Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 1

To me its more like the Michael C. Hall as Matt Murdock bandwagoning. Except Cumberbatch gets suggested for every role simply because he is Cumberbatch. Its like with Idris Elba for black characters. Idris is already in a Marvel role but people keep suggesting him for different characters. Its all kind of maddening.

They are not going to choose Cumberbatch, or Johnny Depp. When has Marvel ever opted for the obvious choice? RDJ certainly wasn't the safe choice for Iron Man, but look how well that turned out.

Only one who was ever really guaranteed their role was Samuel L. Jackson for obvious reasons.

“As far as I’m aware, even if that was the case, it couldn’t work out because I’m doing a little play called ‘Hamlet’ in London,” Benedict Cumberbatch told MTV of rumors that he's on Marvel's wishlist to play Doctor Strange. “So I don’t think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It’s a shame if I miss out, but who knows?” Were there ever any talks?
“I couldn’t possibly comment,” he replied. While Cumberbatch is making his San Diego Comic-Con debut for DreamWorks' Penguins of Madagascar and The Hobbit, it's believed Marvel will announce the English actor as Dr. Stephen Strange during its Hall H panel Saturday. What do you think?

Oh he is teasing way too much. If he isn't Strange, that is so messed up.

RDJ wasn't safe, but he was definitely "obvious".

I can't see how an obvious choice is a bad one since the choice is obvious for a reason. there is a reason why Cumberbatch gets mentioned that often when it comes to Strange (and to a lesser degree Morpheus) and that's the same reason why RDJ was obvious for Iron Man.

RDJ wasn't obvious for Iron Man......
Oh he was, he was my number one choice back in the day when others where hoping for Tom Cruise or DiCaprio or whatever reasons they had.

But yes, his personality was considered a good fit for popular interpretations of the Tony Stark character

What do we mean by obvious choice here? Because he fit the look and attitude to a tee. He didn't need to transform himself physically like Hemsworth. He isn't Scarlett who doesn't really match Widow at all. He isn't Batista as Drax.

RDJ was way more obvious then Cumberbatch would be here.

I picture obvious choices as in they're the first person mentioned for said role(even if they got it or not) ala Patrick Stewart as Prof X, Sam Jackson as Nick Fury, Kelsey Grammar as Beast, Angela Bassett as Storm(she was offered the role first), etc.

Is this the point where I mention those all worked out quite well. Well, those that got the roles. :D

Haha, I'm not anti-Cumberbatch, and I know my main issue with him are those that mention him for everything, not him himself.

I just really feel there are better alternatives for the role.

I think Cumberbatch would make a pretty good Strange. He's normally typecasted in villainous roles, but he can do smug and arrogant pretty well and is a great actor overall. Sure there are others I like for the role too, but I don't think we should rule Cumberbatch out just because he's a popular pick.

One quick question for those who mention that Cumberbatch gets fancast in every superhero role ever: Besides Strange and Morpheus (where his name doesn't come up nearly as much) what other characters was he fancast before, because I honestly can't remember?

Pretty much any and every role from an upcoming movie that had yet to have anyone cast.

I know I have seen him fancast as Mr Fantastic, Dr Doom, Quicksilver, Ant-Man, Ultron, countless X-Men, Namor, Braniac, Batman, Martian Manhunter. I'm sure I'm forgetting some I've seen, but I know there's more.

He's not an obvious choice as in, "Man this guy was born to play the part!" Its more like "He's white, he's got 2 eyeballs and he should play every superhero ever!". I want to throw up every time I see his name suggested now.

Still not half as many roles as Nathan Fillion and Morena Baccarin have been fancast for. :hehe:

People are still fancasting Fillion for roles (like Uncharted) even though realistically he's never gonna have a lead role in a big budget movie.

Or every single GoT actor fancast in every CBM.
Whedon alum & GoT actors have now become the default for these kindsa things.

Yeah, that time is quickly passing, if it hasn't already. He's relatively young still (43), but age has been setting in fitness-wise and he'd have to have an RDJ/Ruffalo-like role that hinges on his personality rather than his physical prowess (something that roles like Nathan Drake would certainly require).

I feel like most of the people who still fancast Nathan Fillion for things are just Firefly fans who don't actually watch Castle and haven't seen him recently. Anyone who's seen the last few seasons of that show can tell that he's well past his prime now. I'm a fan, but I'm just calling what I see. His window's long gone for any kind of physical hero role.

Yeah, I got into Castle this summer, and just finished the first 5 seasons. Mal is beyond quite a bit of fancasting at this point. He has really let himself go.

So Bats were you sad that Stewart was Prof X?

I have no strong feelings either way if BC is Strange.

I wasn't following the franchise at the time so I didn't really have an opinion - that said, having seen him in the role, he's really good. Which is what I'm saying about Cumberbatch - I'd love for, if he's cast, him to knock it out of the park. I'd just prefer a less obvious choice.
