotion. Faith Daniels of NBC did a piece called 'Parents against Batman Returns'; http://www.nbcuniversalarchives.com/nbcuni/clip/5112453298_s01.do
That's why Burton was removed, and the whole franchise did a 180 from dark to campy. Not to mention Burton was not all set to direct another Batman movie mere weeks after Returns was released.
