You're speaking about the exam as though it is the ultimate goal of your education. That's what bothers me.

You said it's "good practice for a test," not, "a good way to permanently retain the information and concepts."

There's an enormous difference. This mindset is part of the reason that people cram for tests and soon after forget all of the applied concepts.

This is exactly my issue with the education system as it stands.

Which also factors into why students lose about a fifth of what they learned during summer vacation. But mostly in the fact and procedural (like math) areas that most students just try to cram and memorize, less so in the more conceptual areas like reading (the subjects where students actually comprehend and integrate).


And to bring that topic into the thread, I hate the people who say they hate math. What they should be saying is, I hate my math teacher. Because, what I've found from helping and tutoring, most of those people weren't taught why the math works and how to think about math. They're just given a bunch of formulas and techniques to memorize without clear context and reasoning.

And I have personal experience with this. I'm a math wiz (not ashamed) and was considering minoring in math in college. Yet, my first algebra teacher was terrible, and I just sloshed through. But Geometry, Trig, and Pre-Calc were easy A's because of great teachers. Had a bad teacher for Calc in high school, and I was mediocre. Had a good teacher for Calc in college, aced it. Bad teacher for Calc II, limped through. And two more bad teachers later on knocked me out of getting my minor because I didn't have time to retake the classes (and they were the only ones who ever taught those classes, so screw that) . For one of them, their definition of teaching was writing long differential equations on the board, and expecting us to understand them almost no explanation. It was the only class I ever had to drop out because of my grade.


...I hate bad teachers.

Yeah, I mentioned how I was very confident in my math skills in high school, and there were times where I would get a 94 or 96 on a test because of a couple of mental errors, even though I knew the material. But in other subjects, I would be more prone to cramming the night before, and looking back now, I really do regret it. I didn't always ace those tests, but still the fact that I passed up the chance to learn is what I regret more, especially now when I watch or read stuff and remember hearing about it in class and being much more interested in it now than I was back then.

Your premise is flawed, but I did miss the earlier comments about tests. That's my bad. Apparently I need to pay closer attention. I just can't keep up.

I hate it when people try to create a pity party for themselves. It's one thing if you have certain issues that you can't control, but if you just sit around and complain about how people don't talk to you, yet make absolutely no effort to talk to them, and then try to make people feel sorry because you are "alone", then I'm not going to feel sorry. I've been there before and I learned that if you're not willing to change what you can, then you shouldn't be whining about how it doesn't change.

I get this, but I think it brings up another question, which is what are students graded on?

I know every teacher has breakdowns of their personal grading system that factor in things like attendance, homework, participation and tests, but do the grades accurately reflect the student's capability?

Personally, I got good grades overall and I never cheated or anything in high school, but one thing I did do was judge the teacher and learn how to get around them. Like I would do just enough to get a decent grade in a class that I wasn't interested in. I know I was a better student and could've put more effort, but I knew that what I could get away with and didn't always do what my grades would reflect that I did. More often than not, I got good grades without learning much.

Wow, good luck, I wish you the best. I know several people who have had similar issues and how horrible it can be.

You haven't made the case that homework is necessary to prep for exams. It certainly wasn't for me.

If you were merely illustrating the path of the discussion in defense of your "tests" post, that's fine. No problem there. I already acknowledged that I was mistaken in that case.
