This is an awesome match between two pretty big bastards IMO.
This is an awesome match between two pretty big bastards IMO.
Prep time wise, I don't think Abyss would have any idea who Scalphunter is since he's from a different dimension. Scalphunter is a Marauder and would have access to all of Sinister's files on mutants, which would be ridiculously extensive. He would definately be able to get info on 616's Abyss, but probably not AoA Abyss. Luckily they both pretty much have the same powers, only the AoA one is evil and will kill. Also, Scalphunter could get inof on Muir Island and know that it is a technological goldmine. From there he would just jump up and down in joy.
As for the battle, Scalphunter wold instantly start assembling a weapon that would affect Abyss' weaknesses, and the Island definately has plenty of tech stuff around. He could easily make a weapon out of the place since it is known for jailing mutants. The weapon could do a number of things such as force Abyss into the other dimension himself (or it could just shoot through him killing him). Abyss is a wise ass and will toy around with Scalphunter giving him plenty of time to grab any tech he needs to complete the weapon.
Also, Scalphunter is a very well trained soldier and warrior. He will definately be able to dodge Abyss' tendrils long enought to get a shot off.
Winner-Scalphunter
Agree on pretty much everything here. Although Scalphunter does also have a healing factor (but I agree that he won't be able to revive himself in time if killed or anything)Abyss (AoA) Vs Scalphunter
This could be an interesting match. Abyss has the edge I think, but the location is more prone to help Scalphunter. Let's review their powers...
Abyss has a void in his chest and he can unfold himself like a piece of paper or tendrels and stretch his tendrils and grab things. He can just pull things into his void with his tendrils, or he can have it more like a vacuum and just suck them in. Once they are in his void he can suck the power from them until they die. And Note: this void is to another demension, removing them from the battle. So even if they are still awake while inside, they are removed from battle and lose. And besides the suckiness that is Abyss' void, he also has limited telepathy. Nothing major, but enough to give him an edge (I'll explain later).
Abyss is also a horseman of apocalypse and is very cruel and heartless. He will kill on a whim and is good at it. He has experience in battle, as all in the Age of Apocalypse do, and he is a cold hearted person, who enjoys torturing others, even children.
Scalphunter has slow aging and can raise himself from the dead (though it takes some time, so neither of these help him here). His main power though is that he can take any tech or metal and construct it into a weapon on a whim, and he can even make a weapon that exploits his foe's weakness. He is a killer as well, though a conscience is inside of him somewhere (I doubt this will play in this match either).
I disagree. I mean the simply fact that he has been beaten (and killed) shows that he has some form of weakness. While it might be difficult for us to judge what his weakness is, this is Scalphunter's special ability, he could find it and exploit it.I'd say that while Scalphunter has an experience advantage, the life that Abyss has been through and all he had to do to become horseman can easily equal that, or surpass it. His powers and form is abnormal and something that is not easily countered, and he has no specific weakness, so Scalphunter won't be able to make something to exploit it.
He would be able to see Sinister's mutant files to see what 616 Abyss is capable of, which is what AoA is capable of (only eviler). I saw you rebutted this later so I'll just say more then. Also, this is the AoA Abyss, so Scalphunter won't know a thing about him, and even the 616 Abyss is little known to most. So Scalphunter won't know a thing about him, or what to expect. Abyss won't know Scalphunter either, but that's not as scary a thing as not know what Abyss is capable of.
But Sinister is one of the most prepared individuals on teh planet when it comes to mutants. There have been plenty of times where he has just showed up to a mutant to take them away. His whole thing is researching the various types of mutants and their powers. IMO he would have a database that would rival the X-Men's when it comes to researching mutants. As far as we know, Sinister, nor the Maurauders have had any dealings with 616 Abyss. He is very insignifigant, and a pale comparison to his AoA counterpart. Abyss lived on Genosha, though he was not a mutate or a mutant harmed by the Genoshans (that we know of) and he hadn't expored the world that we are aware of so that he would meat up with Sinister. They've never crossed paths, and we can't assume that they had off panel for the benefit of this match. So I think it's safe to assume that Scalphunter is going into this match blind.
I agree that he shouldn't have access to the area before hand, and I doubt that he would try and get info on Abyss form Muir's databases. If he got any info form Muir, I think it would be security related, but I don't think he woul ddo that either. I think he would just take everything and make weapons. Now Scalphunter can get info from Muir, but he'd have to figure out the codes and such, and that would take time, and that's not something he has a lot of. He can't search their computers during prep-time (as I think we decided that a person cannot use the location during preptime. We may need to check with Phaed on that though, as I'm hazy on it). And also, as far as I know, Abyss has had nothing to do with Moira McTaggert, or Charles Xavier... so he wouldn't be in the Muir Island files anyhow.
Yeah, the location definately helps him.Though the tech of the facility is Scalphunter's dream, this I give you.
But the fact that he was beaten means he has some weakness. EVERYONE in Marvel has a weakness, even Hulk. Whiel it's true that we personally might not know what it is, Scalphunter's abilities will let him knowit.Thing is, Scalphunter won't know Abyss' weakness, and truth be told, WE don't know if he even has any. He's only been defeated twice (that we've seen) and none was by any sort of major weakness.
Up to the voters?Scalphunter can make some impressive weapons at Muir, but none that will exploit Abyss' weaknesses, as he has none really.
Well, I obviously think he will have info, but even if he doesn't, he will have seen Abyss suck everything into himself. That alone would clue him into his powers somewhat (whether it be sucking him in on himslef or sucking himself into a portal)Scalphunter doesn't know Abyss, so though a weapon that could shunt himself into his own void is a good idea, he wouldn't know to make it, thus, he wouldn't.
I agree that a lot of his weapons wouldn't really harm Abyss. Althogh sinc eBanshee did kill him, a sonic weapon could still hurt himpossibly. Either way, my whoel argument is pretty much based on teh fact that SCalphunter would be able to "see" Abyss' weakness(es) and create somethign to capitalize on that. And any conventional weapon he'd make off the cuff wouldn't be made to shoot through Abyss' odd form, so I doubt that'd work either.
But that's his power. To "see" his opponents weaknesses and be able to exploit them.I'm sure he'd make something that could hurt Abyss, but nothing to exploit him, as he doesn't know what to exploit, thus, can't make a weapon to exploit something.
True, the telepathy thing would be a surprise, but it's not like Abyss would just grab him and throw him in. You even said it yourself that Abyss is a talker. He would most likely grab Scalphunter and start monlogueing about how he's a nihilist and cares about nothing. This would give Scalphunter another chance to actualyl use his weapons, and even if it wasn't the main one that could kill Abyss, he has plenty that would do enough damage to force Abyss to let him go.And even if by some far out chance he can find info on the 616 Abyss, the 616 Abyss has never demonstrated limited telepathy, thus, Scalphunter wouldn't expect it. A slight telepathic stun like I mentioned in my write up will surprise Scalphunter, and then he's fishfood for the tendrils to take and pull him into the void.
I think the amount of knowledge is one of theose things that the voters will have to decide upon., and while Abyss' telepathy is good for him, his talking will allow Scalphunter to escape (if he even gets caught). This I agree with. He's very skilled and experienced and I think he could be very accurate with dodging tendrils, but his lack of knowledge going into the match, and Abyss' limited telepathy will be what takes away this advantage, and gives Abyss the win.

His whole thing is researching the various types of mutants and their powers. IMO he would have a database that would rival the X-Men's when it comes to researching mutants.
That is obviously how I feel, but this is somethign that I think would have to be determined by the individual voters. Agree?

Winner - Scalphunter
I agree. This will probably be my last rebuttal (unless I think of an awesome new tactic that is)Respectable debate, and I think the majority of it needn't be discussed further. Though there are just a few points I'd like to point out.
It may be, but I'll just say that Scalphunter has been with Sinister since WWII so he has been by his side an extremely long time. I personally think that if anyone could gain access to the files it would be Scalphunter, but that is really up to the voters. Also, would any of the Maurauders even have access to Sinister's files? I don't see him just handing out the info. The only other person that I can think of that had any access to them was Threnody, and she turned on him. Is it stretching to even say that Scalphunter can view them?
I see what you're saying now. He could or could not have a major weakness. It has never been said that he does though. I agree that a little sonic gun wouldn't kill him, although sonics might hurt him more than say a regular gun (not enough to just kill in one blast, but enough to have him release his tentacles)I didn't mean that he had NO weaknesses, I mean that there's no specficic thing that hurts him (Kryptonite to Superman, Fire and Sonics to Venom, etc.). He can still be hurt. Here's my thinking on this. In my scenerio, where Scalphunter wouldn't know about Abyss, he wouldn't even know Abyss' weakness until he actually confronted Abyss, and by then it's too late to even build a weapon to exploit it. And though he was killed by Banshee's sonic scream, remember that it took Banshee's full scream and sacrefice to kill Abyss from the inside. Just don't want the voters to think a little Reed Richards sonic gun deal will be enough. It'd take a lot.
I agree, it's up to those amazing, beautiful, fresh smelling voters that will definately not play favoritesBut overall, I think this really comes down to the info and Sinister's files again. Up to the voters.
okay, this is one question I do have about Abyss. The bio says he has some telepathy or empathy, but it doesn't sound certain on which. Has he ever in teh comics used his telepathy or empathy to actually attack someone? (I honestly don't know so if you do, I'll trust that it's true)While it is true that Abyss is a gabber, when it comes down to it, he's ruthless. He'll 'play with his food' for a while, but the telepathic sucker punch so to speak, will be his final play before eating his food. Once he gets Scalphunter stunned, he's going to move in for the kill. He'll know that he has to survive this match, and who better at survivor than a horseman from the Age of Apocalypse. He won't fight a fight with an intent to EVENTUALLY kill his foe. He's fighting to win. He'll play a little at first, but in the end, he'll put Scalphunter down quickly.
Pretty much.Yeah, I think overall it's up to the voters and whether they believe if Scalphunter can get ahold of Sinister's files and whether 616 Abyss would even be in them. Up to them at this point I say.
Strength Level: The Sphinx possessed superhuman strength and could lift (press) about 85 tons. (Note: When the Sphinx possessed the power of the central computer of Xandar, he could increase his strength far over the Class 100 level, enabling him to lift far over 100 tons.)
Known Superhuman Powers: The Sphinx possessed the power of the Ka stone, an ancient jewel of unknown origin, apparently sentient, which enabled its wearer to manipulate vast amounts of mystical energy in various forms. He could project the mystical energy as beams of concussive force, light, or heat. He could channel the stone's energies into his own body, augmenting his physical strength. The Ka stone also enabled the Sphinx to "read" minds and to retain all the information he thereby acquired. Using the Ka stone he could drain vast quantities of energy from other sources into himself, further augmenting his superhuman powers. The Sphinx could also use the Ka stone to enable himself to fly unaided through an atmosphere or through the vacuum of space unharmed. The stone gave him extraordinarily high resistance to physical injury and enabled him to exist indefinitely without oxygen.
The Sphinx could temporarily deplete most of the Ka stone's available energy through use. He restored its power through meditation, usually surrounded by an energy-pyramid, which he generated around himself.
The Ka stone, when whole, granted the Sphinx immortality. Incomplete, it slowly began to disintegrate.
or a time the Sphinx possessed tremendous quantities of energy
Psycho Man versus Sphinx
Well for starters all that the Sphinx knows going in is not all he'll have access to given his powers, he will know all that the Psycho Man knows.
He he can manipulate mystical energies and fire blasts of light and heat. His telepathic powers will give him some resistance to the Psycho Man's technology. His strength and power are higher than Psycho man, so even if he grows, he can over power him still.

Fair enough....I'm going to Borders toorrow anyway, and I'll see if they have teh 4th trade there. If they do I'll just sit in there nice little cafe and read it for free to find out (god my cheap ass loves doing that)Honestly, I'm just going off of the bio myself. I have the first three AoA trades, but I don't have the last one that would have his battle with Banshee. I'll look to see if I can find anything specifically in the first three, but that's all I have to offer. The bio says he had telepathy, but I can't recall it myself, so I just used it as minimal as I could (slight sucker punches are very minor).
I'll get back with you.
Okay, I'll have to go back and read that issue, but since he has never done that since, I would say that it is extremely difficult for him to do that. It most likely requires a HUGE amount of concentration and taxes him greatly, otherwise he would use it more often than once. This concentration is somethign he won't have while Scalphunter is there attacking him.Wow! Okay, maybe he has a bit more than a little telepathy. In issue two of Amazing X-Men from the Age of Apocalypse, Abyss shows Banshee that he has a kid held captive and that he wants Pietro in exchange. When Banshee returns to inform Pietro, people are laying all over the place. Abyss had sent a pshyic tremor and it made all the people fall in extreme pain and they were wriggling about and all that. There's probably a good 20. Another interesting note... Storm hits Abyss with a point blank lightning bolt and it doesn't phase him, though a punch from Quicksilver accross the face does hurt him a small bit.
So there you go, not only does he have telepathy... he can use it lethally! And a lethal telepathic tremor is enough to take Scalphunter down easily.
Winner - Abyss (AoA)
Rebuttal

Also, I looked into his death in Volume 4 of AoA, and it doesn't show much telepathic power. He does say a couple of times that he can "feel their fear" and stuff like that, which is where I think the bio gets the "empathic/telepathic" confusion part. He doesn't do anything else telepathically, but there isn't much of the fight in the story anyway.
Hopefully, I'll be able to read the other volumes this weekend so I can see the power you talk about and comment on it more.
Sphinx is several thousand years old, he's going to have enough experience in combat to know when his head is being messed with. I doubt he could go through all he has without coming up against a telepath or illusionist at least once. Plus, lets not forget that Sphinx can manipulate reality as well, so whatever the Psycho Man distorts, Sphinx will set right (or at least attempt to as the Psycho Man's projections are only illusions and not reality he will be warping reality around him in dangerous ways that are bound to effect Psycho ManI'm taking it you are talking about his ability to read minds. First, he has to find the mind to read. As I pointed out, Psycho Man can sense where a person is. With this, he'll know where to focus the wave of intense emotions to manipulate Sphinx's emotions. He'll be so focused on these effects, he will not be able to do much of anything else. He'll be seeing stuff that isn't there. (And, Psycho Man can even "generate solid energy forms to give substance to his illusions.")
First, there is no indication he'd have resistance to this, especially since he will be unaware of what to expect going in. (In the same way, a character like Batman can handle someone with mind-altering powers if he's aware much, much better than if it catches him by surprise. When a character has their reality and mind altered, it has a humongous impact when they don't realize it's happening to them.) If Sphinx would be aware of who Psycho Man is going into the match, I'd be worried about him doing something to counteract Psycho Man's abilities. But, he won't, and the advantage goes to Psycho Man in this regard.
Bullseye has an uncanny ability to use virtually any object as a lethal projectile. This makes him more dangerous than many characters that do have superhuman powers. While not superhuman, Bullseye can accomplish many feats with thrown projectiles that are impossible outside of fiction. Some of his accomplishments include lacerating a persons throat with a thrown playing card, spitting his own tooth through a human skull, tossing a paper airplane to a distant rooftop, and killing a person with a toothpick thrown through a window from a hundred yards away. While incarcerated, Bullseye was diagnosed with a rare form of red/green color blindness called protanopia.
Bullseye has exceptional physical conditioning, with the agility, reflexes, stamina, and speed of a professional or even an Olympic athlete. One result of his naturally perfect athletic gift for hand-eye coordination is that his reflexes are honed to a level well beyond that of any normal human.
Due to various injuries, many of Bullseye's bones have been reinforced with strips of adamantium, with his spine now entirely composed of adamantium. This has increased his resistance to injury in unarmed combat. This reinforcement also allows Bullseye to utilize acrobatic maneuvers impossible for an ordinary human (as his bones are protected from fracture). Unlike Wolverine whose entire skeleton is laced with adamantium, it was not necessary for Bullseye to have a mutant healing factor. The details of the surgical procedure granting him this adamantium have not been disclosed.
Aside from his ability to throw projectiles with lethal accuracy, Bullseye is also an expert martial artist and is extremely talented in the use of edged weapons and conventional firearms. Often, his outspoken attitude during combat about using his abilities seems to have become one of his favorite weapons: intimidation. As such, he believes that his attention in the media grants him more effectiveness in combat with a near flawless reputation, rather than an assassin who often uses fear of the unknown.
Bullseye has a compulsive need to study his targets' histories, abilities, and relationships before engaging them. As a result, he can anticipate his opponents' every move. This compulsion often crosses from the professional into the personal, such as Bullseye's obsession with Elektra.
