nice to see the Frozen train chugging along in Japan!! :woot:

wonder if there's any indication which character is the most popular in Japan.......

And people thought that the only way for Frozen to do well in Japan was to feature a couple of upskirt shots of Elsa and Anna. :o

Someone posted the all time biggest 8th weekend list for Japan. It's not even close.

Today's numbers are just, wow.:wow:

Today has already broken the record as Frozen's biggest single day as of the 7pm (Japan time) update.

Yesterday Frozen had 96,537 admissions at the TOHO chain for the whole day, as of the 7 pm update frozen is already at 101,375 admissions today.
To put in context how big that number is, if Frozen passes 120,000 admissions with the evening numbers today will be bigger than its entire opening weekend in Japan.

Comparing today with yesterday's 7 pm update:

TOHO

Sunday - 83,153
Today - 101,373

KINEZO

Sunday - 20,401
Today - 27,317

Golden Week is over and today Japan has updated with actual numbers.

Totals:

12,651,168 admissions
15,936,910,450 Yen
$156,944,284 (U.S.)

Daily breakdown up until yesterday (Tuesday May 6)
Note that the 3 biggest days in its run were the last 3 days, all 5 of its biggest days came during Golden Week which started last Tuesday, the next biggest day was was back on its 13th day of release at the end of March.

Is Disney doing something over there in Japan that is making it so popular in that country?

I'll give you the answer right now. Elsa.

She's essentially an attractive animated Tsundere. One of Japans most beloved female archetypes.

It's kind of a perfect storm there. Animated movies in general do very well there, the #1, #3 and #5 biggest movies of all time are animated. Being released after winning 2 Academy Awards also helped, as well as adding the Sing-A-Long and dubbed 3D right before Golden Week. The rest of its popularity in Japan just seems to be that they freaking love it. Movies just don't act like Frozen has acted so far. People who know Japan boxoffice have said the average moviegoer will see 1 movie a year, even lower for older people. Big movies draw these viewers out, and true boxoffice behemoths will get some of these people to see it more than once.
Frozen isn't anywhere near done, but it is already the most attended movie since 2008, and 10th most attended movie all time, and it will only go up.
In Yen it's already #8

The countdown to Frozen passing Iron Man 3 as the #1 movie worldwide for 2013 is getting interesting.

IM3- $1,215,439,994

Frozen- $1,184,778,142

Less than $31m to go.

It looks like we are back to normal weekend numbers, well, "normal" for Frozen.:woot:

Saturday estimates are looking to be around 3.3m, Sundays have generally been about 20% better than Saturday, so if the trend continues we are looking at a hair over 7m for its 9th weekend.
This will be the first time Frozen has made less than opening weekend, but a 9th weekend only 500k less than OW is amazing.
I asked what the highest 9th weekend in Japan is and the biggest number anyone could find was 650m Yen (about $6.5m) by Spirited Away, so it looks like Frozen will add the #1 9th weekend crown to go with its #1 8th weekend title.
The legs on this movie are amazing, by Sunday it will have made more than 21x its opening weekend, and still barely even slowing down.

It's so far ahead of the competition that it will make more on Saturday than the rest of the top 5 combined.

It looks like Once Upon A Time next season is doing a Live Action Elsa

Ouat is the funnest show on television but has thus far flown under the radar. This is their chance to shine.

I was surprised by the Frozen ending, I thought that it would be Jafar.

OUaT is a huge hit for ABC, got a short lived spinoff and has even been used to promote Disney theme parks... It's not under anyone's radar in the U.S., I can assure you.

It's a sleeper hit that gets lost less attention than it deserves. I don't see it getting nearly the discussion that shows like Lost got or even Agents of Shield get.

If it's a huge hit, it's totally earned as it is in spite of its limited media exposure.

***************

Just Fyi vampire diaries got a spinoff show ... a moderately popular show.

Dude... It's been a bona fide hit in the U.S. since it started. Period. On a site like SHHYPE of course something like AoS is going to get it's own section and be talked about more. But... No, OUaT has been well received for YEARS now.

It's been pretty successful to varying degrees. I've watched it off and on.

Are they doing Elsa or the Snow Queen, though? This character seems a bit more sinister than Elsa, based on the swagger and the ominous music. The Snow Queen was much more of a villain.

If someone had told me 10 years ago that Disney's in-house CGI animation team would produce masterpieces like 'Frozen', and Pixar would be churning out insipid crap like 'Cars 2' and 'Brave', I would have thought they were crazy.

Remember how much people freaked out, when Disney's in-house production company was almost in charge of 'Toy Story 3'? Man, how times have changed. Hopefully 'Frozen' (along with some of the great stuff Dreamworks is doing nowadays) shames and inspires Pixar to go back to crafting masterpieces as well, instead of cynically cashing in on uninspired sequels or giving the green light to half-baked projects.

Disney has produced many masterpieces over the decades.

Disney has produced many masterpieces over the decades.

You're missing the point. In the early 00's to mid 00's, they were not making CGI masterpieces. In fact, their attempts at CGI produced awful crap like this. C'mon, man. It's pretty obvious what I was referring to. Their early CGI efforts were considered bottom of the barrel, but now it's like Pixar and them have swapped places.

So OUAT ...they're going all Elsa on this. Desperate much?

After the Wicked Witch disaster ...poor Elsa will probably be Snow's evil Cousin they have to redeem. Meh!

I just hate to see one of my fav Disney characters getting destroyed on this show. :cmad:
