Birds of Prey BoP Box Office Thread

FvF isn't a fair comparison as while it was expensive, it was an awards contender and quite frankly, James Mangold had already made Fox a lot of money with Logan that they could take a punt on his riskier project.
And, Joker (a DC movie) had just made $1.1 billion for WB, also Aquaman made $1.1 billion last year.

So, if WB loses something like $50 mil. on Birds of Prey they can take that and move ahead.

Surely, WB must have had thought of some kind of worst case scenario for the movie as it was 'R' rated all women team-up comic book movie, I remember before Deadpool's release, even Fox Studios were not that sure whether Deadpool would be successful or not. You can never be too sure with these movies.

Yeah, BoP cost $85 mil (some say $90 mil.) with reshoots but unlike Deadpool, this movie can earn some money by selling Harley Quinn merchandise, in case of Deadpool Fox Studios didn't have merch selling license from Disney, so no Deadpool Movie Action Figures. (DP movie Action figures that can earn some revenue for Fox.)

The movie may still endup losing some money but Studio can afford to take that loss as while financially, it might not have been successful, it was Critically successful and most of the general audience liked it.

Number of DCEU movies that have -

Fresh Tomato = 4 (WW, Aquaman, Shazam, BoP)
RottenTomato = 4 (MoS, BvS, SS, JL)

So, in the end it did help to win back some goodwill and helped change perception, which counts too, as without BoP the Fresh:Rotten ratio would be 3:4.

Yeah at the end of the day at least this movie got really positive reviews despite the disappointing Box Office performance. Between this and WW84 it's looking like it could be another great year critics wise for Warner Bros/DC unless for some reason WW84 ends up being disappointing which I don't see happening considering the reception the first movie got and how awesome that trailer is.

I think Birds of Prey Blurays/DVD's will sell well (despite the fact that nowadays movie streaming service is gaining ground), many women who liked the movie will buy it, as well as fans who want to complete their DCEU collection.

Even Shazam made a small profit. Sometimes, you have to take a risk and trust your creatives and just hope for the best.

Today I saw a number of twitter posts that demanded WB to focus on Batman movies only and close DCEU.

Even if Matt Reeves' delivers amazingly successful Batman movies, audiences will soon get tired of them if WB keeps making only those movies and the franchise will go down.

Besides that, I doubt Matt Reeves wants to continue after completing his Bat-trilogy, and given the pace at which he works, it will take 7 /8 years to complete his trilogy. So, people want to see just one Batman movie every 3 years and nothing else from DC ? lol.

Except for Batman, the next other 5 DC movies are spinoff/sequels to previous DCEU movies. WW84, TSS, BA, Shazam 2 and Flash.

Did it?. The narrative around this movie either within the fandom or at WB (THR said they're throwing a fit and pointing fingers) is that of a failure

Bingo. Getting reactionary and meddling with things behind the scenes because your film didn't get the reaction that you wanted from all sides is why we have Suicide Squad and Justice League in their current forms. The fact that Shazam!, despite not being this billion dollar film, has a sequel on the way and will no doubt cross paths with Black Adam shows that it's not just about the money.

That's a big part of it, but WB trusted Sandberg to make the film the way that he wanted, and in the end, if the sequel and Black Adam are any indication, it paid off.

I would think it'd have to have the Thor - Dark World, TFA - TWS type of doubling it's gross. It's kind of ballsy for WB to be filming Black Adam and Shazam 2 simultaneously considering one has to be strong for the other. If it works out, it gravy. If it doesn't, on to the next IP.

Do the twitterati realise Birds of Prey is Batman related given all but one character is from that franchise? I do think when Wonder Woman 1984 is released, they'll be silent.

Yes, Sonic is doing better than what were initial estimates (it's got A Cinemascore which is great.), Sonic has good RT rating and it's made to appeal to a wider demographic. BoP is not directly competing against it as it is 'R' rated movie aimed at different audience.

Birds of Prey is doing well in International markets, despite the Corona-virus outbreak and fear surrounding it's spread in some Asian territories.
Also, BoP is not released in China (due to epidemic), which also affects it's collections.

I assumed that BoP will do better in US than in International market, but I was wrong.

Really good Friday number. I’ll be interested to see what today brings. Back in 2014 when the calendar fell the same, The Lego Movie jumped 454% on Vday and then 58% Saturday. BoP (+257%) looks more like The Monuments Men (+221% Friday in 2014) so I’d guess something closer to MM’s 19.9% Saturday increase. In any event BoP should easily top $20 million for the 4-day. Might get to 22 if holds are kind.

Also this from Scott re mojo having BoP at 160 WW.
So that would put OS around 70 right now.
