The Force Awakens Early Star Wars 7 Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 3

Lionsgate: Mockingjay 2 underperformed because Star Wars.

lol

($899.07 million after yesterday, so happy $900 million day everyone!)

Splitting the book into two movies allowed for them to make more money (total combined gross $618 million domestic / $789 foreign) than if they made one movie and stopped (doubtful one movie would have made $1.4 billion worldwide), so they can't exactly complain about it after they got greedy. But they can try.

If they can pull a successful re-release, Force Awakens might just get a chance at surpassing Titanic. This is a case where them releasing a new film once a year might limit how much TFA makes at the end of the day.

I smell a re release next year if Episode 8 is delayed into 2018 because of those strikes & what not. But a re release with The Entire Original Trilogy before Rogue One would also be good as well especially if it is known by that time Episode 8 will not make 2018. I'd imagine how quick a re release might happen would be based on what happens with Episode 8 first

ANH 40th anniversary re-release seems reasonable, then you can tack on TFA towards the end of the year.

But I doubt either happens.

Disney would be bonkers not to do a 40th anniversary ANH rerelease in May. They have no SW event there now and it's a major milestone date for the franchise. It wouldn't take much to just do a limited release for a week or so.

It's not their decision to make. Fox owns the distribution rights to A New Hope.

Well I figure they will work something out. It benefits both of them to do so.

Don't they own the distribution rights for all of the films excluding TFA & the others to be made by Disney?

I think it was just that huge opening ramped up expectations. But yeah, any attempt to paint $900 million as underperforming is ludicrous.

Deadline says that tomorrow will be $2 billion WW day here:

Also this tidbit, emphasis added:

So just maybe it still has a shot...

So the movie is at about 2 billion WW and sounds like it may have about 50m left USA. So maybe it will do 50m more OS has while for 100 million more WW to get to 2.1 billion and be about 80m short of titatic?

Currently at $1,994 million. So close.... Really hope it hits $2 billion by the end of the weekend.

It will hit 2 billion today. It is only like 2 million short of 2 billion after yesterday and it made 1.7 million yesterday. If it does around the same today that would put it only 300000 short of 2 billion and that doesn't include OS numbers today.

I believe as of right now, they own the distribution rights to Episodes I-III, V and VI through May 2020 until they revert back to Lucasfilm/Disney, but they will always own the rights to A New Hope.

First I've heard of that. Got a reputable source?

I was hoping it would pass Titanic's WWBO, but chances seem low, right?

It's been talked about a lot over on Blu-ray.com. Lucas paid for 1,2,3,5,6 with his own cash. Twentieth Century Fox paid for ANH. Because of this Fox owns ANH outright. Thats why Disney couldn't purchase it from Lucas. If Disney wants ANH they will have to buy it from Fox and Fox is highly unlikely to give up one of the most famous films in cinema history.

As for distribution, Fox holds the distribution rights for 1,2,3,5,6 until 2020. At which point the distribution rights will revert back to Lucasfilm and Disney. ANH however will remain with Fox because they actually own the film.

Due to some interstudio negotiating Fox and Disney have worked some deal out that allows Disney to release 1,2,3,5,6 digitally through Disney's Movies Anywhere service. ANH however is the only one of the 6 that wasn't released on Disney's Movies Anywhere service. It's digital version doesn't carry the DMA tag, and it's not available on https://www.disneymoviesanywhere.com/.

As long as Fox and Disney continue to be cooperative with each other none of this should be a problem, but if Fox wanted to cause a stink or if Disney ever pissed Fox off Fox could refuse to allow Disneythe right to distribute ANH with the other films.

I wonder if Disney can just perhaps either change the A New Hope title or take it out altogether for the Original Trilogy since thats how Star Wars was released :oldrazz:

Ah, okay, thanks for the insight. And I can see why they'd want to make sure they always maintain the rights for ANH, it'll always stand to bring them in a lot of cash. Isn't ANH alone selling for around $40+ bucks on Amazon?

Yeah, definitely a smart move on Fox's part.

0% chance. It's not going to make another 200M WW. It'll pass 2B for sure though which is all I've wanted. The 2B club will soon have 3 members! :D

Well then, I hope Fox releases it for the 40th next year! :) Even if it's just for a week in a limited amount of theaters, so all the new fans and us veterans can see it on the big screen again.

900m domestic, 2b WW.

$905.9 million on the home front, $2.008 billion everywhere. Suh-weet. If it's got another $45 million in it domestically it will flirt with $2.1 billion when it's all over.
