Yep. And it did it before 3D and other premium formats.

Didn't know that HK reception affects mainlands reception, interesting.

It doesn't effect it, but there is some commonality.

Star Wars is the proven king of nerd/geek franchises.

Not only can it achieve the huge box office numbers of Avatar but it's also iconic and universally recognized.

The picture seems to be changing slightly, with China developing its own market and becoming its own thing. Back in HK cinema's heyday it was the one calling the shots.

Which is why I laughed/rolled my eyes whenever a new movie would come out a hit, and the fans would always declared "This is this generations SW!" It just totally underestimates SW continued impact and influence on global pop culture, even pre-Disney buy out.

Most recently it happened with GotG. And I lol'd.

It happens with every decently successful geek property, it seems, and every single time it's ridiculous.

That is my point. Avengers, while beloved, was more novelty then something like Star Wars is. Star Wars is the genuine cinema king. Just look at the ticket sales for the movies people don't even like.

Star Wars was always going to connect emotionally far more than any other franchise. It's a love that spans generations. People who first saw Star Wars back in '77 have past on that love to their children, some of whom have now passed the same love onto their children. Those kids will pass that same love when they are older and have families. There's probably no other film franchise that will ever mean so much to so many people. Would anyone really care if we get another Middle Earth movie? Would people be that upset if the MCU ceased to exist? If James Bond was never seen again would anyone even notice? Some obviously would, but for the majority probably not.

To be honest in terms of devotion and fanbase (not success), the only franchise that can even come close is Harry Potter.

I was actually thinking the same. If there's ever going to be a franchise that could even come close to rivalling Star Wars it's going to be Potter. I'm friends with a girl who is in her early 20's and Potter means the world to her. I think her generation will pass on their love of Potter in the same way people did for Star Wars.

I just read Pamela McClintock's latest article on THR. She says that TFA is on track to pass Avatar's domestic cume ($760M) by the end of New Year's weekend, and a final domestic gross north of $1 billion is certainly possible.

Credit the numerous people going back for repeat helpings too.

I was actually thinking the same. If there's ever going to be a franchise that could even come close to rivalling Star Wars it's going to be Potter. I'm friends with a girl who is in her early 20's and Potter means the world to her. I think her generation will pass on their love of Potter in the same way people did for Star Wars.

My top 3 are HP/MCU/SW and the order gets jumbled cause I'm kinda fickle that way....

All four franchises are experiencing a golden age of sorts so I'm a happy camper.

For me its real close between Marvel and Star Wars for #1 franchise. My 3rd is probably the Middle Earth movies. Hopefully DC ends up being one of my favorites as well.

I went into the theatre today in my parents' town to buy tickets for tomorrow - it was PACKED. Lines for every ticket pick up, self checkout and cashier. It's not even this packed in Toronto.

In terms of cultural impact I would argue Lord of the Rings has been the closest thing to a Star Wars in recent memory. It ushered in a new wave of genre films just as the OT did, the Harry Potter series included. Also, it's a powerhouse trilogy that happens to have a disappointing prequel trilogy. t:

2. DC/Vertigo (I love the mainline DC stuff, but it is books like Hellblazer, Preacher and Sandman that puts it high on my list)

That's true, I didn't know that. But I still think there are more corollaries with LOTR and Star Wars.

I love LotR. I grew up with it, so when the movies came around, I geeked the heck out. But HP captured the teen and young adult demo in a way few things do. It also appeals evenly to both sexes. Hermione is modern Leia.
