Also, I still don't agree with the 'Strange needs an A-Lister' argument. One of the main reasons I loved both Thor and Loki in that film was because, without recognising the actors, I bought SO much more into the characters. Also, I think Marvel have proven they don't choose 'famous' actors purely for the recognition factor, they have no bias in that regard, they look for whoever best embodies the character, so if Marvel has no such bias, why should we when looking at actors? Saying the GA wouldn't know them doesn't matter, because no one know who Hemsworth or Hiddleston were and I very much doubt that many people really knew who Chris Evans was, outside of comic fans/film nerds.

Strange is like a D-lister though, your average joe could look at Thor and recognize who he is. You kind of need someone with some clout to take that mantle. They don't all have to be mega stars in the flick, but Doc Strange will need that.

Iron Man was hardly an iconic, well known Superhero. Look at him now. Robert Downey Jr, whilst having been good in Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang, was not the household name he is now.

Thor was even MORE of a lower tier Superhero. Seriously, look at how Marvel have been doing these movies. You DON'T need someone with clout. More likely, what they'll do (again) is pick whoever best embodies the role, and fill the film with solid, supporting actors. Thor had Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman, Cap had Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving.

I don't understand how people can still be clamouring for A-listers for popularity sake. Does anyone think after Avengers, Marvel will seriously have trouble selling an MCU movie, especially with Disney's marketing? That they would jeopardise the most important aspect of a character driven film purely out of anxiety of the success? They've already taken much, much MUCH bigger risks, why would they suddenly stop doing so, especially with a film that has much less riding on it than Thor or Cap did?

I don't understand what you're trying to say, neither Thor or Cap were Feb/Oct releases. They were summer blockbusters that did perfectly fine. Where is your point?

No, RDJ was not a fluke, but it wasn't a casting based on popularity on marketing, it was a casting based one suitability for the character. Surely you see the difference?

It's 11 at night, I'm sitting here eating waffles drenched in syrup and talking about Dr. Strange. Is this not what we envisioned as heaven back when we were kids?

Well I think the Iron Man really sold well because of Robert Downey Jr. If Iron Man was played by someone who is just new or young, it wouldn't sold that much.

Imagine if Brad Pitt is Captain America, Tom Cruise is Thor and George Clooney is Hulk. Those films would sell more than $200 million in US alone.

Yeah, but the point is it sold well because RDJ was perfect for the role of Tony Stark, not for his name alone.

Do you understand why the success of these films has been in place? They're not splurging for short term hit franchises that fizzle out, they're in this for the long haul. They're trying to establish a huge, multiple hero spanning franchise that can just keep going. These are films driven by character, first and foremost, just like the comics.

The comics haven't been successful for decades for the action scenes or for how the artists look, it's always been about the characters. Sure then people love certain writers or artists, but again, it's because that brings out the best of a certain character.

Casting a character is so much more than just choosing someone who sells well, and that clearly hasn't been the priority of Marvel. They COULD have had Daniel Craig or someone for Thor or Matt Damon as Cap, that wasn't their focus. That's such an old fashioned approach to making a superhero film. That's the crappy, old Daredevil formula for comic films made by people who don't understand anything about what makes these characters work.

Huge celebrity + So and so franchise with fanbase = Heaps o money.

Now, how many films have followed that formula and have had many films as the MCU has had without a reboot or drastic change? We're up to 5 MCU films now, with Avengers as 6th and many more on the horizon. I'm quite happy to let Marvel keep doing things the way they are. If you want Daredevil and Ghostrider versions of Dr Strange though, be my guest.

Well Tom Cruise was attached to Iron Man for a few years. When he was promoting The Last Samurai he was talking about Iron Man being in development with his production company with him starring as Tony Stark.

I would not call Mark Zuckerberg a ladies man for having a hot gf. Stark spent a lot of time flirting and courting many different women. I read plenty of comics where he was charismatic. Not as comical as RDJ, but definitely charismatic. Tom Cruise just does not have it.
