🌎 Discussion: Civil Rights, Affirmative Action, Critical Race Theory, Systemic Inequality, and Racism - Part 4

World News
Quite horrendous what happened, those officers should be spending a long time in jail. But it's important to consider the whole picture and look at the facts to see the truth. Most of those killed by police are white:

But a disproportionate number are black: Deaths Due to Use of Lethal Force by Law Enforcement

Unfortunately a disproportionate number of black people commit crimes so that complicates things:

There's some ignorance and misconceptions about police brutality. There are plenty of white victims that are also treated with the same disregard as black victims:

Police Kill Too Many People—White and Black

Daniel Shaver: Police officer not guilty of murder

Orlando pays $24,000 in fatal police stun gun incident

Ex-Fairfax officer Adam Torres pleads guilty to manslaughter in shooting death of John Geer

Why the police killing of this unarmed white man has not led to national outcry

Police responded to his 911 call for help. He died. What happened to Tony Timpa?

Texas police withheld records of their son’s death. Now they know why.

We can't deny there's a racial element to some of these incidents, perhaps quite a few of them and of course there's a rather sordid history with police violence against black Americans. But it also goes deeper and beyond race. It's about lack of training, incompetence, poor temprement, racism and a country awash with guns that gears police to be fearful and confrontational. The good thing is there seems to be unaminous condemnation from liberals and conservatives, even Fox News etc have been very disparaging. Let's hope this gets a conversation going and change attitudes so this becomes a thing of the past.

No... No there is not now nor has there for 60 years the same reaction to these things between the Reactionary Conservatives and literally everybody else. And currently, the reactions are the same as they have always been. The president literally said he was cool with mass killing those out in the streets. Check his Twitter. See who is approving.

This didn't happen overnight. This has been a long time coming and I'm sorry, but in the online world, if you've been going to the mat for those who have killed unarmed black civilians for the last ten years, despite the evidence so many of those killings had no real justifications, then you added to this problem by refusing to see what was happening in front of your own eyes.

A reminder... The current president decided it was in his interests to take out a full page ad in response to the Central Park "Wilding" case of the 1980's. He made the choice to start his foray into politics by promoting a totally fabricated racist lie aimed at the first African-American president in history. Is there a better example of the level of systemic racism in the nation than that fact?

Read what you posted. Look all all the numbers that you posted. Disproportionately black people and unarmed black people are killed in comparison. It's not close. Trying to remove the racial element at all misses what is happening completely.

Did you give your links even a cursory read? "Victims were majority white, but disproportionately black." HELLO MCFLY

I am speaking as a black man, college student, etc. reading those trumped numbers to try to say it’s more about race. Seeing that hurts because honestly It creates more misinformation than helps by any means.

Just like people using the argument “what about Black on black violence?” Let that myth go. Crime is ultimately based on proximity, socioeconomic status, and opportunity. (Like me saying what about “white in white violence”, using intracranial violence or saying blacks are more likely to going to jail is just as harmful stereotype).

This isn’t about “black on black violence” or “white on black violence”, this is about systemic racism and people using their position of power to target and murder black people. Not to mention, when they are murdered, the murderers get to hide behind positions of power and face little to no repercussion for their actions. Then people of the law or people defending their actions or deflecting their actions on black people rioting or protesting to get their point across.

If a cop can handle protesters fighting for the right for a hair cut or a school shooter with minimal harm, then There is no justification for black people to be murdered without seeing a single trial. It’s “innocent until proven guilty” for a reason.

Also I hate the “MLK wouldn’t approve” rhetoric . He got arrested, beaten and harassed for fighting for Civil Rights. He understood that they had to do what was necessary to create and ensure rights for black people. Martin said “riots are language of the unheard”, and considered “silence to be betrayal”.

The murder of black folks by countless police officers and alike that leads to acquittal is oppression. This has been happening over and over, it’s essentially the same story with just a different name.

Rant over

It looks almost entirely composed of women too. *epic fist-bump*

Because women get **** done, simple as that.
Its sounds like a good old "those damn feminists praising women" but ****ing hell, its true.
50-60 years later and mostly male driven politics havent done much against racism.

But its so strange, 2020 and white people form a line to protect black people...from cops.

Someone on top of you, beating your head against concrete is certainly a real justification for defending your life with deadly force. But please, ignore all the evidence that has been repeatedly presented to you and pretend someone was killed over a bag of candy.

Not when you followed the person home while presupposing crime for no reason (outside of the color of the person's skin) with a gun, after being told not to. But you sure like leaving that part out for some reason.

Also it is amazing that after this past week, this is where you decided to take this thread.

George Zimmerman was the instigator, but please go on pretending he's the victim.

You're...bad at this.

He was never told not, you know this. He was told "we don't need you to do that" in vague way for legal reasons by a dispatcher. You also have no evidence to suggest Zimmerman followed Martin based on race other than Martin is black and Zimmerman is not black. He didn't mention race until the dispatcher specifically asked what race Martin was. You know this too.

Someone falsely suspecting you of a crime is not justification for taking them to the ground and beating their head in. Especially since they never tried to detain you, another popular lie.

He continues to act as if a kid was killed over candy while ignoring the reality. There are real incidents to express outrage over, that isn't one of them.

1. Why did he follow the black kid then?

2. We know he is racist. He has made that clear since.

3. He wasn't simply suspecting him. He was hunting him. With a gun, at night.

4. The kid was murdered for doing nothing wrong. To argue otherwise says a lot about the person who said it. Emphasis on the candy is to show that a the kid was doing nothing but being a kid walking home, and was hunted down and killed for it.

5. It is good to know that as we watch America burn do to the racist acts of racists with firearms in America, that this is the discussion we are having in this thread. Again.

I don't think I've seen this in here yet -
That account was suspended unfortunately.

It looks almost entirely composed of women too. *epic fist-bump*
Would be even better if there were more white men defending the line too and I see a few there but not enough. That there needs to be a literal white line there at all should not be necessary but at least there are some people willing to step up and take the risk for others to protest (somewhat) free of danger.

Holiday, you and others have been warned to keep it civil and respectful despite the heated nature of these issues. Since you cannot seem to control yourself, we are giving a little break to think about how to engage with other posters.
1. Why did he follow the black kid then? There had been multiple break ins in that neighborhood, he suspected Martin of being involved. You'll notice the dispatcher immediately asked him for a description of Martin and address showing he takes the call seriously.

2. We know he is racist. He has made that clear since. You're judging his actions on that night based on his actions in the years after the shooting. He was immediately painted as racist as well.

3. He wasn't simply suspecting him. He was hunting him. With a gun, at night. He doesn't leave his truck until after the dispatch ask him which direction Martin was running. He slows his pace after the dispatcher tells him "We don't need you to do that". He walks to the end of the sidewalk, comes back and stands in one area. Then Martin shows up again.

4. The kid was murdered for doing nothing wrong. To argue otherwise says a lot about the person who said it. Emphasis on the candy is to show that a the kid was doing nothing but being a kid walking home, and was hunted down and killed for it.

An act of assault isn't doing nothing wrong. To ignore otherwise says a lot about the person who said it. Zimmerman says to the dispatcher at the end of the call he doesn't know where Martin is. He can't see him. So this idea that's been expressed again and again here he's stalked and hunted Martin, keeping him from going home isn't based on truth. Nothing Zimmerman did was illegal, there was no legal justification for Martin's assault.

5. It is good to know that as we watch America burn do to the racist acts of racists with firearms in America, that this is the discussion we are having in this thread. Again.

We're having this discussion again because uninformed people remain willfully uninformed while at the same time accusing the people who disprove their lies as racist even when their argument falls flat.

I have seen the narrative this could be ANTIFA. Which I guess is possible, but the cosplay has me suspect. Either way, I am very curious to see if we find out if there is anything to this.

Most of these MLK would not approve folks would of hated him if he was alive when they were.

MLK wanted to change the system which generally terrifies establishment types. They would be calling MLK a troublemaker and instigator.

Even now we have peaceful BLM organizers who get talked about like a domestic Al Qaeda in certain circles.

Right wing types have been pushing the false narrative that Antifa is some major threat for years now while downplaying the resurgence of white nationalists.
