Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 1

Jonathan Rhys Myers would be good. Also not that expensive and would probably sign for a few films.

He's a good actor, but he does have some personal problems that make him a bit risky to sign to multiple picture deal.

What's this abut Joaquin being cast? Granted, my buddy told me it's from Comic Book Resource just now, but I'd heard rumors about Jack Huston recently.

Would Dr. Strange really require a long commitment from Phoenix? I would think that a 3-4 film contract would be sufficient for now. They could always renegotiate later on.

Frankly getting Phoenix for this is on par with getting someone like DDL to play Darkseid in the DCU. You don't turn down someone for someone that's more than likely gonna do a lesser job with the role. This is the one one role where I don't want some young eager fresh face who has a couple good reviews, I want a ****ing thespian that will go nuts trying to embody Strange.

He's worried about working with green screen? He just made a movie where he falls in love with a phone come on dude sign the deal and let's get going also mads Mickleson for baron mordo needs to happen

He had the actress talking to him in real time during that movie though. I doubt he is afraid of the green screen, he is just your classical actor who prefers working on real sets and with the actual actors in front of him. Sir Ian Mckellan had a breakdown over the green screen, he got tired of it.

With Phoenix; Marvel is practically getting a Daniel Day Lewis class of actor. Good for them.

I like Phoenix, but putting him in the same class as DDL is way overblown imo.

There's always gonna be someone to take the mantle.

Serious, non-trolly question... What was the biggest box office hit Phoenix was in? How long ago was it?

I like him. Really. But... Is his popularity here on these boards not indicative of the way the general audience views him? His last two high profile films were THE MASTER and HER, and can we call either huge hits? Does he really have a huge following that will make or break a film? Does the mass audience love him, or do they remember him more from his faux public freakout that Casey Affleck directed? More to the point, is he of the temperament to fit into Marvel Studios? The only actor I can think of in the current Marvel stable that equals Phoenix in talent is RDJ, but Downey has been reaching for the brass ring of super stardom since he was young. He's shown that, despite his mid career self mutilation. Is Phoenix really going to do what he has to for a big budget SFX laden tent pole film(s)? Again, he is brilliant, and he can be terribly affable, as seen on shows like Fallon's. But he also gives the vibe of someone slightly off. I'm not trying to be the shriveled carrot in everyone's peach cobbler, but I'm not sure his casting in the MCU wouldn't be trouble, or that he wouldn't butt heads with others in the hierarchy. I mean, maybe him being cast means they have to get a director that can work with him AND style a film that can put butts in seats. I'm actually surprised at my reaction. He's a great actor, but I have a hard time seeing him in an MCU project of any kind.

To be perfectly honest, I am uber excited for the complete catastrophunk that a Joaquin Phoenix press tour for STRANGE would be.

Also, yeah the guy is on DDL-levels of pure raw acting talent. Very few actors today that I can make that assertion about, but Phoenix is absolutely fascinating to watch.

Marvel has great rep...they will put butts on the seats. I'm quite jealous cause I wanted him for Lex.

the actor himself so should be a little off hence the intense lobbying for him. strange is a superhero but he has to do some f***** up s*** to get the job done.

What was RDJ's box office appeal before IM? It's the Marvel Characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that bring in the fannies, much less the actor. Hire the best talent possible who could fit a role, then let the film take care of the rest. If audiences like the film and love the synergy of the actor/character in that role, then the rest is history (see Iron Man).

Marvel has said they want Strange to take the mantle from IM moving forward, so you need a charismatic actor (like RDJ) in the role to do so. Phoenix would definitely fit the bill.

You will go to the A2 premiere.

See, I kinda felt the same way when the Lex rumors were swirling. I just don't see him, despite all his talent, fitting into a CBM and I fear that he'd be a detriment to such a production. On the other hand, if the stars align and he doesn't clash with the Studio or the Director chosen, then man... That would be a Strange for the ages. Again... It's too bad I can't see that happening, the more I think about it.

Phoenix has never had any issues with his directors. PTA chose to work with him again instead of RDJ. Your fears about him are the same fears many had about RDJ.

Almost a done deal by pretty much everyone.

A three time oscar nom actor can't be epic? Get the hell out of here. Now I know you is trollin.

Oscar noms have nothing to do with it. You will have to believe that he controls ultimate power, that his mere gesture could destroy you. He doesn't have that look or presence.

Question: Do you think that Marvel is going to get a PTA styled director for a Strange film?

See, I actually had no fears about RDJ in IM. My friends that knew me all expected me to bad mouth him (most, not comic fans). And I told them it was pitch perfect casting, and that the experience of substance abuse would only enhance his performance (I was expecting DEMON IN A BOTTLE to come into play at some time. My bad.)

Again, though, Phoenix is an intense type. Do you see him making the compromises an artist has to when doing a CBM tentpole? What was the last film he's done like this? Gladiator? Signs? Why has he stayed away from such fare for so long? I mean, even the reports say that there is a possible level of discomfort he has with these kind of block buster productions.

I'm not trying to badmouth the guy or convince anybody of my view, I'm just calling it as I see it and sharing it with ya'll.

I just don't understand what type of compromises he has to make? The guy is intense but has always shown to be a professional. If marvel sign him for 5-7 films great,if they only get him for 3-4 that is also great. The fact that he did make bigger films in the past is a very positive sign. He took some time off and did the mockumnetary and came back to work with top notch directors. RDj will do the opposite when he is done with Marvel, he will go back do smaller films.

I'm trying so hard to be the Shepard here...
