HBO's True Detective - Part 2

Collin and Rachel here and there are the only highlights.

That whole orgy hotel scene was awesome, yet they still manage to fail with who ever picked out the score for it.

So, one shoutout and that above seen have been the only things I sort of like this year that doesn't involve Ray doing coke and beating up people.

What the hell is with those Mexicans and Frank? I about fall asleep everytime they were on screen and I have no clue what is going on there...

If McAdam's character was in fact raped by her Dad/s hippy friend... **** this show.

The score for the last 5-10 minutes was the only good thing about the episode. I mean, yeah, it didn't fit, but. :o

........

this season has been complete **** other than the shootout.

the final two episodes better own ass or Vince Vaughn gets flayed.

I thought the score was great. It added to whole trippy atmosphere of Bezzerides' trip. Didn't expect to get backstory on Ani during that thing though and seems kinda cliche for us to see those in a drug-induced trip, but it looked somewhat interesting visually at least.

Man, if Paul's arc just ends with him coming to accept his homosexuality and either leaving behind his pregnant girlfriend or whatever, then I'm gonna be kinda meh over it because I feel like his personal problems are so disjointed and irrelevent until the writers need it to be. He's so capable otherwise and doesn't get the same level of focus compared to Velcoro or Semyon so it's just kinda blah. I guess that can be said of all the characters in the show but I just don't gel with his personal struggles as much as I do Ray's personal struggles.

The episode was solid though. The Mexicans killing off that girl was just kinda WTF though. Like that was such a lowball move towards Frank and in general that it wasn't even shocking. Like, "Things are finally moving with Frank, he'll finally be more integrated to the - oh wait, the Mexicans just killed her....okay then."

At this point I feel comfortable in saying that they almost certainly won't. And, at the risk of being accused of wanting this season to just be last season all over again.... well, look at last season. Look at where we were at this point. We had worked our way through two time periods, we had seen our two leads grow closer and then pull completely apart, we saw them think they had gotten to the bottom of this case before Rust had the rug pulled out from under him, we saw Marty's marriage crumble beyond repair and by the time we caught up with both in the third time period they were completely alone. Beyond that, I thought we actually had good development on the case itself. Altogether, we had the stage set for what ended up being a fantastic final two episodes.

With this season, if the last two actually end up being good, it won't change the fact that we've gotten f*** all up until this point.

So should I even bother with this episode or is it just more thumb twiddling?

That was an accurate depiction of what happens when you watch Friends.

He's teeter-tottered between being decent and fumbling around with some of the terrible dialogue Pizzolato's been giving him.

He's probably the best of the four leads, but I don't really know how much of a compliment that is this season.

Curious why the people who think it sucks are still watching haha. Dumb. If I hate something or think it sucks, I'm not going to continue to watch and invest my time in it. Common sense to drop it and move on to something else. But I guess some continue to watch even if they hate it just so they can come on here to remind everyone how much they hate it.

Well, it's a short engagement. If this was a 22-episode season kind of show and it was churning this mess out, I would've been out a while ago. As it is, once I was in deep enough to figure out that I really wasn't liking what I was seeing, I was already a significant portion of the way through the season. I figure I'll at least see it through.

I watch because I keep hoping that they'll turn it around.

Is it safe to say that for the course of the season, majority of Vince Vaughn's scenes have been going to different people and asking for something, really that's all he's been doing the whole time.

Yeah, Vaughn has just been given barebone material thus far. He's even stopped monologuing so we don't even get some kinda internal conflict anymore with his infertility/trying to stay wealthy. He's literally there to push Velcoro in certain directions, and then occasionally have other gangsters thwart his advances, so he ends up with nothing at the end of each episode. Skipping over the loss of his super nice in the time skip probably wasn't the best idea either and neither was copping out on him actually manipulating Velcoro.

I actually think Vaughn has been pretty good this season. Some of the lines are typical Pizzolatto in that if you're not McConaghuey you won't be able to say it. But the material he's gotten is really bland.

this show shoulda done what The Tunnel did and end itself with one season,

One thing that can't be denied however is that Colin has been the MVP in Season 2.

For sure.

But Im not surpised. He was the only one I knew wouldn't be a problem acting wise. The only one I was worried about was Vaughn really.

What the hell is with those Mexicans and Frank? I about fall asleep everytime they were on screen and I have no clue what is going on there...
.

Holy s*** I completely agree.

I tried to pay attention but eventually I just started going on my phone after a while.

Very good points that I agree with.

I didn't need this to be like season 1. I just wanted it to be good...which I don't feel this is.

In all fairness, Broseph, you seem to like/love just about...everything. I don't think I've ever seen you complain about anything, criticize, or "hate" on something. The only things I've ever seen you complain about are people who complain about things you like.

I get the sense that you don't know what it's like to be frustrated/disappointed by a TV show but also feel obligated to see it through to its end so that you can judge a season/series in its entirety, hope that it picks up, see how it ends, find out which plot points "pay off", see how the final episodes affect the earlier episodes, etc.

So, I haven't seen any of this season yet but I've been keeping an ear out to the buzz (on SHH and elsewhere) and this season is really getting trashed. I was planning to binge watch the season all at once once its done. Do you think it'll watch better in binge format rather than week-to-week?

There's a lot of things that I dislike in things that I enjoy. You can go over to the Gotham forums and see haha. I've already said in this season the stuff I don't really care for is Vaughns character. But I love Colin and Rachael's stuff in this. It's true yes I generally like/love most things. Just my taste. I know what I like and what I don't.

When it comes to things I really dislike or hate, I just don't discuss as much. If it's a few things here and there sure. But say it's like an entire film/TV series/comic etc I'd rather not discuss it. Like say I see a thread in the TV section here for a show I hate. I don't go into that thread to discuss. I'd rather spend my time discussing things I enjoy over things I 100% didn't enjoy. I'm sorry if that's such a bad thing haha :)

But if people who are watching don't like what they see, and are willing to have reasonable discussions about it, I don't see that as a bad thing at all.

Binge.

Oh and shape on the whole second point of your post, believe me I know what it's like to be frustrated/disappointed by a show but feel obligated to watch. One word, Dexter. I'm just saying sometimes it seems like there isn't one positive thing people can say at all and it's just entirely negative at which point why watch something you dislike so much? It's just all different tastes I guess.

It seems to bother you or some it seems that I'm a positive person who would rather focus or spend more time discussing the enjoyable things over the things we hated. I could sit and spend hours discussing the ending of Dexter. But why? Why work myself up and talk about something that I didn't enjoy one bit at all? Rather be happy and discuss enjoyable ****. :)

It doesn't bother me and I don't think it's such a bad thing. I envy you, in a way. I wish I could see the world through rose-colored goggles.
