Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

This movie is limping towards 200mill ww and wont touch 100 mill domestically how is this anything but a box office disaster. Why all this spin? I saw the movie and it was ok just kinda meh, wb can't be happy with these numbers.
Because it's not going to be a catastrophic loss for the studio? It's a flop for sure (it's not going to make the 250m needed to break even) but a disaster? Nah. That's Green Lantern. Not even Justice League with it's inflated budget came close to that

This will be the 1st time in 10 years that a live action dc film wont pass $100 mill domestically.

Ya it’s even worse than that JL disaster where they need 900M to break even and made under 700M or that GL disaster where they need 900M and made 200M, a loss of around 200M, more than twice the budget of BOP which might lose them between nothing to 20-30M.

I am sure WB suits and shareholders are more devastated at not making 100M milestone than losing 200M, especially when Joker just got a billion and they have WW84 and The Batman coming up next. Total disaster, heads will roll like BvS/JL, Hamada is a goner, Yan will be blacklisted and Christina will be fired from Flash, Margot will be sent packing to Marvel, AT&T will sell DC to Disney

I really wish more people had seen this, even on SHH forums, there are many fans who haven't seen this movie for some reason. All these years I have been hearing that "DC movies are too dark, they should have some humor, they need to be better received by Critics"

Well, guess what ? Both Shazam and Birds of Prey had humor and were colorful and light hearted, both movies were received well by Critics and yet both movies under-performed, because fans (and general audience) didn't turn up to support these movies.

The there was some asinine online campaign to paint this movie as Anti-Men, with SJW agenda (it's not anti men), or as Anti- Sonic (which makes no sense as it's target demographic is different, nit's not primarily aimed at kids, it has 'R' rating)

A sub- $100 mil US Box Office is not good but, since Harley Quinn is not a A-list character (Harley started as a side character in Batman The Animated Series in 1992, as Joker's side-kick, recently she's shown as independent anti-hero type character ), Harley Quinn despite appearing in animated movies, animated series and many Arkham games was never as popular as Marvel's Deadpool.

Most general audience know her from David Ayer's Suicide Squad movie, which was divisive and it was released 4 years ago.

We have already discussed the reasons why the movie is not doing well in US, the general consensus is, marketing, R-rating and the ridiculous title. Add to it the silly campaign launched by some people calming its woke or something. They tried this for Captain Marvel too but they failed, since MCU is too powerful brand and since the CM movie was hyped up by Kevin Feige as a must see movie before Avengers Endgame.

From Birds of Prey teaser.

What i dont get is why people pit it against Sonic of all movies...a movie that has a different target audience that has nothing to do with BOP.
Where this comes from i dont know, its not like the marketing or so for both movies even aknowledge each other.

We seem to have reached a weird month with people making weird stuff up.
The quatering for example claimed that SJW whine because of sonics success...which is just weird considering the movie is more pro SJW than BOP is anti men, which he claimed it was.

Just a weird time we live in currently.

Yeah, what's more weird is how some people are actually buying this BS. Just go and watch both movies. (if you can.)

It is really disastrous.

At this point, Gotham City Sirens, an actual Birds of Prey movie or any sort of DC female team up won't happen due to this film.

My friend hates Sjw hates bop and uses sonic to ash bop, then a Sjw blocked me because I was been optimistic about bop and liked joker, so there you go, you have to take extremes to normal these days

I watched böth, took my daughter to sonic, so that's twice the money I paid for that, would have paid more for bop if it's pg13 lol

And I enjoyed both, so...

I agree with your post , although I'd say that within the world of comic-dom Harley is A-list, and has been for a little while. Granted, not A-list to the GA.

What’s even weirder, at least to me, is that Sonic’s box office is hardly something to brag about. It’s bombing overseas and doesn’t look to me like it will go much past 300 WW (unless it does some crazy number in Japan, which I suppose is possible, I have no idea what the character’s popularity is there these days). But even then they’re looking at roughly Shazam! Numbers on about the same budget as Shazam!.

Basically from a box office perspective Sonic looks like it will be a modest success. Which is fine, but a funny thing to get all “in your face hah ha ha we kicked your butt” about.

Even though Harley is not as popular as Deadpool, she's not an obscure character eiher, I expected more than $100 mil in US b.o.

I know many hypesters (SHH posters) haven't seen BoP, I say go and see the movie, Margot has given great perfomance as Harley Quinn and it's fun movie, fans should be supporting this movie instead of running away from it.

I have seen it twice.

I’ll be going this weekend. Only reason I haven’t seen is yet is waiting for my daughter to get home on spring break.

Its the culture tug-of-war being played out in theaters. What I'm seeing is if there is even the hint of an "agenda" with a film, if there's any appearance of a film being "preachy", or having a "message" there's gonna be some backlash and negativity. Joker, Charlie's Angels, Terminator DF, even Ford v Ferrari got some flack. For better or worse, that's where we're at. Now, I honestly didn't get that feeling myself with any of the BOP trailers up until McGregor straight up said this will be a feminist film. I was going to see the movie regardless of that because I'm a DC honk, but others might not see it for that reason.

Now, contrast this with Sonic, which had none of this idea of a "message" or any "agenda" to speak of, and actually had the extra bonus of listening to the fans. This is where the battle lines have been drawn...I think ultimately if you make a good movie and leave any preachiness or messages or agendas out of the marketing, you still might not make a ton, but you'll do much better leaving it out.

There's also something to be said about a film of this type having a certain "must-see" value to it. BOP lacked weight. Right now there's a lot of mindless popcorn entertainment out there, along with some really good material to consume. You have to hit a lot of the right notes, or one really big important note, to get a lot of eyeballs on your property. People aren't just rolling out to the theaters because someone made a comic book movie. I'd wager Bloodshot is going to get a similar box office to BOP because of that same reason, but the only difference is Bloodshot only cost $42M, not $80-100M. It only needs $125-150M to make a profit.

Serious question - how much has the virus affected the movie markets in Japan right now, and in a month time.

Even the Olympic cancellation is on the table (not likely but it's been discussed now)

Would be really interesting to see a different marketing strategy in Japan and see how it turns out

I watched Sonic with my daughter on Sat afternoon, it was fully packed, lots of kids, I'm in NZ, so I'm surprised it's only gonna clear 300M WW, could it be they haven't rolled it out in many other markets yet?

This is what my friend posted on FB

Pretty sad to see how dumb people choose to be when they get addicted to an agenda, those 2 are not even targeting the same demo, and one's a new release the other's in its 2nd weekend, and both actually did well in that long weekend.

and I'm sure there are the exact opposite from the other extreme bashing Sonic, and they think this is what the world is concerned about

China is the second largest movie market in the world and its been completely shut down. It wouldn't surprise me if it took another $50M in China once things are back to normal over there.

Honestly Japan never makes the dent people think it does. For all the money Suicide Squad made overseas, like $400M, Japan was about $15M of that. I'm guessing they will land in the $6M range here

It still has a handful of markets but they’re all small except possibly Japan.

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) - Release Info - IMDb

It seems to be doing OK in English-speaking markets like the U.K. and Australia (those two are about a fifth of its total OS box office right now) but outside that it’s a very mixed bag. Of course the big thing is no China release (yet) due to COVID19, but obviously movie delays are the least of problems there.
