Japan update.

Today is down -1.5% from last Saturday for Toho in admissions, 28,912 vs. 29,380.
That still puts another potential weekend increase in play as last Saturday was down -2% from the Saturday before that, but Sunday increased enought that the weekend increased +1% overall.
Also, even if it has a slight drop in admissions the ticket prices went up 8% this week so it could very well be an increase in the dollar total.
By the end of the weekend Frozen should be between 73m and 74m and still going strong and even in the unlikely event it totally collapses now it will still easily pass $100 million
Expect significant weekday drops starting Tuesday as Spring Break ends on Monday, the weekday drop will look huge, but is completely normal.

Someone on boxoffice.com posted all the movies in Japan that have made 100 million, 22 of them in total, so we can try and figure out where on the all time list Frozen will fall (I think it ends up between #8 and #10).

$100 Million Club
01 :: $244.0 - Spirited Away (2001)
02 :: $212.0 - Titanic (1997)
03 :: $207.0 - Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
04 :: $188.7 - Avatar (2009)
05 :: $165.5 - Princess Mononoke (1997)
06 :: $164.5 - Bayside Shakedown: Save the Rainbow Bridge! (2003)
07 :: $163.7 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (2001)
08 :: $156.0 - Ponyo (2008)
09 :: $147.8 - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
10 :: $142.8 - Alice in Wonderland (2010)
11 :: $130.7 - Toy Story 3 (2010)
12 :: $126.7 - The Last Samurai (2003)
13 :: $125.3 - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (2011)
14 :: $125.1 - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
15 :: $123.5 - The Wind Rises (2013)
16 :: $117.6 - Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)
17 :: $114.9 - Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
18 :: $111.9 - Arrietty (2010)
19 :: $102.4 - Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007)
20 :: $102.4 - Finding Nemo (2003)
21 :: $100.2 - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2004)
22 :: $100.0 - Armageddon (1998)

Another weekend increase is definitely on the table now, both admissions and dollars, as the evening update has wiped out what was looking like a -1.5% drop for Saturday.

Saturday numbers

Last Saturday- 58,906 admission

Today - 61,448 admissions

Can Frozen cross 400 mil domestic this weekend?

It's the highest grossing animated film of all time. It's a miracle it even got there.

Nope, probably around 398.9m. Probably 3 more weeks, maybe 2 if hits the dollar theaters next weekend.

I was close with 398.9.:woot:

Boxoffice mojo has updated with this weeks numbers, so close to 1.1 BILLION.

Domestic: $398.912 Million
Overseas: $698.4 Million

Total: $1,097,312,000

That moves Frozen past The Dark Knight Rises ($1,084,439,099) to #9 all time worldwide. It will easily pass Skyfall this week, and in 2 weeks should be #6.

1- Avatar $2,782,275,172
2- Titanic $2,186,772,302
3- Avengers $1,518,594,910
4- Harry Potter DH2 $1,341,511,219
5- Iron Man 3 $1,215,439,994
6- Transformers DOTM $1,123,794,079
7- Lord of the Rings ROTK $1,119,929,521
8- Skyfall $1,108,561,013
9- Frozen $1,097,312,000
10-The Dark Knight Rises $1,084,439,099

With the incredible run in Japan catching Iron Man 3 for #5 has gone from "impossible" to merely "highly unlikely". Frozen would need about 200 million in Japan to do it. Right now I'm seeing about 150, but crazy legs can happen in Japan and Frozen has put up crazy holds its first 4 weekends.

so it still made $300m+ this weekend??

that's better than what I had expected!

It lost another 17% of its theaters this weekend, but actually increased over +10%

$373,000 +10.4% 321 -66 $1,162 $398,912,000

How many movies can have this increase at the box office after its DVD has been released? :oldrazz:

Once movies are down to 500 theaters or less they tend to stabilize, and increases are fairly common.
Even The Not Job is having great holds now that it's down below 300 theaters, including a weekend with a big increase.
I'm hoping Frozen gets a big dollar theater expansion next weekend, it could go up over 500k, or even 600k next weekend if it does.

hopefully. that boost would really help.

it's not playing in my town anymore, so that means it's probably getting ready to hit the dollar theater.

posted this awhile back. love it!!

Watched this the other day with my daughter, thought it had good music and a good moral, especially liked that the true love act was for her sister but still felt it was pretty meh unfortunately.

Frozen is still doing crazy business in Japan.

As I mentioned earlier, Spring Break ended last week so it was expected that weekdays would have a big drop this week, but the drop is less than anyone expected. The drop is looking to be about -40% to -45% this week from last weeks Spring Break boosted numbers, which is phenomenal. To put it into perspective, this week (Frozen's 4th week) is only down -10% from its first week.

$150 million in Japan is all but locked, it's holding amazingly well and in 2 weeks it will get a big holiday boost with Golden Week. After that, it gets interesting. With the kind of holds it is having it could top $180m, but movies this big often get their runs extended. Spirited Away, Avatar and Howl's Moving Castle (#'s 1,2 and 3 all time in Japan) all got extended runs that added $20m or more, plus the sing-a-long possibility, which is a real wildcard in karaoke crazy Japan.

Mon-Wed this week is 4.6m with a projection of 7.7m by Friday. Frozen will be very close to 90m after the weekend.
200M is the magic number for Frozen in Japan, that would pass Iron Man 3's worldwide total making Frozen the #1 movie of 2013 and #5 worldwide all time. It would also put Frozen #3 all time in Japan.

Finally, Frozen is now officially less than 1 million from $400 million domestic as of today with a total of $399,001,514

That's amazing! Is there a reason why Frozen is such a huge success in Japan?

Frozen isn't your cup of tea,

No, as I said I did think it WAS A GOOD MOVIE, I didn't say I didn't like it, but this level of obsession you guys have with this movie akin to Star Wars, or Lost is surprising and strange for me to understand.

But if you think it's THAT THAT good, hey fine. Enjoy it! I am not here to rain on your parade. It's just baffling to me how this movie have so much discussion, that's all. :)

Let It Go in 25 langugages, behind the mic!

This is Frozen's 5th weekend in Japan, and it will still be higher than its 1st weekend.:wow:

Based on Saturday's 3.8m (380m yen) Frozen is expected to do 8m (800m yen).
For some perspective, that will be the 2nd highest 5th weekend in Japan ever, and the highest 5th non-holiday weekend. Heck, just the Saturday number would put Frozen at #16 on the 5th weekend list.

SO last weekend there was Wizard World here in STL, and I saw quite a bit of Elsa Cosplay, which isnt the point, and we were all stuck in the parking garage on Friday nightin the circular track down to the exits since everyone decided to leave at the same time. To give folks some entertainment I rolled down all my windows and opened my sun roof and blasted Let It Go and it echoed all over the garage and when it ended there was thunderous appaulse and horn honking because I guess I added some levity to the mind numbing boredom of sitting the the garage.

This movie really touch a lot of people it seems and that is awesome.
