Okay, let's right now skip aside the usual banter. The Sentry is another take on the Superman myth. That doesn't change his dramatic possibilities. Marvel has been playing with their own variant on the Superman myth in Hyperion for years now. No matter how people talk about Superman as a tired character, people keep coming back to him for a reason. There's something wonderful about the strongest and most powerful man in the world that just happens to be just like us.
Paul Jenkins take on the Superman mythos in the Sentry is a character that is essentially the opposite of Hyperion. Hyperion is the "guy like us" that is essentially freed of having any moral restraints because he realizes that no one can stop him if he chooses to do what he wants. The Supreme Power version is much more clearly the ****ed off Superman. Robert Reynolds is the guy whose fundamentally incapable of being a hero and wielding his power yet has it anyway.
Now, my biggest problem with the Sentry is two problems.
1. The first problem is that I don't actually buy the Sentry's past. This is probably deliberate as essentially there's no real way to verify anything that Robert Renyolds remembers. Mastermind created the Void along with the help of the General. That roughly means that anything that Robert remembers with his 'arch-foe' is questionable. However, MOST of what Robert remembers is related to the Void!
2. Robert doesn't strike me as a man whom could have ever been a superhero in the past. If we ever saw a "legitimate" Sentry past, I'm pretty sure it'd be a very interesting storyline that nevertheless is a lot different from the glory years that Robert remembers.
However, we've seen no sign that Roberts wasn't the Awesomest that he thinks he was.
Frankly, the biggest problem with Robert Renyolds right now is the fact that he spends most of his time brooding on stuff but never doing anything. It's a real question about why exactly he continues to put on his Super-Suit when we haven't even heard a "with great power comes great responsibility" from him. It's strange but for such intensely psychological issues as the two Sentry series.
Not one has stated "Why do I continue to torment myself with this lifestyle?"
