Don't Hate The Hater, Hate The Hate! - Part 13

No, I don't think it is. In my geometry class, the teacher always had us do our 'homework' at the end of class. We'd work together, help each other out, and it would still stick (partly because the best way to learn is to teach others).

Add another month to the school year, and you'll find that classes can become more decompressed, more can be taught, and homework can be drastically reduced, if not eliminated. All that would probably still be done at home would be the occasional paper. And maybe a weekly assignment that's a refresher on for what was covered during the week. Not this daily stuff in a half dozen subjects.

I agree with all of this. Education does need an overhaul. I also think that comprehension should be the focus, instead of memorization. Being able to just recite facts instead of actually knowing what you're talking about is kind of a problem.

Oh wiegeabo we always clash :o it is needed. It shows you can do the work by yourself, independently. It's good practice for tests. I do agree that you shouldn't get it daily for every subject however.
Yeah, this is why I really liked college more than high school, because I would get math homework on a Monday and not have to worry about it until Wednesday, while I would get science on Tuesday and not have to worry about finishing it until Thursday. It was easier to focus on a certain subject, rather than just trying to get all my work down in a few hours after school.

And I agree, homework is certainly needed to teach you how to work on your own and to test how well you really paid attention in class.

Exactly. I don't want to sound like I'm bragging, but I really loved math homework because math was easy for me and I really did enjoy doing equations on my own at home. But other subjects like science were my weakness and I struggled, so to prepare for a test, I would just cram the night before and forget everything after the test. Only with hindsight now do I really that that was a bad idea, but it just goes to show how much people just want good grades without putting in too much work.

This part bothers me.

Why is that? In exams, you don't have a teacher there to aid you. I'm being given practice exam questions to take home as homework. By doing this I learn how to answer the questions without the aid of a teacher/class mates, which is what the situation would be in the exam.

My classmates are nice women and two of them are quite attractive ladies but I swear that they wander off topic so much that it makes me crazy. We have very simple assignments to do but they suddenly stop talking about it just to talk about something totally unrelated just because they thought of it. Today they talked about the socks that one was wearing and later about getting into classes at another university. Meanwhile, I just want to get our classwork done.

:wall:

Most of my classes are ruined by those who talk loudly throughout :o it too drives me crazy!

While I agree, I also know that there are a lot of people who are just bad at taking tests. There's something about knowing you only have a short amount of time to solve problems or write something that adds a bit of extra pressure that can throw you off. I think tests are a good exercise, but I don't think they always accurately reflect how well someone knows a given subject.

Agreed. Tests are a flawed system.

I'm a great test taker. I almost always thrived on the time pressure and was usually one of the first to finish.

My sister is a horrible test taker. She chokes. She knows it all. But tests screw her over. Her brain locks up.

I hate seeing my loved ones sick. Just found out my 5 year old has to stay overnight at the hospital.

Sorry to hear that Hotwire. :(

Hope everything turns out ok!

I don't like tests either. I take a long time to do stuff, so I usually barely finish most tests on time. Thankfully I'm allowed to get extra time. I also hate it when I study, and I draw a blank when I get the test and I remember 10 minutes into the test.

Wow, that really sucks. Hope everything works out.

I have a 2 1/2 year old and it kills me when he just has a cold, seeing him so miserable.

I hate finals. I've been writing papers almost non-stop for two days.

This.

I also hate group projects. We have a research class group final that we have to present on Thursday, and my group is making me do all of the heavy writing. The annoying part is, I need their data to write the results and conclusion. We're supposed to meet with all of our parts done tomorrow, but it's impossible for me. So I know I'll be pulling an all-nighter tomorrow night.

I'm thankful I have no group finals. I do have a test tomorrow I'm certain to fail. It's a constellation quiz. The instructor is gonna put the night sky up on the planetarium and I have to go in and identify everything I see. I'm gonna fail.

That at least sounds kinda fun. You should just start making up constellations.

Yeah I'm looking forward to identifying the Yoda constellation in the Alderaan system. I can't tell one constellation from the other. I'm ****ed.

You should at least know the Big Dipper, right?

Yeah, the dippers are easy and stuff like Cygnus and Andromeda are pretty simple, but they want us to be able to locate individual star locations.

In that case, I suggest cram & start looking at images of potential constellations that might come up.

Start with the Dippers and Orion, they tend to be the easiest. Try and associate the position of other stuff based on where they are compared to them.

Of course, I say they're easy, but I can never find the ****ing Little Dipper when I go outside. :cmad: Big Dipper? Easy. And I follow it just like I'm supposed to...and there's no goddamned Little Dipper!

You're speaking about the exam as though it is the ultimate goal of your education. That's what bothers me.

You said it's "good practice for a test," not, "a good way to permanently retain the information and concepts."

There's an enormous difference. This mindset is part of the reason that people cram for tests and soon after forget all of the applied concepts.
