^^^ I disagree with everyone of casting choices with the exception of Bruce Spence (mainly because I have no idea who he is).

Patrick Dempsey is NOT a good actor. I have seen him in nothing, including Transformers that shows me he can effectively carry an entire movie, let alone convincingly play the Sorcerer Supreme.

I can almost guarantee that Bale will not do another superhero franchise. Which I think is a good thing. There are a half a dozen other actors that I would rather see in this role.

Thanks for being so supportive.

I agree with Dempsey as the Sorcerer Supreme; disagree with Chris Bale as Mordo; and am indifferent to whoever plays the supporting cast.

As for Curry, I won't give you any grief at all over the choice, and I'd be perfectly happy with Tim as the voice of Dormammu. It kinda surprised me, though, that you mentioned Brutal Legend as your testimonial evidence for Curry being perfect for this role....I had naturally assumed you were going to mention Curry's outstanding turn as Darkness in Ridley Scott's Legend.

One need look no further than that clip to realize that here is Dormammu, incarnate.

I know, I've been hammered about that on the site I posted this cast on. It does sound like Dormammu right there. Well, you learn new things everyday!

^^Listen, you want support? Then convince me Dempsey would be right for this role. Other than the fact that he wants it, I have never seen him in anything that would stand out as a GREAT performance on his part. I don't claim to be an authority on all his work so maybe i am missing something. I am biased against Transformers (only because it was really bad) and, except for his stuff in the 80's, I have only seen him do Grey's Anatomy and romcom type stuff. Honestly he is underwhelming. Please point me to role that is going to change my perception of his abilities.

This thread has some really great suggestions, while others... not so much. Like a lot of other casting threads fans are more interested in nailing the "look" of the character and with no concern as to whether the actor is right and capable. Just because an actor can where a goatee well does not make him Dr. Strange.

I love John Cusack but based on his previous work, I don't really see him as Dr. Strange. Although I am interested to see if he pulls off Poe. It could change my opinion.

My personal choice? Guy Pearce. Sure he doesn't have the built in draw of a DDL or DeCaprio. But he is a solid actor with a great pedigree. I'm not sure I have seen him with a goatee ;D

Marvel to this point hasn't chosen the most bankable actors for their heroes, which I think has been great! RDJ was on the comeback and aside from Edward Norton (who they let drop anyway) Jackson is about their biggest name. They have chosen lesser known but capable actors and trusted in their abilities and good writing. I would rather see the A list dollars be spent on story and effects that in landing Keanu Reeves or Johnny Depp.

Guy Pearce with a beard. Closest I could come to a goatee.

I agree with you on most points here, especially that casting Dr. Strange needs to be a helluva lot more than just who has the best goatee. (Or pencil-thin mustache....Strange sported an Errol Flynn 'stache more than he did a goatee. But whatev.)

That being said: I'm not sure that the old-fashioned approach to Strange's personality will work for a movie. Back in the day, Dr. Stephen Strange was essentially a Dr. Kildare who turned into Vincent Price in a nifty levitating cloak. I think in the 21st century, you'd have to view both a surgeon and a sorcerer in far different terms than the 1960s. Surgeons these days are generally perceived as....well, like someone from Grey's Anatomy. And I'm pretty sure that's where Dempsey is coming from in his approach.

As for the sorcerer part....I just don't think fans would go for the hopelessly outdated Mandrake the Magician approach. A modern "sorcerer" would need to have an almost New Age approach to magic, in the vein of Charmed or The Secret Circle, to ground it in an "authentic" view of contemporary sorcery. None of this "by the hoary hosts of Hoggoth!" hogwash (heh...punny). In that sense, I could easily see Dempsey well-suited to putting a contemporary spin on a story of an arrogant prick surgeon who loses his career and goes on a spiritual quest to reinvent his life and find new meaning and purpose through real magic.

Sam, I agree with your thoughts regarding the necessity to update the character. I actually thought the animated Dr.Strange movie Marvel released some time ago was a very good take and underrated. However, I still need someone to help me see that Dempsey is the right guy for this role. I just don't see him as someone who can carry a franchise. I honestly haven't watched Grey's Anatomy enough to evaluate his work there, but that is an ensemble drama I believe. I'm not sure that is a valid gauge of his skills. His movie work has been romcoms and the recent Transformers. His performances have ranged from unremarkable (Freedom Writers, Sweet Home Alabama) to dreadful (Enchanted, Transformers and Made of Honor). While I generally dislike romcoms, I actually really liked Enchanted but I thought his character was the worst part of that movie.

To date Marvel has cast capable veterans (Downy, Jackson, Norton) or up and coming talents that have demonstrated significant ability (Renner, Scarjo, Evans). Hemsworth was kind of a wild card but his role in Star Trek generated really positive buzz and I subsequently saw him in A Perfect Getaway which I thought was really good. However, Thor is the one character that I would say requires a certain look. IMO that drastically shortened the list of actors for that role.

Dempsey just doesn't have the pedigree I would want or that Marvel typically looks for (to date anyway). Is there a particular role I need to see that demonstrates some underlying talent?

I'm not saying he can't do it. This might be "The Role" that changes all that. I do admire the way he has pursued the part but I don't think he has worked hard enough to show he deserves this part.

Marvel will not shell out the cash for a Dicaprio and DDL has already said no way to superheroes. If I were casting, this role especially, I would look for underrated actors with a solid body of work. Someone who has demonstrated VERSATILITY and PRESENCE. Using that criteria Dempsey does not jump to mind.

I know I repeat myself, but I really want to see Benicio DelToro in that role...

i want tim curry as the voice or role of mr sinister. i know different company.

as for dr strange you want to talk mustaches, lol? here it comes

Well, since my personal favourite for that part, Benicio del Toro, just got the chance to play the antagonist in Star Trek (1)2, I doubt he will play SS too... I might have to look for another favourite, so I say: Ewan McGregor.

oooo, I like Ewan McGregor for the role, he's great in pretty much everything lol, except that cartoon pigeon movie he did, but that wasn't his fault.

so, no new news about strange in the last month? that sucks. I want this movie to happen very soon, 2013 or 2014... They need to hurry up a little bit.

How about Eric Bana? he's great when he's play someone with quirks or someone other than the white-generic lead.
-Star Trek
-Chopper
-Munich
-Hanna
-Romulus, My Father

he was 2 Dr Banner's ago i doubt anyone would care now

Crispin Glover
just because we need somebody who can act but also not very well known like deep.(deep)

as much as i love crispin glover, he has too much of a creep factor that's pretty prevelant in all his roles. he's great for a secondary character, but he's too creepy for a lead.

Anyone else thinking that John Turturro might end up cast as Baron Mordo? I have a hunch, don't know why...

Daniel day-lewis = Doctor Strange...match

I'm a big Doctor Strange fan and even though it is currently unknown if we'll be getting a film, I'd like to see people's ideas.

- What actor would you like to see play Doctor Strange?
-Which villain would you pick for the film? And what actor would you like to see playing him/her?
- How about supporting characters (Clea, Wong)?
- Any particular storylines you would like to see portrayed on the big screen?
- Any directors who would do justice?
- Any script ideas?

So I would just like to see and discuss people's ideas and wishful thinking of other Strange Fans :)

I'm going to throw a new name in here. Sam Witmer from Smallville and Being Human. He seems to have the right style and would be young enough for sequels. Definitely couldn't buy Dempsey.
