Frozen is still doing crazy business in Japan.
As I mentioned earlier, Spring Break ended last week so it was expected that weekdays would have a big drop this week, but the drop is less than anyone expected. The drop is looking to be about -40% to -45% this week from last weeks Spring Break boosted numbers, which is phenomenal. To put it into perspective, this week (Frozen's 4th week) is only down -10% from its first week.
$150 million in Japan is all but locked, it's holding amazingly well and in 2 weeks it will get a big holiday boost with Golden Week. After that, it gets interesting. With the kind of holds it is having it could top $180m, but movies this big often get their runs extended. Spirited Away, Avatar and Howl's Moving Castle (#'s 1,2 and 3 all time in Japan) all got extended runs that added $20m or more, plus the sing-a-long possibility, which is a real wildcard in karaoke crazy Japan.
Mon-Wed this week is 4.6m with a projection of 7.7m by Friday. Frozen will be very close to 90m after the weekend.
200M is the magic number for Frozen in Japan, that would pass Iron Man 3's worldwide total making Frozen the #1 movie of 2013 and #5 worldwide all time. It would also put Frozen #3 all time in Japan.
Finally, Frozen is now officially less than 1 million from $400 million domestic as of today with a total of $399,001,514
