Chapter 36- “ The Butterfly Effect” – Discussion Thread 9/22/08

I understand now how his powers work. He is like Peter, he also has an ability to "randomly re-format his brain" which is how he is able to obtain all those special abilities.
But the reason he cuts opens the brains is for it to serve as a sort of guideline of how to activate that part of the brain. Re-formatting his brain should be independent of having to see how a particular power works. I'd assume he can re-format his brain upon his will without actually looking at another individuals brain, however the chances of getting a particularily desired power would be very slim.

And as Savage said, activating random parts of his brain could be dangerous (never thought of it that way, so thanks Savage :yay: ) and he could activate powers that are extremely undesirable and trigger some mental and physical illnesses as well. So opening someone's brain is the best way to go.

Yes, that is really he only way his power make sense...but as I said he also can activate dormant parts of the brain.

I always though the "head cut open power" was basically telekinisis (sp?) and when he opened Cassandra's brain he did it by brute force via random objects in the room, like a knife or something.

However we DO need to have another Sylar episode that explains a few more things. ANd I have no idea why he isn't after Peter!?
He has been stalking Claire and trying to find her but Peter is the all in one...so what the hell!?
And its not like he doesn't know his powers, he saw him heal, go invisable, emit radiation...so there is obviously something special about Peter and yes it would've been better if he went after Peter and just got his powers...then the tedious obstacle of having to hunt people down wouldn't be so much of a problem.

But, heh, I guess if he did that the show wouldn't be so suspensful...nevermind the logic behind it :hehe:

It's easier to hunt down a helpless person with one power than to confront someone with many ablilities. Plus he might be gunning for Peter next. Getting the regen ablilty mage him better fortified for the confrontation.

^^well of course, now its too late! Peter has a lot more control of his powers...if he went after him earlier (right after they first encountered each other)...Sylar would have a pretty darn good chance.

Its funny how he hasn't showed any interest AT ALL into going after him. He tries to open it up, Peter turns invisable...."fine, I'll screw up your brain by putting glass through it!"....and when Mohinder knocks him out he completely forgets about Peter. Instead he has focused on getting a far inferior power, Claire's regeneration....-sigh-

I'm going to take a guess that Present Peter who traped in the body of that criminal from Level 5 is going to absorb the powers of the villians around him .

I'm assuming he has Jesse's power now that he's in his body, hopefully he'll figure out how to use it before he gets burned alive like that lady at the gas station, man, those villains are cold hearted bastards!

How come none of the villains asked "Jesse" what the hell he was talking about when he said that he was Peter Petrelli?

Probably just assumed he's gone (more) insane.

Or just making excuses to try and escape level 5 from pity.

I'm still wondering what Jesse's power is. I'm thinking it maybe amps up the other powers around him somehow maybe?

Well, if the other villains think it is normal for him to be yelling about being another person... maybe it could have something to do with that.

Outside of Sylar back being Sylar, I thought this pair of episodes was worse than anything we got in Season 2.

What the hell is happening to this show? Granted, I'm going to stick it out to the bitter end, but all of the great twists and revelations of Season 1 have been replaced with groan-worthy twist after eye roll-worthy revelation.

I've never liked Mohinder. And Maya was one of the least popular aspects of Season 2. So here's a novel idea: let's put 'em together!

I love Parkman. But Parkman in Africa? WTF?

Not enough HRG.

Nathan found God? .....Okay.....

I did like Weevil and Veronica having a brief moment. That was cute.

Hiro and Ando having a beef? Terrific. I miss joyful Hiro. This is annoying Hiro.

I liked Claire in these episodes. The discovery of the extent of her powers was a genuinely interesting twist. But why the hell did Claire's mother have to do the pyro thing in front of everyone? It's as if the writers assume we forgot she could do the pyro thing, so they had to remind us. Thanks....but we got it.

Not enough Mr. Muggles.

Nikki's not Nikki nor is she Jessica? Or is she? Intriguing, I guess.

What happened to West? Everybody loved him.

Meh. Here's hoping next week's is an improvement.

I used my DVR to freeze the screen, and it says "Sound Manipulation". Doesn't sound to interesting, unless he can use sound to blow up everything. Which could make sense with what Hiro saw in the future of everything being blown up and away.

Well, it said right there on HRG's computer screen that Jesse's power is Sound Manipulation. So as I said earlier, we could see some exploding heads later this season. Ok, we probably won't see heads explode, but now that they've shown their obvious love for Cronenberg on this show (with the ridiculously blatant The Fly "homage"), I'd say them going in the Scanners direction with that power is a pretty good possibility.

Angela's 'dream sequence' was totally gnarly.

That's no way to get ahead in life, Claire . . .

Not an X-men fan I take it?

At least I hope that's what he can do. It'd be pretty cool if he can actually control the sound in EVERYTHING and get it to pull off that effect.

If it's just Dazzler's stupid light show I'll be pissed.

In talking about Jesse, I'm surprised no one has mentioned Echo DeMille from the webisodes and the GNs. He has the same ability to manipulate sound (they're supposed to be half-brothers). He can make any sound he wants come out of him, like when he made music only his girlfriend would get. He can also create concussive blasts based on soundwaves that are all-encompassing like an explosion, or he can make a focused one that hits someone like a bullet.

..are you serious?

according to spoilers I've read...

Echo and Jesse are supposed to be half brothers, and Jesse's power isn't just a super sonic scream, but he can litterally destroy almost anything with his voice, especially people. Ewww.

Uh, what planet are you on? West was widely panned as the worst addition to the season two cast. He's been dropped from the show. Good.

Even at the lowest levels it still counts as messing with people's perception of their surroundings. Imagine walking in a dark forest and having this guy creating sounds all around you in the darkness - they could be anything from the usual monster in the dark to voices of your loved ones maybe. Even without the extremes of destroying stuff, this'd be a totally amazing power.

Considering I put that on the same list of complaints as "Not enough Mr. Muggles".....
