Location:

Empire State University (ESU) is a fictional university in the Marvel Comics Universe. It is located somewhere in New York City, America. Many Marvel Comics characters, especially those associated with Spider-Man, have either attended or worked at the university.

(It's a Saturday. Very little students, classes are closed, and you might have the stray janitor or kids in the library.)

OPENING COMMENTS: Growing Man vs Speedball

My second match against Trigger this week, and I'm afraid Lady Luck hasn't shone the light just yet. It's really quite unlucky that these two characters should meet, because of their same source in power. It's actually quite ironic. Speedball absorbs kinetic energy to avoid harm and bounce of surfaces. Growing Man absorbs kinetic energy, avoiding harm and becoming larger and stronger in the process. This match is frankly all about endurance, about the limits of each character's power.

Kang, one of the greatest villainous minds made certain the Growing Man was made for a purpose, and he, unlike Speedball, is not human. He does not feel pain, he does not need to breathe etc., and the Growing Man will simply do what he does best, grow.

Heck, the Growing Man faced Thor and the only way Thor could get rid of him is by opening a dimensional doorway and dumping the Growing Man in it. Speedball does not have the abilities Thor has. The two are going to be locked in an enternal stalemate, until eventually, Speedball's powers give out, and they will.

Speedball could've made a difference if he were able to use the preptime to his advantage, but he really can't. He's not dumb, but there's nothing he can do or devise to counteract the Growing Man's powers. All Speedball has as an advantage is the ability to actually learn of the Growing Man, but whether it's actually an advantage in this case, I'm not so sure of. The location won't help either, since it'll just be destroyed.

The Growing Man won't ever let up on Speedball, and although his powers would suggest otherwise, Speedball has been knocked unconscious. The Growing Man simply needs to keep
growing, to keep getting stronger, longer and longer until Speedball simply can't absorb anymore and his powers fizzle out.

It's a waiting game, and the Growing Man has all the time in the world.

WINNER=Growing Man

OPENING COMMENTS: Starfox vs Ultron

Y'know, there was a time that Ultron was one of the premier foes of the Avengers. Now, he's relegated to being beaten by Hank Pym and Spider-Man, while he's disguised as "Santron". Heck, he got beat by Excelsior, hardly a powerhouse team. I love the team, but they're not the A-game.

Starfox is part of the A-game. He's got the skill and the power to take down Ultron. The advantage both have on preptime cancels out, since neither can really take any specific measures against the other, although Starfox, if not simply immune to it, could take precautions to avoid hypnotism.

And it's exactly the hypnotism part that is key here in this battle. Starfox wouldn't be grossly outmatched in a physical fight against Ultron, but the ace up his sleeve revolves around his powers. He's capable of stimulating the pleasure centers in somebody's brain. Ultron might not have a human brain, but he has a computer one, and it has feelings. It has emotions, and it can take joy out of things.

This is where Starfox comes in, manipulating those emotions to his advantage. He can completely and utterly sedate the android into complacency. It's an unconventional strategy, but it's one that by all rights, should work.

Starfox is also one hell of a pimp. He was named after the Greek god of love for cryin' out loud!

WINNER=Starfox

Mercury Vs Deadgirl

Okay, so this is a tough match... but I think that Mercury has a chance here. Okay, so here's the idea...

First off... Mercury would know everything about Deadgirl. Why? Because she was a freakin X-Statix member, and they were huge television celebrities. Do we know anything about Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt? We know everything about Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt... thus, the same holds here. Does Deadgirl know about Mercury? Nope. Now I know what one or two of you are thinking... she can talk to the recently dead. Thus, she can talk to all the students who have died recently to learn everything about her... but no, that's not the case. Reason being... the Childhood's End/Nimrod storyline has been going on for a year, and while we started this tourney, meaning that story doesn't count. That means we're basically taking Mercury from her last appearance in the Hellions mini... and by that time we knew of no close allies or friends who had died. Thus, Deadgirl has no info on Mercury.

Now that being said, I don't think she needs any. She's a liquid metal girl named Mercury. You can get an idea of what she can do.

Okay, so now that that's said, here comes the hard part. Why would Mercury beat Deadgirl? Okay... here I go.

First off... Mercury does not need to maintain her human form and can basically do anything that the Terminator dude can (as stated by the creators). She has been shown in the comics to be severed and she reforms without problem. She can adheave to walls, cielings, hide easily, etc. She can take pretty much any physical beating. The only main weakness that she has is electricity, and Deadgirl has no expertise in that. One could say that they are in a school, and that a means to create electricity could be found... but Deadgirl's never been shown as intelligent beyond that of an average girl. She'd be about as good at finding or conducting electricity as anyone else... which means it won't be found. Not only that, but Mercury also knows that her weakness is Electricity, and being familiar with schools, will know where to find it, how to keep away from it, etc. It'd be hard for Deadgirl to tag her with electricity.

Okay, now that Mercury is covered, let's talk about Deadgirl. The girl is tough as nails. She can talk to the dead and can come back to life once dead. She can lose body parts and can reattach them, or eventually regrow them. She can create claws and can phase her body like that of a ghost. She also has above average strength and agility... though it isn't spidey-like or anything... just above average.

Okay, so it sounds like it'd be hard for Mercury to physically beat Deadgirl too.. right? Wrong! Here's why. Though Deadgirl can come back to life after death... she does have to be dead first... and even if she is dead for a moment... that moment is all that's needed to declare victory. She was incompasitated... she loses. Okay... that said, she can also rejuvinate her body when wounded... thus, can't be physically wounded, right? Wrong! A foot from space hit her in the head and she was killed of a physical wound for a little while... she was out by a physical assault. And in the lamest death and poorest writing possible... yet, still canon and effective in this tournament... Deadgirl met her untimely demise by being hit by conventinal military means (bullets, missiles, etc.). I don't specify that because she was killed off screen if memory serves me, and we don't know specifically what they used, but they were just basic military soliders, so it wasn't anything spectacular. That being said... a physical assault would wound and kill Deadgirl. Now her other powers... talking to the dead, won't do much in this match... moving on. Reanimating recently dead... again, nothing for this match.. moving on. Turning hands to claws... can be used, but won't do squat against Mercury... moving on. And lastly... she can phase like a ghost... something she can finally use... and the thing that will be hardest for Mercury to overcome.

Okay, so now that we see where the characters are powerwise compared to one another... here's how the match will go. Both will be in the school searching one another out. Mercury will probably be telling other students to get out as she finds them to keep them safe. Deadgirl won't be as compassionate, but she's also not one to put innocent people in danger, so she'll let them go. Mercury will probably be a little intimidated by facing a true to life X-Static, that she'll be extra nervous and cautious. She will hide and travel in small hiden forms, such as a small line of metal along the crevis between the floor and wall, or the wall and cieling. She will travel on the bottom of steps, or on the side of elevators, what have you. Plus, it won't be hard to find Deadgirl... as there will be either screams of her appearance... or nerdy fans rushing for her autograph. Needless to say, I think it's safe to assume that Mercury will get the drop on Deadgirl.

I won't go into a long boring battle... so I'll just cut to the chase. In the battle, Mercury will claim victory by initiating a physical assault. Her nerves will be shot by facing a professional, and she will go all out on her foe. She will form her arms and form into knives (as she commonly does) and other such battle arsenal, and she will just tear Deadgirl to pieces. She will launch the attack and take a chunk out of Deadgirl's head, and run down her while jutting razors through her and cutting her to pieces. A quick assault. Mercury will know of Deadgirl's floating, phasing, ghost abilities, and will know that a quick assault is needed, and a quick death. Don't give her the chance to go ghost (to quote danny phantom) Deadgirl can heal from this and can return from the dead... but until she does, she is out... and Mercury is victorious.

Okay, now I know some of you are thinking "that's kinda viscious for Mercury, and out of character, as she's a sweat girl." This is correct, however you have to think of it this way. Deadgirl is a television celebrity. Mercury knows her real well, and simple school library searches during preptime can get Mercury all the info on Deadgirl that she wants. She will know of Deadgirl's abilities, and will assume that she will be able to heal from this and return alive. She knows that her assault is rough, but not lethal, and that all will be well in a matter of minutes, thus, she would have no problem with the assault. And let's not forget, she was trained by Emma Frost. She has it in her. And if this assault does somehow kill Deadgirl... how was Mercury to know it would? She's survived such things before... she wouldn't have known better... not out of character at all.

In the end... Mercury totally wins this match without a problem.

Winner - Mercury

DEADGIRL VS. MERCURY:

So, let's look at each character's abilities. For Dead Girl, it states,

"Dead Girl can command any body part severed from her and rebuild her molecular structure from virtually any physical attack, regardless of how much damage or destruction she sustains, even if reduced to a skeleton. She can safely survive toxic conditions deadly to anyone else. She can also become intangible and walk on air, transform her hands into claws, and otherwise alter her body to an unclear extent. She can communicate telepathically with dead spirits either using their physical remains or on the astral plane and communicate with the cells, bacteria, and disintegrating tissue of corpses, temporarily resurrect the recently deceased as zombies or ghosts, and briefly summon images of deceased people from the minds of others."

For Mercury:

"Mercury's body is composed of non-toxic mercury, which she can reshape or solidify at will, although she is still inexperienced in shape-shifting. Molecular adhesion power gives her the ability to cling to solid surfaces and move her body at will even without overt locomotive features.
Electricity is her main weakness and has often been used against her, because it causes her body to go haywire."

So, as you can see, Dead Girl hardly has a weakness in this match-up. You can cut off one of her limbs, and it won't effect her.

Here is how I see it all going down:

Dead Girl and Mercury face off. As stated in Mercury's bio, she's very inexperienced still at shape-shifting, and readers of New X-Men Academy (after all, New X-Men adventures are not relevant to this match) would realize that she's really not that experienced in combat, either. Her mind would be very taxed with this match. Secondly, Mercury has a simple way to defeat her: Electricity. The grounds of the University is filled with electricity, and Dead Girl would know Mercury's weakness, from the simple fact she can communicate with the dead. She lives in the land of the dead, and there are former X-Men and related foes who would have that information.

I'm not debating for either side, but Wolverine, Domino and X-Force have all showed up with X-Statix. Then there's the character of Washout (Weapon X) that originally debuted in X-Statix. Heck, the whole reason he joins Weapon X is because his powers are so pitiful, as shown in X-Statix. Although they were a little off-beat, there was nothing to specifically suggest that they were not in continuity with the other X-titles.

First off... Mercury does not need to maintain her human form and can basically do anything that the Terminator dude can (as stated by the creators).

To simply point out the flaw in this argument, I quote the source:

"Mercury's body is composed of non-toxic mercury, which she can reshape or solidify at will, although she is still inexperienced in shape-shifting."

Simply put, she ain't all that. She is still inexperienced, and to compare her to the "Terminator dude" is showing you are still clearly trying to make your character more powerful and experienced than she clearly is. This character is a team player who has no experience in "one on one" situations. To steal a popular quote, "I know the 'Terminator dude.' Mercury is no 'Terminator dude.'"

While Dead Girl might not be experienced with electricity, she can speak with the dead...some of who ARE experienced with electricity. And, the fight is at a school which is filled with electricity. How exactly is she going to stay away from it? Even outside, the whole place will be filled with light from the lamps around campus.

Okay, so it sounds like it'd be hard for Mercury to physically beat Deadgirl too.. right? Wrong! Here's why. Though Deadgirl can come back to life after death... she does have to be dead first... and even if she is dead for a moment... that moment is all that's needed to declare victory.

I really don't need to quote much more, because the problem with the whole argument can be found in the first few sentences. Mercury is not one to try and kill someone. She's one of the good guys, and also very young. To kill someone would cause her such mental grief, she'd be unable to handle it.

Winner = Dead Girl
