He was in negotiations for it? I thought that all amounted to nothing but a rumor. Clearly I'm uninformed haha.
When the trades all confirm that he was in negotiations, it's true. THR (or was it Variety?) went as far as to straight-up call Phoenix the next Dr. Strange.

While I would've absolutely loved Phoenix as Strange, I personally didn't think it would happen because I didn't think he would agree to a contract that would run (say) 6 movies long. My thinking as of now is that they definitely had talks, but he wouldn't agree to commit to that many films. I mean, I definitely see it from his point of view. But oh... what might have been! :(

Jack Huston would be perfect from what little I've seen of him. The look is 90% of it and Phoenix could never have pulled off looking like Dr. Strange

Devin Faraci:
Joaquin Phoenix was supposed to walk out on stage at Comic-Con to be announced as the actor playing Doctor Strange. It was to be a repeat of what happened with Mark Ruffalo, who made his deal at the last minute and walked from signing his contract to a car that took him right to the San Diego Convention Center. It was going to be a triumph. That weekend a Marvel Studios insider told me they had tried their hardest, that they had pushed as hard as they could, but they couldn't close the deal in time.

Today Collider reports that Phoenix is still in talks for the role, and that he's at the "1 yard line." I can back this up - he met with Marvel this week. But the problems that have kept the deal from closing remain, and they go beyond the basic fact that Phoenix is balking at the heavy multi-picture contract: Joaquin Phoenix literally doesn't know if he can work on this kind of movie.

He's a great actor, and he can play the role. But the Marvel Studios blockbuster machine is full of pre-viz and fight-viz and green screen and massive reshoots. It's not a world that's as comfortable for him, and he's just not certain he can do it. And I kind of think this is a terrific piece of self-awareness, and a piece of self-awareness that might keep the deal from closing. If Marvel can get past any issues Phoenix has with the larger contract they still have to get over the doubt this terrific actor has about working in this larger environment.

Interesting. If that's true, it's a bit surprising that Phoenix is so skittish about acting against green screen and all that. He seems like the type of actor who likes to challenge himself. He'd be a great addition, but if he's not comfortable with it, then they should go after someone else.

I'd rather have an actor that goes insanely method than one that just looks the part.

At least he's aware of what he's getting into rather than blindly signing on only to potentially turn into a massive diva later.

That said, I hope he goes for it.

This would be such an epic signing by Marvel! I gotta try to temper my excitement until it's official but wow this would be so great.

From Jeff Sneider of "The Wrap"

As I've told multiple folks in private, I expect Joaquin to close a deal for Doctor Strange. Didn't even look into the Jack Huston rumor...

He also said that he thinks Phoenix will sign for 3-4 films and not 6-9.

Yeah, we don't need another Edward Norton.

If Feige and Disney can close out this deal for Phoenix it would really be a big step towards making Dr.Strange the next potential flagship character for the MCU once RDJ departs (or if they just stop making Iron Man movies and move onto other properties).

I would also give Marvel tons of props if they back off on their 6-9 film contracts and keep it reasonable with Phoenix. Sign him on for 3-4, let him work with PTA and Jonze and if all goes well with 1-2 Strange films and an appearance in A3, then they can sign him on for 3-4 more films and if not, then they can move onto other CB properties.

Either way, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this.

Pheonix as Strange I think could end up competing with RDJ being cast as Tony Stark in terms of fit and impact. I'd be ecstatic.

I hope that'd attract some great actors to join him.
(Javier Bardem as Mordo please :))

Huh?

How doesn't Joaquin fit?

40ish, Dark features, has displayed the various characteristics of Strange in many films before.

He's worried about working with green screen? He just made a movie where he falls in love with a phone come on dude sign the deal and let's get going also mads Mickleson for baron mordo needs to happen

So, Phoenix is just nervous about doing this type of film? Understandable, but to have an actor of his caliber would be such a win for Marvel and CBM's in general-- especially in the leading role...

Jonathan Rhys Myers would be good. Also not that expensive and would probably sign for a few films.

I like Phoenix, but I'm not convinced that he's the best actor for the role, and so much so that Marvel has to jump through hoops to get him. There are other quality actors like Cumberbatch and Hardy who I won't mind taking the mantle of Dr. Strange over Phoenix.
