Gotham Gotham Season 1, Episode 1 "Pilot" General Discussion

Nobody noticed the stand up comic rehearsing for Fish Mooney in the scene where Oswald was massaging her feet and then called Oswald out for betraying her? Nobody??!! Hello? Some may think it's far fetched but one of the joker's "rumored" back stories was that he was a stand up comic.

That popped into my head when I saw it too. I'm just not sure how old the Joker is suppose to be compared to Bruce.

I'm more a Marvel guy, but I enjoyed the pilot. It looks like an interesting take and I look forward to seeing how they progress.

Good. Has room to improve and I think it will. Some good actors and characters in there.

Liked the actor that plays Bruce.

This has got good potential.

Really like the idea that they give a few potential jokers. Just hope they don't ever do a reveal.

I have a feeling I'm going to be the only person who comments on the episode who thought it was flawless, but I'm okay with that.

I have to echo the sentiments that it's like a live-action version of Batman TAS, but I was also reminded very much of the SyFy series Caprica and the vastly underappreciated GCI film Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, and I can already say with confidence that this show is going to be my new Monday night obsession for the foreseeable future.

The entire main cast was perfect, and I can't wait to see what else happens next with each and every one of them.

Ben McKenzie makes the perfect Gordon, and honestly gives Gary Oldman a run for his money; he's exactly the kind of 'white knight' a place like Gotham needs, but he's also smart enough to know that he's going to have to play the game in order to eventually upend it, and his journey is going to be incredibly fun to watch as he tries to navigate the line between playing the game and being consumed by it.

Harvey Bullock is likeable, but compromised just enough to make him convincing as the yang to Gordon's yin, and it'll be interesting to see what happens next and how quicklythings progress to a point where he and Gordon are butting heads completely.

It's going to be real hard for anybody to top the brilliance that is Burgess Meredith's Penguin, but Robin Lord Taylor is off to a great start in making the attempt to do so, and I cannot wait to see how much more dangerous he becomes. As the old adage goes, "it's always the quiet ones you've got to watch out for", and, if tonight's episode and the preview for next week's episode are any indication, Oswald is definitely somebody you need to watch out for.

You can't really have a good superhero series without a character who's so deliciously bad and over-the-top, and without a Joker on the scene yet, Fish Mooney fits that bill perfectly. Jada Pinkett Smith was clearly having fun with the role, and I can't wait to see what else she does in terms of screwing with people, particularly once the war that Oswald mentions breaks out (because you know that it will eventually).

We didn't really see enough of the rest of the series' main characters (Captain Essen, Barbara, Bruce, Alfred, and Selina) to get a true sense of how they'll fit into the bigger narrative arc for the series, but I did like the way that Selina seemed to be following Bruce after playing 'silent witness' to the murder of his parents, and can't wait for the two of them to finally meet face-to-face. I also can't wait to see what, if anything, else happens with Ivy, Nygma, Falcone, and the other major recurring characters they introduced. I'm also really intrigued to find out what Montoya was referencing when she asked Barbara if Gordon knew her the way she (Montoya) knew her.

Some pilots start off kind of shaky, but this wasn't one of them, so kudos to Heller and Co. for that.

how long until Montoya and Gordon become allies instead of just not trusting one another
I like that they are not allies right away, and they are setting them up as antagonistic.
She's got no reason to trust Gordon yet as he just showed up. And Gordon doesn't know if she's part of the problem or the solution.

The added twist between her and Barbara Kean puts a whole new spin on it.
So these two should keep each-other on their toes for a while before they realize they have allies in each-other.

I think they will trust each other at some point.......I bet her partner is dirty/corrupt........maybe Kean and her was lover or something before

It was solid, with some slightly cringey dialogue but that will improve with time. The acting was fine and it was nice to see all these future villains and heroes, though I hope 3/4 appearing each episode isn't the norm.

Was one of the muggers taken in by Bullock and Gordon Victor Zsasz?

my guess is Fish and Oswald Cobblepot will be two focused criminal/villain for the season with the rest showing up as needed....

The producers said they'll be teasing the Joker all season and hinting at his various 'origin' stories here and there throughout the series.

They want to keep the audience guessing at who'll turn out being the Joker.
I love this.

The Joker is the one villain who I DON'T really want to see before Batman shows up. Riddler, Penguin, Ivy, etc, I can buy them existing before Batman since their schtick isn't exclusively tied to him. Joker, one the other hand, he defines himself by his "game" with Batman. So him being around without Batman just doesn't sit right with me.

Agree with this. But a few hints here and there of his possible presence I wont mind. As long as they don't over do it.

I posted my review in the other thread, but I guess it belongs here....

Penguin stole the show.He could be the hook that keeps me interested.

The cast was generally good all around.Couldn't dig Bullock though. He couldn't top the B:TAS version, and he didn't even come close. He's also corrupt, apparently. The B:TAS version was "unpleasant" but hardly corrupt.

I hated Selina witnessing the murder. No need to get cute. The universe doesn't need to be THAT small.

Alfred-meh.Not the version I prefer.But it's early yet.He may grow on me.

Nigma working for the police.

The "Barbara's explosive secret" potboiler is gonna get old fast,I'm predicting.

Didn't like the Waynes killed "for no reason".

So,kinda a mixed bag.I liked the first half a lot, they started to lose me about halfway through, but I'll give it a chance.

I am much happier with this episode than I expected to be. Had some problems, but as far as pilots go, I thought it was one of the better ones I've seen.

Decent start. There were some hammy acting but I'm intrigued enough to give it a chance.

Almost all the bad acting wasn't by the leads/regulars though

Very promising start imo, though I don't need to see selina kyle, the next episode im not overly excited about

You know what I'm surprised we didn't see? A bat. It's a simple nod and could have easily been used in the opening scene. Although I hope they save the bats and end the season with young Bruce walking into the cave to conquer his greatest fear.

Pretty nice pilot episode. Not bad at all.
Felt like too many HUGE batman villains shoehorned into the pilot episode though. But maybe thats just me.

I say save the bats at the end of the season as well. Though in the last episode of season 1, have Bruce to have a nightmare about bats. I wouldn't want to see the batcave until the end of the series, unless they show Bruce falling into it.

I could do without baby catwoman and poison ivy but otherwise all the other villains felt like they belonged

While I suppose they can give the man who becomes The Joker an origin they cant have the Joker without Batman. Well, they can but its gonna be lacking probably. Joker is a result of Batman. Cause and effect. Action and reaction. Yin and yang. Thats what Batman and Joker are. You cant have one without the other imo.

Since Batman isnt in this show Joker should never show up.

The only scene that flat-out had me rolling my eyes was the one between Barbara and Renee.

Dear Lord, yes.
That, Oswald's speech at the pier, Barbara's "keep swimming" dialogue, Gordon to Bruce after the murder.
Half the time Mooney opened her mouth.
Sounds like I hated it but I thought it was aight.
The fact that it was, for the most part, visually impressive made those flaws stick out more to me.
I'm not writing this off by any means though.

I enjoyed the pilot quite a bit. Donal Logue stole the show as Harvey Bullock, and Robin Lord Taylor's Cobblepot is such a sneaky twitchy little weasel. Loved him. Benjamin McKenzie struck the right chords as Jim Gordon for me. Gordon and Bullock's dynamic is what will carry Gotham. Seeing Montoya and Allen in live action is a treat as well.

I wasn't feeling Sean Pertwee as Alfred in the episode. Hopefully he grows on me.

Regarding Bullock, he was corrupt early on in the books, but became more of an honest cop under Gordon because he respected him. He's always still a dick though.

Pilot was meh. Nothing all that good about it. I liked what they're doing with the Penguin and that's pretty much it so far.
