I'm trying so hard to be the Shepard here...
Name me one film where you thought, I wouldn't want to mess with him?

Well Commidus was a nut job that did sort of have ultimate power as an Emperor.
Would Dr. Strange really require a long commitment from Phoenix? I would think that a 3-4 film contract would be sufficient for now. They could always renegotiate later on.
Serious, non-trolly question... What was the biggest box office hit Phoenix was in? How long ago was it?
Question: Do you think that Marvel is going to get a PTA styled director for a Strange film?
Read Devin Farraci's take from BadAssDigest to help calm your fears if Phoenix does take the job.
I want someone with less baggage.
Phoenix would be great for 1 film.
Have him as a villain.
Give a relative unknown the lead role and multi picture deal.
Make someone's career.
He doesn't have near the baggage the RDJ had. How'd that work out? If a talent like Phoenix is interested and appears to be a fit for the role, you try to make it happen. Simple as that.
Exactly, RDJ had way, way, way more baggage.
If that logic were always followed we would've had Tom Cruise as Iron Man.
Think about that.
I think you hit the nail on the head bringing up Chris Evans. As much as we think it is because of Marvel's success it's not a no brainer to sign a 7-9 picture deal. That is a massive commitment, especially for an indie actor like Phoenix.Right. I feel like that keeps getting lost in the equation. Sure, Phoenix's "weird career thing" happened more recently, but with his Jonze/PTA (and soon a Woody Allen) movie work, he's reestablished himself as a critical, if not commercial, success.
I think Devin's comments in his article are a little similar to what was stopping Chris Evans from signing for an extended contract with Marvel, in that he does want the freedom to do his own stuff. But it does also state that Phoenix wasn't entirely comfortable with the thought of acting against a green screen, which is understandable. The last green screen project he was attached to was years ago, wasn't it? Unless there was some work done on Her. I mean, for an actor of Phoenix' ilk, that's an understandable reason in my opinion.
I hope he signs on, if only his presence in DS will give me a huge reason to get interested in it besides liking the choice of Derrickson. I cannot even begin to wonder what he'll do as Stephen Strange, and that's exciting.
