Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

Interesting assessment:

“…it feels in its bones like a PG-13 movie, especially coming off Suicide Squad. It’s not edgy, ultraviolent and genre pushing like Deadpool, Logan, Joker, heck, even Watchmen. And by making this movie R, the studio has potentially sidelined the younger female skewing Harley Quinn fanbase…”
Lol even Deadline is calling them out

The conversations regarding TSS are gonna be interesting

True. What’s baffling is why Margot was given so much leeway in the first place though. I have to imagine at some point someone looked at the dailies and said to themselves ‘she’s gone too far’.

Why not? It's not like WB is in any position to start changing things on the fly again. WB knew what they were getting themselves into. Yan pitched the movie in front of said execs and they greenlit it. Also they had a former WB exec producing the movie so that helped

Well… the movie has gotten some fairly decent reviews. So by that measure, it’s not an obvious dumpster fire that, in retrospect, the studio might have/should have recognized.

maybe not, but I do wonder if somewhere along the line they started seeing thing which gave them second thoughts.

But the film still needs to have an audience to sell to, and that should have been a factor in the direction things went. I’m very much pro creator, so in some respect I’m kinda glad the people behind this were given the creative freedom they were, but I also know not every idea is going to have an audience no matter how well crafted it is. So sometimes the creator does have to be given boundaries.

If this makes $300m WW, it’s made a profit, given it’s required to be budget x 3 times back for turning a profit, is it not, if budget at $84.5m

That’s not how it works though. If a movie makes $300M, the Studio doesn’t get 100% of that.

the R rating had nothin to do with the box office projection ,joker is rated R same as deadpool, and still did crazy numbers....problem is people arent that excited about it, that's simple, can u force people to go see a film ?.definitely not.

i think cathy yan & the cast did great & .i cant even put the blame on WB, as promotion goes.,

The movie is fine, props for them green lighting it, just need to attract more people and raise awareness, hope the legs drag in the weekend and in feb, breaks even or more, and find ways to make a lot more next time

Same, the trailers did nothing for me. My interest has been piqued by the good WOM.

I’m hoping the legs will help this out a bit but that still won’t fully account for its dismal opening weekend. Isn’t the only real competition this movie has next week Sonic The Hedghog?(lol).

Sonic can out-run many things, but I don’t now if he can out-run Harley and her band of misfits at box office race and come in at # 1 in the finish line.

Nobody has said anything about the Joker not being in the movie would hurt the movies box office. Suicide Squad made over 100 million at the box office was because of the Joker not Batman. I am beginning to think it might be a mistake not having Joker in the new Batman movie. I wanted Mad Love Joker vs Harley Quinn. It’s a correctable mistake. Joker is DC’s Iron Man.

I was always going to see it, but the reviews definitely got me more interested not to mention some of the reactions from the people on here.
Yep, same here. The reviews have surprised me. I kind of expected them to be positive overall but with a significant percentage of negative ones, maybe even up to 40% of them, and with a fair number of those saying it was rubbish. Along with some very positive feedback from Hype guys I’m a fair bit more hyped than I already was.

I wonder if this will effect Walter Hamada's job at WB/DC. This is the type of hack flop that gets people fired. I would love to take a peek inside the Suicide Squad set right now - James Gunn must be white as a ghost.

I knew this film was in trouble from the low YouTube trailer view count. And if I was WW84 I would be a bit worried too, they are really focusing too much on the 80's vibe and the film is coming across as a lot less serious that the first one and I can see that causing some damage

Wow this thread has a bunch of overreactions.

Walter Hamada is fine. This movie had a $90M budget. It will make it back. Even if it doesn’t in theatres, it will in ancillary markets. And they’ll make a tonne off of merchandising because it’s Harley.

DC is fine. The Batman is fine. Wonder Woman is fine. The Suicide Squad will be looked at but will ultimately be fine.

Everything is fine. Just don’t expect Birds of Prey 2 unless this legs it a bit. I wouldn’t even count out Gotham City Sirens at this point. WB makes a lot of money from Harley merchandise.

Is Hamada even in charge of marketing?

They had Blair Rich doing great with Joker and didn’t they hire the YouTube guy as well? Not sure who worked on this one?

I just want to know how this film even got past the initial pitch meeting. Not to **** on Margot too much, but she kinda deserves some of the blame for what’s happened here too. This really was a vanity project for her, and she was given extraordinary leeway as to who was brought into help create the movie. It appears at no point did she actually consider who the film was meant to be for, other than maybe herself. If you wanna make movies for yourself, fine, but you can’t expect it to appeal to others in that case. But what’s most obvious in all this is that Harley is just not as popular as WB thought she was. The truth they are learning now is that she’s a supporting character, she works best as either part of team or as a duo or sidekick, and best used in small doses. Any more than that and she starts to become irritating. Best version of her is still the Batman Animated Series IMO.

I dont care about Harley and I agree. Bane, Ivy and King Shark are literally the best things in her cartoon lol. The character is undoubtedly very popular but she's not Deadpool. Deadpool has legit skills and visuals that help sell an action flick, the comedy is a bonus. Harley is a crazy girl with a bat. She's no power fantasy and DC can pretend as they have recently that she's very intelligent and empowered but its all a sham. This is a character who was duped in to existing because of Joker. There's no changing that.
The action can be well shot but no one fantasizes about smashing people with bats while being dressed like she is. That's just the simple truth. Her go to story seems to be moving on from Joker and now they've used that too. That's why it was important for Huntress and Canary to look the part. Would it have killed them to give Canary a leather jacket and some biker gear?
