Black Panther The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 9

I love how people just tear down people for having a not even negative review of a movie

I have watched Stuckman's videos in the past. He knows his stuff. Stop acting like someone has to produce their own masterpiece film to have an opinion guys. Seriously, come on. If we're going to do that, where is YOUR film?

Unlike us on here, Stuckman actually makes money off his opinion.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else but I simply find the guy obnoxious and insufferable. I wouldn't say he knows his stuff; he has a knack for using a lot of words to say very little (or the same thing repeatedly), and consequently I find him to be one of the most vapid YT critics around. Has nothing to do with whether or not he can make a film; I just don't think he has anything of value to say about the medium, whether from a more analytical perspective, or even as a casual audience member. His commentary is indistinguishable from that of random folks chatting about movies during their lunch break. FWIW, I'd put a number of YT critics in the same category (your Screen Junkies, schmoesknow, and other "nerd crew" outfits), Stuckmann just sticks out for being the most annoying among them. Not that I liked the movie at all, but the little stunt he pulled re: BvS (and his reaction in the aftermath) told me everything I need to know about him.

I don't agree, for the most part I think he has a good head on most things. But, that's neither here nor there. My big problem is how high and mighty everyone is with any criticism, down to even a review that is overall positive is being dragged through the mud because people cannot handle contradictory opinions of a film few of us have even seen. It's ridiculous. Critics, love or hate this movie, get paid for their opinion. I am not saying that counts for more than our opinion, but they certainly have a right to voice their opinions without people acting like they killed their friggin dog.

First half is very clunky, picks up much better in the second half. Full review when I get home.

Weird how guys like Stuckmann and JTE and a few others (huge Creed/Rocky 7 fans) have been a bit letdown by the filmmaking on this.

That was my favorite movie that year as well..

Hope that doesn't happen to me. :/

Different kinds of films man.

Creed was a smaller film, with a more grounded, human story.

Black Panther is a huge studio, special effects heavy action adventure blockbuster.

Creed had less things to juggle, less pressure, and Coogler had the most freedom and control to do his thing.

I'm not even a fan of Stuckmann (I find his reviews to be fairly pedestrian) but I fully agree.

I really don't understand why fans, ostensibly grown men and women, do this for basically every single superhero movie. "Oh, so-and-so said things in a movie review that I personally disagree with? How dare they! Clearly they have some ulterior motive!"

I enjoy review embargos lifting and seeing what the general consensus is, but finding reviews that you don't like and trying to discredit them or their opinion is just.... kinda sad. And I'm not necessarily even trying to call out anyone in this thread in particular, because, again, it has happened for basically every single superhero film.

Stuckman reviews suck.

And the ones overreacting (not necessarily anyone here) are just proving his point: criticism of the film, large or small, is being met with an insane amount of counter criticism.

This I completely agree with. I think it's because instead of taking ourselves out of the equation, stepping back, and just enjoying these movies as fans, many of us take ownership of them, and perceive even the most innocuous criticisms as slights. The Winter Soldier boards were especially bad about this (As were Civil War's, for that matter). I remember one user in particular mentioned a mild dissatisfaction with the film's use of Hydra as the big twist, and people at the time just weren't having it. This is while also mentioning that it was a good film otherwise. Sometimes "positivity" can be toxic too.

This seems like its going to be either you're buy into the world building or not type thing

Most are good with the moving parts. A few seem to not dig it.

The one thing I hate about the RT scores Marvel Films are getting now is since all the films lately have been high 80s or better, fewer reviews are rotten, so when a rotten comes, people whine more and grab their pitchforks quicker, and it is garbage. So what if they didn't like it? I am sure there is a popular movie you hated, do you want 100 fans of that attacking you and calling you a moron say if you hated Hunger Games or something?

Fans need to relax and stop being so high and mighty. I know we love these movies and it is great Marvel is putting out products more and more people like. But no movie EVER is loved by everyone.

I remember this. I thought we had an interesting debate on that topic going for a while, and then it spiraled out of control and got personal. Can't we all just get along? :csad:

Exactly. Negative reviews are inevitable, so quit poring through each one to find things you think are suspect.

We're wasting our breathe though. I have a feeling things are only going to get worse once IW rolls around :funny:

That's the thing, it doesn't feel like world building. There just seems to be nothing happening. Shuri is great though.

Everyone else said it's great world building, so can't trust this comment

I can't outright disagree cause I haven't seen the film yet. However, Coogler comes from the indie background.

Day to day Dardenne brothers style story telling infused into his big films. What can feel like nothing is really telling you everything about the people.

That style can be divisive. It took me a couple viewings to get it with Fruitvale Station.

I haven't seen Black Pantherthough. Just assuming that's the case because its not been a problem for most.

I'll go out on a limb and say plenty is happening.

It's just a movie and you haven't even seen it yet. It's okay if someone hates what you like. All of us can't stand something that someone else loves. It's all good. I don't like it when people make assumptions about folks' motives for why they voice a particular opinion. Let the opinion stand or die on its own. I don't know why people have a tendency to assume bad faith.

Edit: I've edited this out so not to deride the thread. I'll take this over into the user review thread.

If the intro to Wakanda is a slow burn I'm fine with that. It needs to be.

Yeah, I really don’t get why some people are getting worked up on a few negative reviews. This movie is getting a ton of praise from most critics so far. It has a freaking 8.3/10 w/98% fresh so far. Like some members on here are saying, no movie is perfect. I do think it’s okay to degree with a critics’ review for a valid reason, but be respectful of it.

I think the point is that there's a right and a wrong way to do slow burn storytelling. Maybe a better way of putting it is that the way in which Coogler did it for BP simply didn't work for jmc and some others.

I have seen the movie, and my only issue is with the action scenes. BP fights way better in Civil War. The final fight between BP and Killmonger had some problems. Only letdown for me really. Still a 9/10 movie for me.
