Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 1

Well Commidus was a nut job that did sort of have ultimate power as an Emperor.

He looked like he was going to cry for most of the film. Commidus was a sniveling little s**t and Phoenix played him to perfection.

At one point in Doctor Strange he will have to realise his full power and become the sorcerer supreme. He will have to show it and be bad ass. It will be the turning point of the film but I just can't see Phoenix carrying it. He is a great actor no doubt, but he is not scary or overpowering.

If he does get the role, I hope he proves me wrong.

Phoenix still gives me the exact same feeling I had when they cast Ed Norton as Banner -- Great actor, but probably won't appear in sequels.

Marvel won't sign someone without the option for multiple films. It's either Phoenix signs for 3-4 films (a reasonable amount), or he doesn't sign on at all.

Would Dr. Strange really require a long commitment from Phoenix? I would think that a 3-4 film contract would be sufficient for now. They could always renegotiate later on.

My understanding is they want Doctor Strange to be a tentpole film up there as essentially the new Iron Man (the new premiere Marvel film). Given this, there's no question they want him for his own set of movies as well as for a set of Avengers films. If I had to guess, the magic number they'd like is six. The minimum number they'd want is two (one Dr. Strange, one Avenger film). But a recast would be a bigger blow here than it would be with Banner or Rhodey or Fandral (who, if I didn't know who the other actor was, I honestly wouldn't have noticed the change).

The Master and Her were good films but they didn't do **** at the box office. Phoenix needs some actual hit films on his record now and Marvel is a hit factory. I don't know a lot about Dr. Strange but I know Phoenix is a phenomenal actor who I think can do just about any role. Like I adore Paul Rudd but I don't give a **** about Ant-Man (I'm sure it will be a hit I just don't care about it) but Dr. Strange would probably be behind Cap 3 as my most anticipated Marvel film with Phoenix in the lead even if I don't think much of the director.

I'm going to agree with KRYPTON here. Working on a movie like Gladiator with Ridley Scott is more akin to working on Her, The Master, etc. than working on a Marvel film. They use a lot of practical effects, really well done set pieces, etc. It's very similar to what Ian McKellan dealt with going from LOTR to The Hobbit.

Working on a Marvel movies, especially someone like Strange, would require a lot of technological needs, re-shoots like crazy, pre-viz work, etc. Not to mention you literally give up x number of years to one character, when he's shown he's a 1-movie give it your all indie kind of actor. He's one of the best out there, no questions asked, but he does his thing. Then you bring in the scrutiny and crazy media requirements, and it feels like a "I'm Still Here" moment waiting to happen - which was a brilliant, but absolutely mind-blowing film/societal statement.

I would love to see him as Strange, but I feel like if we get him, we're getting him for a short go -- 1 or 2 flicks tops. Whereas I don't have a problem stepping down a notch or two for a different actor who can dedicate more long term to the MCU and maybe even be the face of it like RDJ has been. With the rumors that Marvel wants Strange to be their Iron Man equivalent (charismatic team leading face of the franchise), Phoenix definitely worries you a bit. If he can get past that, commit to 4-6 flicks and not have behind-the-scenes issues, then it will be a coup by Marvel. And I would personally kiss Kevin Feige on the lips.

Phoenix will be casting genius by Marvel yet again if they can get it done, BTW when we getting a DR Strange board? Really want to dive into some stuff! :p looking forward to this big time!

If Phoenix doesn't go through, I'm still very keen on John Ham, I liked him a lot for this role for some reason, he has a good presence to me and he's a fine actor. Plus he seemed kind of interested in an interview I saw for million dollar arm.

How does that calm fears? He's basically saying that a lot of people worry about his commitment and his ability to work in a different environment....

Didn't that piece quote sources as saying the deal was at the one yard line? Perhaps that's what he meant by calming your fears. The long term commitment seems to be the hang up, yet both parties are still at the table a month after the rumors broke at comic con.

I want someone with less baggage.
Phoenix would be great for 1 film.
Have him as a villain.

Give a relative unknown the lead role and multi picture deal.
Make someone's career.

He doesn't have near the baggage the RDJ had. How'd that work out? If a talent like Phoenix is interested and appears to be a fit for the role, you try to make it happen. Simple as that.

If that logic were always followed we would've had Tom Cruise as Iron Man.

Think about that.

Exactly, RDJ had way, way, way more baggage.

Right. I feel like that keeps getting lost in the equation. Sure, Phoenix's "weird career thing" happened more recently, but with his Jonze/PTA (and soon a Woody Allen) movie work, he's reestablished himself as a critical, if not commercial, success.

I think Devin's comments in his article are a little similar to what was stopping Chris Evans from signing for an extended contract with Marvel, in that he does want the freedom to do his own stuff. But it does also state that Phoenix wasn't entirely comfortable with the thought of acting against a green screen, which is understandable. The last green screen project he was attached to was years ago, wasn't it? Unless there was some work done on Her. I mean, for an actor of Phoenix' ilk, that's an understandable reason in my opinion.

I hope he signs on, if only his presence in DS will give me a huge reason to get interested in it besides liking the choice of Derrickson. I cannot even begin to wonder what he'll do as Stephen Strange, and that's exciting.

The logic is that Marvel has a great track record for casting and Tom Cruise wasn't cast. Given that fact I'm sure they were interested in Phoenix, went to his agent, then Phoenix in turn showed interest. Now we have negotiations. Whether it happens or not is anyone's guess, but Marvel has a big time performer at the table who could potentially enter the MCU. That's exciting for me.

Hey, it's not like I'm campaigning against the guy.
I think he's fine and if he's cast I wont be complaining about it.

I just prefer a new kid to get the chance to shine.

I think you hit the nail on the head bringing up Chris Evans. As much as we think it is because of Marvel's success it's not a no brainer to sign a 7-9 picture deal. That is a massive commitment, especially for an indie actor like Phoenix.
