$85 million is well above initial projections. Also, it's a freaking Doctor Strange movie.

He's never been an A-list Marvel character.

Maybe not A-list, but imo he is historically at least on level of Iron Man and Thor. It's kind of weird it took this long to get movie of him.

Iron Man himself used to be a lower tier character even below the X-Men. Now he's the ****ing flagship mascot of Marvel.

I suppose he was talking historically across the board.

Ahhh, well there you go.

Iron Man despite being very much a B lister in terms of global GA awareness before his origin film, has always been a rung above Strange. And Marvel wouldn't have made their first studio film an Iron Man film otherwise. We are getting into the C list now with how well Marvel's initial phases have gone with the likes of Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Strange (all characters I love). And even then there is every chance they can all be as successful as the original big 4 characters were. (I guess TIH wasn't that succesful).

^ ironically I remember as a kid in the 90s these Marvel characters were the most popular

1. Spider Man
2. Venom
3. Carnage
4. The rest of Spider Mans villains
5. Wolverine
6. The rest of the X-men
7. Hulk
8. Fantastic Four
9 Iron Man
10. Punisher
11. Ghost Rider
11. Daredevil
12. Captain America
13. Thor
14. Everybody Else

Doctor Strange I knew of as a kid but his comics were not best sellers in the 90s he had no cartoon of his own but would make appearances in Ghost Rider's comics and crossovers and big story arcs like Infinity Gauntlet and when he showed up you know things were serious and stakes were high and that he wasn't going to mess around. Definitely one of the most powerful super heroes but looked very circus like

lol, and the rest.

That list is accurate, but I'd say the F4 would be ranked higher than Iron Man because they cameod a lot more than the others, had their own notable games and placement in MARVEL Vs games, and had their own cartoon as well.

Seems reasonable overall that list. Popularity is a bit different to GA awareness of course as characters like Venom became huge for a short time in comic circles without penetrating much further while Cap may have been slightly less popular at the time but most people would have heard of him even without reading a single comic or affiliated product. Dr Strange never featured near the top on either measure of course.

i understand why venom is popular but carnage was THAT popular? like even more so than the x-men?

my prediction:
domestic: 210m
overseas: 500m
total: 710m

the special effects and ben ***'s popularity will give the movie good legs

Actuals should fall right around the estimates or slightly under according to EC on BOT.

I hope this has a really strong second weekend. Arrival looks really good, and I plan on catching that this weekend, but I think Strange still comes in no. 1, and hopefully we might see a low 50% drop as apposed to the standard -60% for this genre.

Strange is probably the best origin film Marvel's done since the first Iron Man. A slight caveat in that I don't really consider GOTG an "origin film", I'm sticking to the more formulaic Superhero film, i.e. guy without powers, has accident gains powers, learns great responsibility, bla, bla, bla, etc.

Those would be fantastic numbers imo. All I hope for is the film to be a success, need another cup of tears from the Marvels first flop people.

This movie is definitely a success, its OW numbers both internationally & in NA have proven that. Over $300 million in 13 days is a hell of a start.

No way this thing doesn't hit at least $700 million.

I think he means the X-Men individually rather than as a whole team as they were obviously huge in the 90s. Carnage was super-popular for about 2 months lol.

It's official.
