Doctor Strange Casting Poll **NEW** - Part 1

Phoenix would be amazing as Strange. What a coup for Marvel it will be if they unveil him at comic-con.

I might be misremembering this, but I'm sure I read an interview with Joaquin Phoenix back around the time of the release of Her, where when asked what he'd like to do next, he said he'd love to try a big sci-fi/genre blockbuster, because everyone assumes he wouldn't want to do one and so no one ever asks him. The tone may have been joking, but still could be worthwhile posting up, if anyone else can remember it and find it.

Yup, also remember when everyone thought affleck was done with big budget comic movies? Show Phoenix your vision of Strange and your plan and it might be enough

I think in the age of people like Glenn Close signing up for superhero movies that you really shouldnt count anyone out.

The only actors that I dont think will ever do one is Daniel Day Lewis and Ryan Gosling. And even Gosling I could maybe see signing up

MARVEL? They have signed Jeff Bridges, Sir Ben Kingsley, Robert Redford, Tommy Lee Jones, William Hurt, Glenn Close, Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Micahel Douglas...You can't certainly count out anyone right now...I won't be even surprise when they can sign people like Day Lewis, Dicaprio and DeNiro (Possible BUT Improbable).

Why can't some of you just accept that some people dont care for Joaquin in this particular role. I love the actor and he's been fantastic in almost everything ive seen him in. Not against him in the role, just picture others in it and by the way I'm not a Cumberbatch fanboy. Good actor too but dont care for him either in this role.
I'm quoting you because I don't have enough time to argue this. You have my gratitude.

I don't see Joaquin committing for more than one (maybe two) films.

This is why if he signs on, I hope its for a villain role.

Whoever signs on to play Dr Strange will be signed to the same deal most of the leads sign on for now at marvel. So if Joaquin Phoenix wants the part he will commit to a longer contract. Otherwise marvel will move on to someone else.

This is probably why their has been no announcement yet. Joaquin probably doesn't want to sign a 6 picture deal and marvel won't sign him to just a 1 or 2 picture deal.

At the end of the day I think the deal will get made one way or another. But even if it doesn't that's fine. Marvel has had a good track record so far in the casting department. I trust they will knock this one out of the park as well.

Im wondering and this is too a lot of the Phoenix detractors

Hypothetically: If you knew for a fact that Phoenix would sign on for at least 3 film and do all 3 films would you still not like him for the role?

I could see Phoenix as Baron Mordo too. Granted, Mordo is similar to his character in Gladiator.

Not sure why some of you are assuming what Phoenix would do. None of us knows what's on that man's mind. He may welcome it to sign up for a big budget hero movie for 3 or 4 pics. None of us know. We don't even know if he's a fan or not. Lets just wait and see. Phoenix has done quite a few projects that shows his acting range. This is a fun meant to be summer flick with a big budget and more then likly a high payout for him. He may have kids and can enjoy this with them. I don't much about his personel as he is not media star but he may want this.

I like him for a role. And if he signed on for 3 films, or more (probably more if he's the lead), I'd be content.

However, I just don't see him doing that. Not without a generous amount of flexbility on when they shoot, and the time between films.

And I don't see Marvel agreeing to that.

I would have to imagine a six film contract, not a three film contract, since the goal for Dr. Strange is to have him as a major Avenger as well.

I hope not. Not everyone needs to join the Avengers, and Strange really doesn't fit amongst them.

Same here. I think the MCU needs to expand and show that the Marvel U is larger than just the Avengers. It has begun with the addition of the cosmic side of things and I hope we start to delve in to the supernatural as well.

I dont really want him in the Avengers either. I wouldnt be the worst thing but I think he's fine doing his own thing.

Honestly the only 2 other Avengers characters that I wanted to see after the first movie were Black Panther and Ms. Marvel; I didnt really consider vision but I think he's a good addition. I didnt really want Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver and I dont really want Ant Man/Giant Man or Wasp

I don't care for Ant-Man nor do I care for Wasp honestly. I don't care if either ever ends up in the Avengers, to be honest.

I also don't care if Strange ever ends up on The Avengers, but I think it would be a rather close-minded option to revolve the whole Marvel Universe only around The Avengers. At some point they need to think bigger than that.

Also it'll hurt the Avengers if the roster keeps building up. They now have what 8 members in AoU? 9 if you include Vision.

At best they can rotate characters out, but I'd rather they didnt

Well Isn't the thought that for Avengers 2.0 many of the current stars are going to retire? If you start excluding Lang/Pym/Strange etc you are running out of characters.

They could go the Defenders route. Even though I think Feige said the rights to Namor are a bit complicated, they already have Strange and the Hulk, and they could add Ant-Man or Daredevil or whomever they want down the line. Might be good to leave the Avengers after A3.

I wouldn't mind Joaquin in the role...but I think it would be a bad move since I doubt he would stay in the role for more than a couple movies and then they would be stuck re-casting again...i'm sure Marvel has considered this.

I don't know, but I imagined Kit Harrington (Jon Snow in Game of Thrones) as Strange. But I think anyone who can do a Mandrake the Magician impression might be able to do Strange.

That said, I wouldn't exactly object to a six movie contract. . . not so he can join the Avengers, but so he can appear as a guest star/supporting cast in other supernatural films.

If Phoenix agrees to a 6 movie contract... hell yes! He's basically among the small handful of actors that can lay claim to the "best actor of our generation" title. I'm still skeptical he'd be willing to sign such a lengthy contract, but if he is willing, this will be yet another absolute coup for Marvel.

And I agree in that I don't want him as a card carrying Avengers member per se. He'll be in Avengers 3 for sure because when Thanos comes a-calling. it will basically be "all hands on deck". Plus, he was instrumental in the Infinity Gauntlet comics. However after that, I would like Marvel to build out the supernatural side of their roster with Blade, Ghost Rider, etc. and have that culminate with a Midnight Sons team-up movie.

So, I'd look to add Strange for 3 solo movies, Avengers 3, Midnight Sons 1 and 2 for a total of 6. They would then be able to explore the 4 major corners of the Marvel Universe via 4 major franchises:

Avengers: Earth
Midnight Sons: Supernatural
Guardians Of The Galaxy: Cosmic
Defenders: Street

Didn't Marvel Studios give us a range of when we'd find out? I could have sworn they did, like something of "in a few months" type of deal.
