The Dark Knight Rises Depp to play the Riddler and Hoffman to be Penguin?

Theres not even a script yet, and isn't it the director and producers who choses who gets cast? They studios might just be talking to them, but that doesn't mean Nolan would cast them.

I believe both Depp and Hoffman would do fine in those roles...but neither would be my first choice, especially in the Nolan films.

I think Bettany(Riddler) and Hoskins(Penguin) would be much better - and while everyone is saying wait to see if Nolan comes back, let me tell you....with the cash TDK is making, WB will go foward with number 3, even if I direct it.....LOL

I reckon they get there info from this forum (sorry if it's been posted).

All aboard the Batman bandwagon
MYLES WEARRING – FRIDAY, AUGUST 01, 08 (10:57 AM)

FIRST we heard Angelina Jolie was desperate to slip into a black rubber catsuit to play Catwoman on the big screen.

Now there’s reports Hollywood heavyweight Johnny Depp is in negotiations to play The Riddler and Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman is being considered for the role of The Penguin.

It seems all the big name stars are suddenly keen to jump on the Batman bandwagon to play one of the famed comic book villians following the massive success of the latest instalment, The Dark Knight.

They’re no doubt also interested in getting the same kind of critical acclaim late actor Heath Ledger has garnered for his memorable portrayal of The Joker.

“Johnny would be amazing as The Riddler. The studio knew they needed someone who could match or even top the late actor Heath Ledger’s performance,” a studio insider told BANG Showbiz.

The Riddler was last played by Jim Carrey in the long forgotten 1995 film Batman Forever, which also starred an unconvicing Val Kilmer as Batman, Chris O’Donnell as a fairly camp Robin, Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face and Nicole Kidman as the love interest.

Watch Carrey, Kilmer, Kidman and Jones in action.

Danny DeVito was the last actor to play the Penguin in 1992’s Batman Returns, which also featured Michelle Pfeiffer doing a damn fine Catwoman.

See them in action here.

Since then Halle Berry has played Catwoman in a disasterous spin-off in 2004 which bombed at the box office and nearly ended Berry’s career (it certainly never fully recovered).

Watch the trailer if you dare.

So who’s next? We’d like to nominate Tom Hanks to play King Tut, but who should be Killer Croc, Firefly or Clayface? Surely it’s time to resurrect Poison Ivy and Dr Freeze as well, last played by Uma Thurman and The Governator, respectively.

Who would you like to see as a villain in Batman?

All these actors just want to cash in. Unlike Heath, he did it for the love of the character and franchise.

:whatever::whatever:

Are you talking about the same Heath that hated comic book films and never even read comics until he secured the role of the Joker?

What actor wouldn't want the chance to work with Nolan and crew after the success of TDK???? I've read time and time again how much fun it is for actors to play the roles of comic book characters on the big screen.

BTW.....I'm all for Depp getting a role in the next film. Even though this story is bogus.

I heard that Will Smith will be Red Hood in the next movie.

I heard that Will Smith will be Red Hood in the next movie.

I heard he takes the hood off to unveil himself and goes "I make this look goooood"

well in the secret rough draft my friend (who is Bruce Waynes Ab muscle
double got) he says that but it is subject to change

:cwink:

I don't have a problem with either of them for those roles, but I do more prefer Hoffman for the Pengiun, and as a sorta of British Arms dealer or something like they were talking about for the last film...

I was all for Depp as the Joker, so yeah, I have no problem with him being a part of this franchise. I'm just not totally sure about him as a pure Villian, based on his roles for awhile now. What I mean is, at this point in his career, can Johnny Depp make you utterly hate him?... That's a challenge I guess...

But what I really want to see, and I know I never will, and I don't care for what role(Maybe even a newly created original Villian by the Nolan Bros., or maybe MR. FREEZE if they can adapt it to be real and interesting), is Daniel Day Lewis in a Christopher Nolan film, preferably a Batman Nolan film... I know it's not really his bag, blockbusters I mean, and I doubt he buys into the comic book thing... But if they can somehow convince him to come on board, I'll be a very happy camper... Now thats a guy that can really make you despise him.

I doubt there is a whole lot of validity to these rumors, but honestly, Depp, Jolie, and Hoffman would be a terrific cast of villains for a third movie. I wouldn't object one bit.

Man, Johnny Depp's the only actor I could see playing the Joker in the next movie. The Joker is too meaningful to be like ''Forgotten'' or ''hidden'' in the next movie. He's a brilliant actor don't get me wrong! I could see Jack Sparrow when Heath gets out of the hospital, it's kinda similar. I mean Heath was damn amazing and if he was still alive I wouldn't be able to wait for the sequel. Johnny's the only one who could match that...
Screw the Riddler for now or get someone else.

the joker doesnt need to be forgotten, but they dont need to give him any dialog either. Just a scene where he breaks out of Arkham, and you see his back and hear his laugh. thats all we need to make everyone happy!

I love the Joker, but seriously... people are obsessing way too much over the importance of the Joker being in the next movie. Do you complain when the Joker has just had a story arc in the comics where he ends up in Arkham at the end, and he doesn't have an appearance in the next story arc? No? Well, then why would you complain now? He's a meaningful character but he doesn't need to be in every film.

You don' see him die or what ever in TDK. Considering what he did and could do in TDK it'd be stupid to lock him up and forget him. Maybe you weren't impressed enough with the effect of the joker in that movie. Seriously, Bale was bleh Eckhart was bleh etc. ... They were a lot of strange things about that movie that just wasn't good enough for me, like Gordon being like 55 having a 8 year old kid or Eckhart being a little too weak psychologicaly, I think his past wasn't deep enough... but anywho, I still thought the movie was great. Why?
'cos of the joker. Man I'd watch a 10 hours movie about the Joker and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.
All I'm saying is that unless Nolan gets a descent actor like Depp to do the Riddler (Or the joker) I don,t feel the riddler is as meaningful or intense as the joker. Nor the penguin nor catwoman nor who ever. When I think about Batman I think about the Joker like spiderman and the Green Goblin or Superman and Lex Luthor.
BB and TDK were no comics. I'm pretty sure a lot of people who don't read comics anjoyed these movies.

I don't want Penguin or Riddler. If they do a Riddler then have him like the Zodiac killer. A sociopathic serial killer with an obsession to match his wits with the cops and Batman and he feeds it by leaving puzzling clues.
Which lead to traps.
Eccleston would be good for this. No costume though. But have Riddler use a question mark logo on his clues though to establish that iconography.

I'd also bring in Talia not Selena. Something to make the story come full circle. Have Bruce blindsided by love and caught with his pants down. Not literally but you know what I mean. Do a semi Son of the Demon where she gets pregnant and then he finds out about her.

It ends with him thinking that she miscarried but then at the end it shows her coming back home and we see Ra's still alive. *fade out*

Booo... Ian McShane for the Penguin dammit!!!!

You remind me of a person I knew, that thought every flasky and flamboyant performance is the best acting they have ever seen, Granted, Heath's performance as the Joker was fantastic; nevertheless, brining the Joker back has a main villian would debase the character progression of the story, in particular Batman. I do believe that the Joker should appear in B3, only has an influence, showing the cause and effect of the destruction and choas he created. Which, conveniently is a major overarching theme in Nolan's universe of Batman.

Fake, fake, megafake. Absolutely no chance in hell that casting is even being considered at this point. First you need Nolan signed, his people selected, a concept, a script... the list goes on. Any casting rumours for the foreseeable future are bull.

I'm just saying that... There wouldn't be 3 Godfather without Al Pacino and thats the way I see it now with Heath Ledger.

I don't wanna green willy wonka.......

Some antibiotics'll clear that right up.

Personally, I like Depp as an actor but I'd rather not see him play the Riddler. It's doubtful the Riddler will have make-up to make the actor disappear into character a la Ledger and Joker, so it'd be hard to shake the fact that you're watching Johnny Depp acting, not the Riddler as a film character.
On a side-tangent, how would they play the Riddler anyway? Too frantic and frenetic and they'll call him Joker-lite. Too subdued and subtle and they'll call him boring. My own preference is for quietly creepy and unnerving, like (computer nerd alert) the G-Man from Half-Life 2. Yes it's a poor point of reference, but it's all that comes to mind right now.

I like welcoming the newbs into the forums! Alot of times they are flamed because they're new.

I know. I like that! :hoboj:

As for the campaign thing, the Political Forum is hosting a HYPE Presidential election to be held in early August. It's like the national election, but without all the mudslinging and dirty tactics. It's all in good fun. You should visit the PF! I don' think I've seen you in there before! :yay:

Kay. I think I will have a look at it. Sounds fun :hehe:

All this talk that Depp is 'too much of a moviestar' and 'too over-exposed' is way off the mark. Depp is 1st and foremost a fantastic character actor synonomous with choosing non commercial movies who just happended to go stellar with Jack Sparrow - truth be told, he's be great as Nigma.

Hoffman would be great as Penguin too.

It's just a pity that I havent got much interest in seeing those characters as the main protaganists in the next film.
