Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Honestly Japan never makes the dent people think it does. For all the money Suicide Squad made overseas, like $400M, Japan was about $15M of that. I'm guessing they will land in the $6M range here

Cool. Someone was saying most CBM films have made over 10M and HQ is weird enough so might have potential there, I am curious just how much less it's gonna make due to the virus, like say, 6M expected now 3M due to the outbreak etc...?

It still has a handful of markets but they’re all small except possibly Japan.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) - Release Info - IMDb

It seems to be doing OK in English-speaking markets like the U.K. and Australia (those two are about a fifth of its total OS box office right now) but outside that it’s a very mixed bag. Of course the big thing is no China release (yet) due to COVID19, but obviously movie delays are the least of problems there.

Ya thing about China is once you delayed it people are gonna catch it online, and they have plenty of time to stay home and browse right now =P

I watched Sonic with my daughter on Sat afternoon, it was fully packed, lots of kids, I'm in NZ, so I'm surprised it's only gonna clear 300M WW, could it be they haven't rolled it out in many other markets yet?

This is what my friend posted on FB

Pretty sad to see how dumb people choose to be when they get addicted to an agenda, those 2 are not even targeting the same demo, and one's a new release the other's in its 2nd weekend, and both actually did well in that long weekend.

and I'm sure there are the exact opposite from the other extreme bashing Sonic, and they think this is what the world is concerned about

All this crap started when BoP fans started giving fake reviews for Sonic a week before the film was even released. As I'm sure you know, a large portion of twitter has devolved into an antagonistic mindset, so of course the outcome was rather predictable. It happened in 2018 as well, when Lady Gaga fans started making stuff up and badmouthing Venom when it became clear the film was more then an empty threat to A Star is Born on opening weekend.

There's a lot of money to be made in Japan for movies that actually resonate over there. It's just that superhero movies aren't really the big performers there. I saw a list from 2018 of the 100 highest grossing movies of all time in Japan, and the only three superhero movies on the list were the three Raimi Spider-Man movies. If BoP were to do well there, it wouldn't be because Japan's big on the genre, but because something about this particular movie resonated with them. I can see how qualities of this movie might resemble things that Japan likes, like how Harley could be seen as similar to yandere, but whether that happens or doesn't, it's not something that can be determined by looking at the comparative performances of other superhero movies in the West

Break even at 250-280M so if they make 200 it doesn’t mean they lose 50-80M, more like 25-50M, can’t lose 80M when the budget is 82M and you’ve already got 170M after 3 weekends with a rough return of 85M

And if original material is male gazing her ass in that pic then there is always pornhub no need to spend 80M for that

Ironically, WB saved some money on Marketing by not getting a China release, usually WB spends some money for advertising in China, more so if actors actually travel to China to promote the movie there.

So, methinks marketing budget for this could be lower than $80 mil.

Whoever was in charge of Marketing this movie for WB needs to go, the marketing was not good, I saw a full page, full color advertisement for Birds of Prey in National Geographic Traveller magazine.

I don't think a wide percentage of the target demographic (teens, young adults and people below 45) read that magazine, money wasted.

Eh. Too early to call. TSS will be released at the tail end of the blockbuster season after Batman, Spider-Man, Jurassic Park, and Mission Impossible. Plus it's a James Gunn movie. The GOTG movies are incredibly popular and that will have an affect with TSS, certainly.

Why did I think TSS was coming out this year...everything is just blurring together

They really should change the name of TSS. It's dumb

How about swapping Matt Reeves' The Batman with The Suicide Squad ? I'm serious, TSS will benefit from a good release date and it needs it, as by tail end of big movie season, blockbuster movie fatigue will set in, which could harm the b.o.

Batman, by virtue of the character's popularity will do well at any month of the year. Besides that, Gunn will be ready with movie before Matt Reeves The Batman as Gunn is nearing the finish line of his TSS shoot while The Batman has just started shooting.

Yeah after BoP title fiasco, we don't need another one next year. People who hated last Suicide Squad movie may just skip the next one after looking at the title of the movie.

Why don't they rename it as Task Force X ?

An argument of the opposite can be made. Staying in the same release date will benefit it more than switching dates with Batman, because it means less competition. I agree there's a logic that blockbuster fatigue could affect the movie, but it will be the same calculated risk between having more competition but more interest or less competition but less interest (?). I'll go with the latter. BoP is a wholly different case, I think.

WB really needs to fix their marketing department. The title is fine as is. BoP did not have any previous movies while TSS will have its predecessor (albeit critically derided).

Task Force X is a bad name too. It's generic as hell and it loses the Suicide Squad branding
Just call it "Suicide Squad: _______"

There is no way around it, this film is a MONUMENTAL FLOP!
Hopefully WB learned their lesson.

I'd say keep TSS in August, that's a really good release date, no competition for a month with kids free from school, just make sure it PG13 for those kids to attend, have your R versions on blu rays.

June's so crowded I remember MOS got A- cinemascore and an awesome 130M+ opening before getting chopped off by Brad Pitt and Monster Uni.

Funny enough their aces in marketing would still be Margot Robbie, with Idris Elba, and play up a bit of Castle and that'd draw some attention to GA too. Gunn will get a following cuz those who were angry at his firing will just show to support him, WB can play with that angle too, if they have the right team on it

This is what I expect they'll do if anything.

But honestly they'll probably just leave it alone snd splash "From the writer and director of Guardians of the Galaxy" all over the marketing.

I wondered about that can they actually use other companies' products to promote their own films? I don't think I've seen WB do that. It'll probably be like that evil superman indie movie last year - "from the visionary director James Gunn" "who was fired by Disney but picked up by us then re-hired by Disney muhahah"

According to this site there have been 124 comicbook movies released and BOP ranks 75th... Yeah that's not good or expected. I think we pretty much hit all the reasons why (R-rating, marketing, bad taste of Suicide Squad, and no prominent male heros or villains). Lesson learned and bow they move on to bigger and better. Good news is now the benchmark has been lowered so really nowhere else to go but up from here.

They will just use "From the visionary director ......." :o
