Black Panther The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 9

I have seen the movie, and my only issue is with the action scenes. BP fights way better in Civil War. The final fight between BP and Killmonger had some problems. Only letdown for me really. Still a 9/10 movie for me.

This is what I said weeks ago. The Russos action, Close combat fighting is top notch, but the clip I seen from BP didn't seem to be.

I haven't seen BP yet, but that overly edited fighting on CW was a big step down from TWS.

Maybe that's why critics are eating it up and it currently has a 8.9 average rating on rotten tomatoes by top critics. By most accounts It seems ryan managed to make a comicbook movie where you walk out not thinking about the big action set-pieces or sequence being the highlights but rather the world, story and characters.

Its almost the same thing that happened with dark knight where you have a movie with imo poor action set-pieces(outside of the opening bank robbery I can't recall any decent action set piece in that movie) as well as a villain much more interesting than the hero. Of course dark knight benefited compared to black panther by being all(?) practical but I can definitely see why black panher is getting the rave reviews despite what some consider poor cgi or action.

If you are able to nail a story that is both relevant to the movie and relate somewhat in the real world, create a fictional place in wakanda that feels lived in and can be even further explored in future with characters who are all well developed and have depth to them on top of an interesting villain. You have all the makings of a hit at least with critics without even needing great action set-pieces.

It's bigger then Thor 3 and Deadpool. Good thing Marvel was smart and marketed BP well and Ryan made a great film.

I'm seeing it tomorrow. When did you see it? I think it's going to go over 150M easily. I thought that would be about the number, but forgot that Monday is a holiday.

It's because it a great film, that's what great films do

When did you see it? Had you when you said it was a great film? Sometimes your posts come across to me as uninformed and I wonder whether you are making statements based on your own experience or what you expect.

BP has a GotG feel to me WRT box office numbers; the predictions keep moving up. President's Day will help, but this is going to be a monster. We'll see how the legs are, but the bigger the opening, the less the multiplier is likely to be.

Some M'Baku love

Michael B. Jordan's Erik Killmonger is EASILY the best Marvel movie villain alongside Loki. HOWEVER...

me before Black Panther: Erik/T'Challa is clearly the new Magneto/Xavier.
me after Black Panther: T'Challa/M'Baku OTP!!!

Did you really forget the amazing middle act Bat-pod chase sequence or Batman infiltrating the building near the end?

Saw the movie last night and really enjoyed it. It definitely has a different feel to the other MCU movies so far and I loved the characters and design of Wakanda.

However, there was one thing that distracted me and took me out of the movie, and that was every time Black Panther was on screen. CGI is noticeably a step down from Civil War with Black Panthers fight scenes looking weightless and bendy. What made the effect worse was the unrealistic camera movements swirling around them during these scenes, they just had no presence to them. They looked like the kind of tacky CGI you'd see in older movies which was really at odds with the tone and look of the rest of the movie (all of the hyper loop fight looked particularly bad).

Even though Black Panther was also CGI in Civil War, there he looked completely real and his fighting and movements looked weighty and realistic for the most part. I didn't even know he was CGI until I watched something about it online. After the movie I rewatched some of Black Panthers scenes in Civil War to be sure, and the difference is quite surprising. It probably doesn't help that I much prefer the Civil War suit either.

Overall (for me) I'd rate it a little lower than I expected due to weak CGI which I think is going to age badly. My top 5:

Winter Soldier
Civil War
The Avengers
Homecoming
Black Panther

I'v just watched that fight clip and... well. I thought JL's CGI was bad but this... THIS is a new level of disastrously bad CGI.

if it's that horrendous black panther vs killmonger fight clip they released on youtube (for some dumb reason; just the look of steppenwolf in the justice league trailer put me off going to see the movie; i can totally imagine someone planning to skip this movie just on how bad that fight clip looked) then a number of people have said it looks nothing like that in the movie. I'm sure we'd hear hordes of complaints if it looked as bad in the actual movie considering that clip looks like a videogame.

really hope these complaints get back to coogler so he can beef up the action and cgi for the sequel which he's hopefully been offered

BP has a reported budget of 200 mil, and Marvel movies have a good track record of great special effects. I wonder if they had ran out of time so the scene was released instead of having additional work to make it more realistic.

I'm having a hard time believing the film has a 200 mill budget if it has shoddy cgi to this extent. If anything it seems like they ran out of money rather than time. The film had has much post production time as any other film, it's really no excuse.

I wish Hollywood would stop trying to cut corners with CGI. The reason films like Jurassic Park and T2 still hold up was that they used CGI for scenes where they absolutely had to, if it could be done practically, it was done practically. I wish they kept this mindset today. They use CGI for everything now even basic fighting sequences. It's ridiculous.

then a number of people have said it looks nothing like that in the movie.
I've heard from someone who watched the movie yesterday (and I know the guy and read his reviews for years), that it is exactly like in this clip.

Not to say the guy wasn't right, he might be but I'm struggling to think it looks like that clip in the movie. There would be way more people talking about it and pin-pointing the scene specifically than just one or two guys if it was that noticeable in the actual movie and I'm not talking about critics but general audiences and it didn't seem to be an issue from any of the reactions I've seen.I say this because I saw a spot where a snippet of that part is shown and it looked much better than the clip they showed.

Besides thor ragnarok had some shoddy cgi in some parts and that didn't seem an issue for most critics or audiences So Can anyone who've seen it here say whether that part was improved from the clip.

(p.s if it was unfinished whoever decided to release that part for promotional needs to be fired because that's some of the worst marketing decisions I've seen. Couldn't they find anything else to show than that.)
