G.I. Joe: How would you have done it?

I would have opened the film with the following (shortened) speech from JFK on secret societies:

My GI Joe wouldn't be a propaganda film for a new world order internationalist strike force-- it would be about Americans stopping the formation of a new world order.

G.I. Joe.

Cobra Commander, leader of the Cobra criminal empire, and his soldiers, Baroness, Storm Shadow, Zartan and Firefly, enlist arms dealer Destro's help in a plan to conquer Earth. Using Destro's advanced weapons, Cobra Commander's soldiers attack several famous monuments, like the Empire State building, the Golden Gate brige, the Eifell Tower, the Piza tower and etc. to convince the world's rulers to surrender, unable their defensive systems and hand over their weapons arsenal to Cobra. O.N.U. can't let Cobra Commander and his men win, so, they enlist General Hawk's help to form a special team, using the best operatives of the world: Duke, Ripcord, Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, Roadblock, Breaker, Cover Girl and Shipwreck. The team, called G.I. Joe, sets to impeach Cobra from destroying the world, while learning how to work together and convince the world's leaders that the team is good idea. Flashbacks detailing the origins of the main character appear troughout the movie. Cobra Commander's secret weapon is an arsenal of advanced nanotechnological bombs that can destroy an entire city within minutes. The Joes must uncover their operations before Cobra Commander's surrending deadline of 72 hours ends, and he starts the attack. Can they funfill their mission?

In fifty years, they'll look back upon Transformers as a film about shapeshifters-- the way people look back on genre films of the Cold War era.

No, it's supposed to be a dark gritty R-rated war drama where the soldiers wear brightly colored costumes (except for one, who wears a World War 2 uniform). At least, that's what some people say.

and no fun....dark, gritty, serious socio-political commentary, you should be damn near frightened watching this movie and suspicious of your neighbors that they are deep cover COBRA operatives

It can be fun. But why couldn't it be true to the source material? Are you afraid of your xbox, Escalades or Coke machines? No. Was the darkKnight too adult for anyone to enjoy? or are you scared of every billionaire playboy you meet?. Bottom line is this movie isn't meant to be a social commentary, Nor is it meant to garner oscars and emmys. But it shouldnt jerk the customer by just hashing up a bunch of scrap metal and saying "oooooohhhhh LLOOOOOK how shiny! ". If you buy a PS3 and get it home, open it and its an Atari 2600 with a PS3 sticker on it wouldn't you be a little upset?

like I had said before, its a variety of source material....3 animated series, various comic books, DTV releases, all with different takes on GI Joe...the key is taking the recognizable elements and presenting them to everyone...

Im willing to give the movie a fair chance, unlike some who are going to sit in the theater, cross their arms, then go home and angrily blog or Twitter about it

I WAS all for giving it a chance until I found out that Ripcord was being portrayed by a black guy and a Wayans no less. That was only compounded by making Duke (or *****e as portrayed by tatum) and Rex (WHO THE HELL IS REX?!) BFFs and the Baroness is CC's sister when shes not even American to bgin with ( but being portrayed by a European with a British accent whos putting on a an American accent.). Or maybe I gave up on it when Destro gets his mask through the use of nanites. And none of what I mentioned above is in ANY of the G.I. Joe books or cartoons.

Imagine James Bond as a 20-year-old African American man out of the hood who is recruited by MI6 to work as a secret agent. Imagine Peter Parker as a filthy-rich spoiled brat who ends up as Spider-Man after being bitten by a radio-active spider in one his own laboratories.

Source material matters. The audience expect to see something that they saw when they were young, heard of, or caught a rerun of, translated on to the screen. No one expects or even hopes for a photostat of the comics or the show - its just that the basics have to be in play. Unfortunately, some of the core elements of the Joes have been changed by Sommers, and I don't know how it will bode with the fans, or even the general audience.

Remember one thing, its not always the fans who decide the fate of the franchise. Non-fans have equal rights to deem a movie a flop. It has happened. In a lot of cases because the characters could not be recognised by the audience, something which the new GI Joe movie sadly has the danger of succumbing to.

Why you had to go their man? And that be tough man.

Not every movie gonna win an oscar. And yes i would be mad if that happen with the ps3.

Because Ripcord's ethnicity is SO IMPORTANT! I could understand if it were Duke, or if Roadblock/Heavy Duty was cast with a white guy, but it's RIPCORD! In the realm of TOP tier GI Joe characters, aside from maybe a few uber die-hard fans, who really includes Ripcord in that group?

Now, how about articulating why these changes will make the film bad. Because this mentality of "they change elements x and elements y, so that makes it bad" without offering ANY substantial reasoning for how the changes will make the film bad, it's getting old.

Oh, don't get it twisted, this movie is gonna suck. It's just a question of how bad at this point.

Change does not = automatic suck, which is something more than a few fanboys could stand to learn. On everyone of these boards for every single franchise, it seems 90% of the people who bash a movie's first argument is "they changed [element x]." Being different from the source material does not have anything to do with quality, even if a lot of fanboys think it has EVERYTHING to do with it. Whether the differences are good, neutral, or bad is up to interpretation, but most people who bash movies here seem to insist that any deviation from the source is automatically bad.

I didn't say anything about change. I've been watching movies long enough to know a s**t sandwich when I sees it.

This is one of those movies you may have more fun watching during a matinee with people of all ages as opposed to a late showing with a bunch of fanboys. The kids will be much more enthralled and less prone to gripe.
