Are theories based on events that happened in the show considered spoilers?

I never read the books (until after season 1), and I figured out there was something weird about Jon's past in the first few episodes.

I mean, Ned "honor before reason" Stark having a bastard? That should tell you something is up. And then him being all secretive about the mother to Robert? Then consider his age.
I dunno... I figured I'd put what I posted in spoiler/black out tags simply to be on the safe side *shrugs shoulders*

Ah, thanks. Was under the impression [BLACKOUT]Rhaegar was their father, or the 'Mad King'.[/BLACKOUT]
The name of [BLACKOUT]the Mad King was Aerys Targaryen. Rhaegar was a great person who was smart, honorable and compassionate, and a scholar, musician and warrior. He would likely have become a great king, which is part of the tragedy of his death and the Targaryen line.[/BLACKOUT]

For a while now ive been under the impression that Rob and Ned and various other houses intended to kick out the Mad King and install Rhaeghar long before the rebellion, but when Rhaeghar took Lyanna it upset the whole plan. Its never been confirmed but there are things in the books that seem to point to it. There is a lot about that rebellion that doesn't add up and I can't wait to finally find out the truth about it. I get the feeling tho that that bit of story will be cut.

Again, possible book spoilers/theory ahead... don't read if you don't want to know....

R+L=J is the theory that Jon isn't Ned Stark's bastard, but instead that Jon's "Stark" blood comes from Ned's sister, Lyanna and that Jon's father is actually Rhaegar Targaryen. That Ned's promise to Lyanna was that he take the baby and keep him safe (because if Robert were to get hint that Lyanna had a child by Rhaegar, I imagine Robert wouldn't have hesitated in killing the child). Some speculate that Jon isn't a bastard at all and that Rhaegar was actually married to Lyanna when Jon was born (I believe it wasn't terribly uncommon for Targaryen's to practice polygamy in addition to incest?)

you can read more on the theory here if you're interested: http://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Jon_Snow/Theories#Lyanna_Stark
That's the theory that makes the most sense to me, because it's the perfect Ned Stark lie. For example, we saw back in S1 when Jaime confronted him over Tyrion's imprisonment that Ned would compromise his own honor to protect the honor of someone he cared about, in that case covering for Cat by saying Tyrion was taken under his command.

Plus, [blackout]Ned Stark + random ****e[/blackout] just doesn't fit. Not his style, regardless of whether he was fighting a war or not.

In the show for example, when Ned and Jon are about to part on the Kingsroad and Jon asks about his mother, Ned starts to get broken up about it. Not the reaction you would expect if it was some random woman, it had to be someone Ned deeply cared for.

This is a great article about it on Tower of the Hand. You can change the scope on the site to prevent yourself from seeing spoilers. You'll need to change it to at least A Storm of Swords, but I don't think there's anything that will ruin it for TV viewers, the majority of the material is the backstory about the Tournament of Harrenhal that Meera and Jojen tell Bran (which will probably be cut from the show).

what are your guys thoughts on the theory about....

Tyrion Lannister possibly been a Targaryen and not a true Lannister?

Where's the evidence?

Pretty good response...makes me think a lot about it. I would strongly guess Martin is kinda pigeon holed into non-use with the westerling plot by her not even being in the show...and I think your thoughts make a lot of sense.

Thanks. Just trying to give a little counterpoint in this thread.

I think it's ******** and goes against the underlining theme that was set up with those two characters.

Utter bull****. The evidence of it is incredibly flimsy. What made the Tywin-Tyrion dynamic so great was that Tywin utterly despised him and never saw that Tyrion was his true heir because of his politically-savvy. He was the one most worthy and capable of carrying on the Lannister legacy over Cersei or Jaime.

I think the most convincing piece of evidence of Jon
being Rhaegar and Lyanna's son is Ned saying to Jon "I promise". And like someone above said he got choked up when Jon asked about his mom. And also, Lyanna's last words were "Promise me, Ned". Jon is Lyanna and Rhaegar's son. I'm 100% sure.

Er, there's a theory that Tyrion is a Targaryen? Link please.

Hmmm, not very convincing. I have to say though,

The R+I=J theory is very convincing, backed up by some quotes from the books that are as subtle as a slap in the face.

I think it's odd that a plot point as big as a bastard's hair color gets discarded for this theory.

Jon being blacked haired instead of golden/white like Dany and her brother? Well, isn't there a bit in the books where they refer to all the Stark children looking like Catelyn's side bar Jon and Arya who are said to share the same features. The latter being described as being very much like Lyanna. :cwink:

And Catelyn's annoyed that Jon looks more like Ned than any of his "trueborn" children.

Was that old, blind Maester from the finale a Targaryen?

Yeah, man. He told Jon, remember?

He's the great uncle of the Mad King.

I thought so, thanks. Would that mean he had a greater claim to the Throne than Robert (since Dany and Viserys were off Westeros by that time)?

He gave up his right to the Throne. He was older than his brother, Aegon, but refused it and joined the Night's Watch so he couldn't be the Grand Maester of the King's council either.

That oul boy is a Targaryen? That went over my head...as a lot of things do in this show. :o

Jon has a talk with him about wanting to go join Robb. Aemon wished he could go help his family.
