Game of Thrones - HBO part 2 - Part 3

The Borgias does show an interesting side of history that has been largely overlooked in popular media. The corruption, and decadence of the Catholic Church in those days was incredible. Not to say it's much better these days, but they don't rule Europe anymore.

I do find the lack of a powerful religious order in Westeros a bit strange, given all the other Medieval Europe tropes. But Stannis is working on that.

This is true, but he kind of deals with it. Apparently the Septon religion (Baelor, the Southron's Seven, etc.) was very powerful once and militaristic. Then the Targaryens spent generations getting them to come to heal about 200 years ago. It comes into play again in the fourth book when [blackout]Cersei lets them militarize in return of them expunging the crown's debt to the High Septon. It obviously explodes spectacularly in Cersei's face.[/blackout]

Hope that helps.

They're also tolerant of other religions. For example, Catelyn being from the South believed in the Seven while Ned being of the North believed in the Old Gods. However, both kept their respective religions and still raised a family. There's even a sept in Winterfell for Cat.

Okay, so I've been wary of wanting to actually read the books for this because I enjoy the tv series so much. I like being surprised every episode. Do you guys think it's worth it read through the series (because once I start it, I most likely won't be able to stop) or should I wait and keep with the tv series?

That's very strange. Religions generally by nature can not coexist. But hey, it is fantasy.

Now, are these religions real at all? Or is it like our world?

I.e. this is a world with dragons, giants and zombies, so maybe gods do actually exist in the universe.

At least read the book after its respective the season. They're great.

People decide whether religions can coexist.

Whether gods exist or not,
I don't know if you can say the gods actually exist. However, there is definitely something real about the faiths of the Old Gods and R'hollor. Bran's "wolf dreams" are him entering the mind of his wolf, Summer, which makes him a warg/skinchanger which is something from the Old Gods. With R'hollor, there is definitely something real there as well as you saw with Melisandre last week. I think of all the faiths, R'hollor's is on the blurry the line of magic and religion.

Monotheistic religions have trouble coexisting, but polytheistic religions coexist well most of the time. This is the case in the show as well. The polytheistic religions coexist and Mallisandres wants her monotheistic religion to be the one and only religion if Stannis wins the throne.

New Episodd tonight I'm excited to see how the end of the last episode will impact future episodes.

Did anyone notice in the opening sequence that Harrenhal isnt animated, it just lays there dead.

What a great episode. Best of the season.

Fantastic episode. Lots of progression.

It was ok. Wish that they would have lengthened the opening death a little longer to build up tension.

Good episode this week. Showed you a lot of people and their storylines without feeling rushed or pointless. However, I have no doubt Matt will disagree.

Lol, I await his assessment of tonight's episode.

Enjoyed the episode, but I think the beginning with Renly's death was a mistake. It should have been the end of last week. It just is kind of is too sudden to open the episode with, IMO.

Still an excellent episode. I was sad to see Renly go, eenjoyed the original scene between Margaery and Littlefinger, shooting the Hill of the First Man stuff and beyond in Iceland (Iceland, right?) was a great idea and looks stunning. They even did a great job of making Dany's stuff much more interesting with the marriage proposal and all than it was in ACOK (love Doreah vs. Irri. Hopefully Dany can comfort them...).

Lastly, for Arya and Jaqen H'ghar's sake:

Valar Morghulis.

Pretty good.

I have to say that Renly's death was just poorly done. Now, I don't know how they did it in the book, but it felt very sudden, and lacked any real impact.

Doesn't help that Stannis just walks in seconds later, and takes total control. They could have certainly handled it better.

This is the first time I've really seen the show handle something really badly. Otherwise though, it was a good episode.

Kinda how it is in the book, at least when I read it.

renly s death could have been done better but i loved the arya scenes tonight.tywin has no idea he has robb starks sister kinda funny!poor bran looks like he made a mistake sending those 200 men away.

Loved that moment with Tywin and Arya staring each other down. I also rather enjoyed Rickon's attempts to remind us that he exists

Part of the problem with Renly's death is that Stannis consolidated power way too quickly and far too easily. Really, the body wasn't even cold, and all of Renly's men just switched allegiances.

They're men of the Stormlands sworn to House Baratheon. They really had no other choice but to submit to Stannis and had no reason to fight him as they had planned if Renly had survived.

The Tyrells obviously high tailed out of there.
