Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 1

Love Jeff but he's really aged the last few years. Back in his Jurassic Park days, certainly.
Agreed. I feel that way about a lot of the choices I'm seeing in these polls and lists. Marvel seems to like their leads in the late-20s through mid-thirties range. Yes, there are exceptions (*cough* RDJ) and I do think Strange will be on the older side, but I see Marvel aiming for someone 35-45. Folks like Jason Issacs, Gary Oldman, Liam Neeson, Daniel Day Lewis....they're just too old for this part. Even Viggo, although I'd make an exception for him.

Joaquin Phoenix
is still the best choice I've seen so far. Slightly against the grain, which I like. Fits the age range. Has the talent and the charisma. Wouldn't just play it safe in terms of his acting choices. My only concern is that the script might not be dark enough for Phoenix!Strange. But if they crafted a script around him as the choice it'd be great.

Jon Hamm is another name I've seen thrown around that I could see. Lee Pace could pull it off too.

Gonna have to say my complete short list for strange is:

Joaquin Phoenix
Jake gyllenhaal
Jeffery dean Morgan
Chiwetel Edjiofor

Leonardo Di Caprio
Adrian Brody
Viggo Mortenssen
Tom Cruise
Joaquin Phoenix
Jake Gylenhaal
Colin Farell

Gyllenhall has become one of the best character actors in the game.

Never thought of Gyllenhaal for this role. That would be awesome. One of my favourite actors nowadays. Loved him in Prisoners.

From Bubble Boy to Prince of Persia to now doing the weirdest of character studies onscreen. I always respect those guys that come up from doing stupid **** to brilliant work moreso.

I'm a little nervous with big name actors attached to superhero movies. I don't feel like you can get Joaquin Phoenix to do more than 2 movies max before he wants to do something that elevates the art. Or I feel as if he would do a Hugo on Marvel.

I'd be happy with a good actor who has not received much critical acclaim and is very enthusiastic about the role.

Yea definitely. His new film Nightcrawler looks nuts.

I think gyllenhaal would own the role and he'd work wonders for the character, considering he's an A lister who can carry the franchise and attract the GA to the character.

CBM says that Dr. Strange will not be an origin story.

Really? Even after all the times Feige has repeatedly gushed over Stranges origin? That's strange.

I just saw that news. I like origin stories so that kinda disappoints me if that's true. Also I dont think it'd be a smart move because Strange's origin isnt like Batman's/Superman's/Spider-Man's. It's not a well known pop culture staple so they should expand on it a little for the many people who don't know his origin

Devin Faraci says lots of things too. usually things that are meant to stir up the panic brigade.

Besides, "not an origin story" doesn't mean "you don't learn how he became whoever man", it just means the story doesn't focus on it.

And if you actually read the quote it's just that, the story opens up with him already in the role of Strange. They'll still reveal his origin, it just won't be the focal point of the film, which is smart.

So this is all on CBM and their ******** attention drawing title for the article they stole from someone else, as usual.

Could cut out a couple years after he goes to the Ancient One I suppose and pick up when he has a decent amount of his powers. Basically picking up a short time before he becomes the Sorcerer Supreme. So it wouldn't be like a Spider-Man 1 or Batman Begins kind of origin that way.

Actually isn't that what they did in the animated movie?

So I just watched Locke. I'm not sure why exactly, but after seeing it, I think I want Hardy for this role now. I know he's suggested for everything but if it is true that he's one of Marvel's favorites for this role, then I really hope it happens. Such an amazing actor.

That kind of approach reminds me of Batman '89, especially if they reveal the origin through a flashback or something. I think that could work. Considering how much Feige likes Dr. Strange's origin I don't see Marvel omitting it entirely from the film.

I say Ioan Gruffudd.

Evans got another chance and owned it. Maybe Ioan could pull the same trick.

I feel like if they are going to forsake a typical origin movie for Doctor Strange this is the way to do it as well.

I'd be down for this.

I want a Strange movie that is like a mix of End of Days and Iron Man 1. But more horror film. I just hope it doesn't turn out like ghost rider 1. I liked that movie but it wasn't great. And I could see Strange going down like that film if it's not done right.

I saw that. If Marvel now has a policy of no more origin stories, I sympathize with that. That being said, Dr. Strange isn't the Hulk, where the origin is relatively known with the public. It isn't the Fantastic Four (where I'd argue the origin is relatively perfunctory and unimportant). Drawing some attention to the origin is probably a necessity. If I hadn't seen the cartoon movie, I'd certainly have no knowledge of it. That's why a decision to forego an origin seems surprising.

On the other hand, having seen that cartoon movie, I could see this movie possibly retelling the same story and I admit that's not desired either. A good Dr. Strange origin story could take up the bulk of a film (and come off kind of like Batman Begins to a degree). I'm not sure that's desired either.
