Arrow Dinah Laurel Lance/Katie Cassidy Thread - Part 5

Well, Roy started out as a thief and bad boy. Yeah, not Malcolm Merlyn levels of bad and Thea did take a liking to him early on, but he wasn't a straight arrow from the start and could've easily kept going down a dark path.

With Team Arrow now shattered into 3 separate teams and Black Siren “trying” to be Laurel, this would’ve been the perfect time to have her swoop in and help Oliver out in the field. Oliver needs help now more then ever and Felicity can’t help him that much in the field. Having him have to turn to someone who he doesn’t trust that much but can’t necessarily say no to would’ve been such a good storyline if they intended to go with a redemption arc for Black Siren. la sigh.

And give some classic Green Arrow/Black Canary (or Siren...) moments in the progress. Sounds like a win-win. I like that idea.

I think Quentin is the only person she cares an ounce for. Other then tht she just wants to be bad. Diaz tells her that she is bad to the bone and that he accepts her as is and she just came running back to him so fast it's embarrassing. They love having her play the lackey.

I'm not surprised they are treating the character like this but I maybe had a smidge of hope that this time things would be different?

LOL, as if they would put Felicity away from Oliver and have Laurel be his partner (even just one time on the field).....

I'm still hoping she's just being neutral (as in doing things that wouldn't really affect the outcome of everybody's plan even if she didn't help any side) and, near the end, Lance's life is in danger and she has to take a stand against Diaz and goes on to do her thing after that. She could go and open a flower shop and help the team once in a while, cut her coat in the middle and she would have a close costume to BC's Young Justice ...

IDK if that’s a good example of a redemption arc. Roy had the potential to be a great character all along & they somehow found a way to botch that up (in typical Arrow fashion).

TVLINE | In this midseason stretch of episodes, you’ve had more to sink your teeth into — whereas at the start, Evil Laurel was kind of, like, just looking fierce and stuff, strutting, sneering…
…screaming….

TVLINE | Do you feel like these more recent episodes have given you so much more to work with?
Oh, yeah. Absolutely. It’s so funny — I literally just spoke to [co-showrunner] Marc Guggenheim about this, because as an actor I want to continue to be challenged or grow, creatively, and that’s what’s these writers literally did for me, from Season 1 to the end of 4, and then I came back a bit for 5 and now it’s 6…. I’ve been really fortunate, so I love it. It’s almost like the devil’s playground, is how I think of it.

TVLINE | Now we get to see Laurel’s wheels turning. One scene that stuck with me was when she was holed up in the cabin with Quentin (played by Paul Blackthorne), sitting on the couch, and then at one point you almost “flip a switch” and snark, “Thea’s right, Daddy” — and you realize she was playing him the whole time.
Right, right, right. I know what you’re talking about. The thing that I think is interesting about this character is I do feel like there is room for redemption in some aspect. However, we don’t know what her life has been like on Earth-Two; we know bits and pieces, and that’s what I think is interesting about playing this character, how we keep finding out more and more information.

I’ve built a backstory off of script analysis and character breakdown, and while it doesn’t always match up, that’s part of the fun of it, just creating and being able to play — and these writers and producers certainly have been willing to do that with me. This is the stuff I thrive off of. I just love strong female characters in general, not necessarily because, “She’s evil” or “Oh, because she’s good.” Yes, of course it’s fun to play evil, but it’s simply fun to play any different characters.

TVLINE | It’s fun just to play complicated…
Exactly. And that’s what’s cool about Earth-Two Laurel — she’s kind of a loose cannon. You don’t really know what she’s going to do.

TVLINE | Every time we start to think, “Hmm, maybe Quentin was right, maybe he’s getting to her,” the rug gets pulled right out from under us. That said, do you think that maybe there is a half of a half of a seed of something good inside this Laurel, that can be cultivated?
As I said before, I do think there’s room for redemption — although maybe, personally, I’m just too forgiving of a person. If someone killed [someone else], you can’t forgive that kind of stuff here on our Earth, but definitely I think there’s room for redemption. I think she has a lot of explaining to do and understanding, and yet…. She’s kind of a wild animal. It’s almost like inside of her there’s this wild animal in a cage that wants to come out, and she wants to let it out, but also I think that she’s sort of torn internally, because I don’t think she was born this way. I think things happened to her that made her this way.

TVLINE | That’s why I think that the most interesting place for this to lead would be to have her be kind of a “frenemy,” versus full-on redemption. Don’t put her back on the team in a new suit, but in a pinch, you know, we could call on her.
Maybe she moves to the city next door? [Laughs] We’ll be on Wednesdays at 9 pm and she has her own sort of vigilante thing going.

TVLINE | How would you describe Laurel’s dynamic with Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) ever since they formed this alliance of sorts at his weird little dojo?
He keeps her on her toes. He makes her surprise herself, doing things she didn’t necessarily expect. I think that there’s a magnetic sort of, like, fire between them. What that reads as, I think time will tell.

TVLINE | It sounds like in Episode 19 (airing this Thursday at 9/8c), when they meet up with The Quadrant (a coalition of crime families), Laurel is going to start having some second thoughts about Diaz’s grand plan, or his means of going about it.
Ultimately, as she’s learning more and more and watching Diaz and how he works, she’s horrified because he’s brutally murdering people. There’s no rhyme or reason, which is disturbing. And although she has had that in her before — when need be, she’s been able to take down some people — it’s hard for her to watch and stand by this person. Plus, she does have this interesting relationship with Lance, with Quentin. Both of these characters [Quentin and Diaz] are making her question herself in different ways almost, almost like the angel and the devil. She’s caught between a rock and a hard place.

TVLINE | Has it been difficult to be so mean to Paul [Blackthorne]?
Yes, but it’s also been so much fun. And I think that he quite enjoys watching the difference in my character. [Laughs] The scene where she comes in and is like [in dainty voice] “Hiiii, I’m Laurel Lance!”? So much fun.

You know what it is? Looking back, from when we started the pilot to the end of Season 4, I took it so seriously — as you should, obviously, in continuing to be a professional. But I think also just life I took so seriously, and I was just…. I mean, I’m very dedicated, and I gave everything I had, but it’s fun when Black Siren makes jokes about that Laurel. It’s kind of like making fun of myself, and that’s been a blast.

With Marc Guggenheim stepping down for the 7th season, how much you want to bet that Earth-1 Dinah Laurel will be resurrected and that she will be a series regular again?

Well, they did discover 3 more Lazarus Pits, so it’s possible. At the same time, it’s been 2 years, so I imagine her body must be quite decomposed by now.

Laurel Lance is dead. She gonna stay dead. They are putting semi work into Black Siren so it would be useless to bring back E1 Laurel.

I agree, that would be a stupid thing to do at this point, but I wouldn’t put it above Arrow writers to do something stupid.

I hate how this most recent episode made me love Black Siren even more and hope that she gets somewhat of a redemption. Dont need her to go full good guy but at least give me Catwoman levels!

Daddy isn't going to be happy.

Weirdly enough...I think the writer's are doing a good job at playing us for once. Know how Black Siren was on her phone when Diaz brought Jesse onto the roof? Maybe I'm being optimistic but I reckon she was updating Oliver. Any interactions with Oliver and Black Siren have felt pretty genuine.

I didn't see her kill anyone with Diaz, and she's bad enough to be able to tolerate Diaz doing it, I'm by no means saying she's a saint. She's not revealed Oliver Queen as the Green Arrow, and she clearly could have, instantly and it'd be a better explanation as to why Oliver pushed Felicity out of TA if he was worried about his dangerous alliance with Black Siren.
As for killing Vince...Vince was a murderer...I don't see why this is an issue to be honest. Didn't Dinah Drake also kill loads of people before Oliver found her? Malcolm Merlyn was responsible for the Queen's Gambit wreck, and therefore responsible for Oliver's dad dying, yet Oliver allied himself with Merlyn plenty of times, and Thea even went off with him at one point, knowing all to well what kind of person he was. Most people are redeemable in a superhero show :P (maybe not NTA...but I'm probably just being bias against them)

As for her potential finished redemption...I reckon Quentin is going to die and that's why Sara is back in the finale. Quentin's death is what brings Black Siren over to Oliver's side, probably sacrificing his own life for hers. Which would be quite fitting as Quentin's original involvement with Damien Darhk is kind of what set in motion the events that led to Laurel Lance's death in the first place.

My only hope is if they do go on to redeem her, they continue to do it slowly, and if she's working with Oliver, they don't mess about and act like she's a sidekick. The real Black Canary isn't anyone's sidekick! :P

It must have been tough filming the death of Quentin for Katie...As her Dad died last year.

Black Siren needs to fight Siren X next year. Presumably Siren X is still at large somewhere on Earth 1 or maybe locked up somewhere?

I think coming face to face with her Nazi counterpart could bring Black Siren further along the road to redemption. Maybe she'll never be a full hero like Laurel Lance, but she could be an anti-hero.

I would also like to see a proper conversation between Black Siren and Sara Lance after the death of Quentin.

But give Siren X a new costume. It looks far too similar to Black Siren's one.

I wouldn't really have no desire to see them meet. I would like them to explore the Laurel element of it all. Siren is impersonating her doppelganger who was outed as a beloved vigilante. Seeing people come up to her thanking her for saving them, seeing criminals target her. All of this is just ripe for storytelling. Now more then ever when she walks into a public room people should be reacting to her.

But it appears that she may not get that much to do if Dsvid/Emily comments are anything to go by.

Well that would be interesting. What have David and Emily said?

Black Siren could pretend to be Earth 1 Laurel and say that Siren X is Black Siren.

This past season was very uneven in terms of quality, but Katie was one of the things I found consistently enjoyable throughout Arrow's sixth season.

"Laurel" is the DA again. All the interesting things they could do and they go with making her DA???? Star City really gives zero fraks.
