I didn't like Avatar at all. I'm more than happy to see Star Wars overthrow it (even if I haven't seen it yet).

Estimated daily breakdown for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS: FRI - $49.34M, SAT - $56.59M, SUN - $47.59M #StarWars

It doesn't matter if it beats Avatar or not. I don't care if it does.

I think doing another 100mil will be tough with that number. Good drop though.

It has supposedly hit 1B WW this weekend.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS: $546M Overseas Total / $1.090B Global Total #StarWars #TheForceAwakens

I don't even care for Avatar as a film but the call for that film's demise was as silly.

I must say that The Force Awakens success doesn't depend on it beating Avatar worldwide. It's going to make over 2 billion, it will be an incredible success no matter what. It loses nothing if it doesn't best Avatar.

I got into an argument with someone that said that Aliens, Terminator, and Terminator 2 aren't classics.

BOM has $544.5m domestic now with the weekend at $153.5m.

Welcome to the 1B club! Next up, the exclusive 2B club! :D

To me it was a technical marvel, even more apparent in the years since where no other film has come close to delivering 3D depth worth a damn. But it's nowhere near one of my favourite films, the technology was by far its biggest achievement. Some seem to let how much they like/dislike a film rule their opinions on box office (not that it isn't an indicator as a member of the movie-going pubilc, just a very small sample size ;)).

No need to argue this kind of thing. You both know that he/she is wrong. :woot:

Avatar was something you just needed to see in 3d. In a lot of ways, it kind of reminds me of Xenoblade Chronicles X. I don't care about the story, but I just want to marvel at the landscapes.

Yep. With a Jurassic film I want great human characters, at least memorable like the first film. But if the dinos are out of this world I will always go and see it however bad the human actors/characters are.

What does it say that 7 of the top 50 movie grosses all time happened this year?

3. Jurassic World
5. Furious 7
6. Avengers Age of Ultron
10. Minions
15. Star Wars 7
44. Inside Out
45. Spectre

Our economy is recovering. :o

So...star wars is going to blast those little yellow sh=€s outta hyper space next...then smash the avengers. Zoom past those pitiful earthling vehicles and set it's sights on that boat and then those pesky blue kitties :)

Worldwide numbers are rising mainly because of huge expansion in a good number of developing overseas markets (plus the creep of worldwide inflation).

I'd expect a good number of the top films every year to be getting up there.

I was very interested to see how while Jurassic world would do. I thought it would do while because from previews it looked good. It was hard to really say though because it was the first movie in the franchise in 14 years. So with it being that long the international market is way different then it was back then and the another movies didn't have 3d plus then you have inflation. I thought JW would make around 1 billion when it was all said and done but not 1.6 billion. Star wars I thought wouldn't make even close to has much has people though because of the prequles. I thought they would have to earn peoples trust back first and that if they did that then 8 could do crazy numbers. Instead 7 is doing more what I thought 8 would do if 7 was good.
I was the same on Star Wars. I thought it would take longer than the opening weekend for word to get out that Star Wars was properly back but I didn't foresee the reviews being so universally positive (even if the average ratings were more 4 star than 5 star), maybe nearer to 80% on RT. That means pretty much every person who read/saw a review saw a positive one and with social media nowadays the momentum built even quicker than it might have in the past. I was expecting a film of this quality from Abrams (not that he's my favourite, just think he's a reliable guy for projects like this) but I thought the real impact would be felt in the sequels when everybody would be on board. Looks like those reviews and the trailers were enough to convince everyone right from the off that Star Wars is well and truly back!

That people are so depressed by real life that they prefer escaping it to the cinemas now more than ever?

I'm not depressed!

Life is good but Star Wars is better! :woot:

This'll easily shoot past 760 million, I think. Avatar's time is done.

Wow, they made all that money without my help this weekend...

These next few dailies are going to be very interesting.
